TRC
OVERVIEW
TRC stands for text reading comprehension, it is
a tool used to assess your child’s reading level.
This assessment is done individually with each
student using leveled books. This reading level
can be used to determine appropriate books
to read both at school and at home.
 Students may test at their frustrational level,
instructional level (student is being
challenged), or independent level (still
challenging, used for seat work & home
reading).


Atlas books cover all levels from A-Z
 Oral comprehension questions might ask the
students to explain how the character changes
from the beginning to the end of the story or to
locate information on a specific page
 Written comprehension questions are with
levels F-Z


READING BEHAVIORS (CCSS FOR
ELA):
Decode words with long and short vowels, common vowel teams,
regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels, common prefixes
and suffixes, inconsistent but common spelling-sound
correspondences, and grade-appropriate irregular spellings within text
Use context to confirm word reading and understanding
Read grade-level text accurately, at an appropriate rate, and with
expression
Ask and answer questions about a text’s key details, central message,
main topic, characters, and/or sequence of events or concepts
Recount stories and identify the central message or main topic of a
text and its paragraphs

Describe connections between events, concepts, or steps

Describe characters and how they respond to events

Describe the overall structure of a story

Acknowledge different points of view of characters

Use illustrations to understand a text’s characters, setting, and plot

MPG
OVERVIEW
MPG stands for MAP for Primary Grades
 Series of tests in reading and math to assess
your child’s knowledge
 The students use headphones and the test is
read to them
 MPG helps teachers to identify your child’s
strengths in reading and math as well as
identify areas your child needs work on
 Teachers use this information when assigning
students to cooperative learning groups


Think of MPG as a growth chart that measures your
child’s growth in reading and math from year to
year
The student are scored on how many questions are
answered correctly and on the level of difficulty of
each question
Students are assessed in 4 different goals for
reading and math each
Reading goals: foundational skills, literature and
informational text, vocabulary use and functions,
language and writing
Math goals: algebraic thinking, number and
operations, measurement and data, geometry

MAP
MAP stands for Measures of Academic Progress
 MAP is just like the MPG except:

MAP is given from 2nd-5th grades so the questions
the students may see will be at a higher difficulty
level
 MAP is not read to the students
 Students need to have a knowledge of working a
mouse to click and drag items and also to scroll
through text


TIPS
Practice good study habits at home during
homework time
 Review test taking skills
 Read to and with your child daily
 Make sure your child gets a good nights sleep
the night before test day
 Keep the lines of communication open with
your child’s teacher about his/her progress and
what you can do at home to help your child

