Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunities
Tips for Submitting a Good Application
1.
Make yourself standout! Highlight talents, experiences, interests and aspirations.
The selection process is competitive.
2.
Write a positive and good interest statement. Address the issues requested.
Be original. Provide information that allows application reviewers to understand
why this opportunity is important to you.
3.
Follow all directions. Contact the program office if you have questions.
*Please note that some programs refer to “underrepresented students” which may
or may not include first generation college students; ethnic/cultural/racial
minorities; women; students with disabilities; students from locations/schools with
limited research opportunities; and students from disadvantaged socio-economic
backgrounds. Please refer to specific program eligibility requirements for details.
4.
Proof read and spell check several times. Have someone else proof read the
application.
5.
Ask your references if they will write a strong & positive letter of
recommendation. If they cannot do so ask someone else.
6.
Provide your references with a resume, copy of the program flyer, information on
why you are interested in this opportunity, the date the reference letter is due (to
you or to the program office), and a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Follow up
with your references to make sure they have sent the reference letter.
7.
Submit your application by the application deadline date.
8.
Contact the program office to make sure they have received your complete
application.
