Art Notes – 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Gospel of St. Mark is featured in the current B cycle
of readings for this liturgical year. The art work in the
back of the Centrum is a detail of St. Mark taken from the
mosaics which cover the interior of St. Mark’s Basilica in
Venice, Italy. The Patriarchal Cathedral Basilica of Saint
Mark was constructed during the 11th and 12th centuries.
With its opulent design, gold ground mosaics, and its
status as a symbol of Venetian wealth and power, the
building has been known by the nickname Chiesa d’Oro
(Church of Gold).
