2015 isn't about cutting back on all inputs, its about finding those that best optimize your
yield potential. #agronomy
2015 outlook
• Looking at a very different financial outlook for farming.
• Insurance will not be as lucrative.
• It will be important to raise the most bushels as efficiently as possible.

Fungicide
Trials
Seed Treatment
Bil Schrader
Seed Treatment
• Fungicide/Insecticide with Exalibre SA was 1.6 bu/A better than
Fungicide/Insecticide alone in 2013.
• Fungicide/Insecticide with Exalibre SA was 1.5 bu/A better than
Fungicide/Insecticide alone in 2014.
• Fungicide/Insecticide alone was 3.3 bu/A better than untreated beans in
2014.
• Exalibre SA is our preferred product because of its triple strained inoculant
blend along with trichoderma bio-fungicide which provides season long
protection of roots from diseases like SDS.
Scrutiny of Neonicinitoids
• EPA released in October review of neonics
• Findings stated little financial benefit to farmers
• Increased risk to bee health
• Open comment period until December 22nd
• http://www2.epa.gov/pollinator-protection/benefits-neonicotinoid-seedtreatments-soybean-production
• www.agvoice4choice.com
• Stewardship Importance
• Minimize talc dust-off essential
• Polymer coatings
• Canada already has restricted use and considering ban
Fluency Agent from Bayer
•
•
•
•
•
•
Wax-based seed lubricant talc substitute for air assist planters
Reduces the amount overall dust-off by 90%
Low use rate 1/8 of a cup/bag-important to be on rate
4.4 lb pail with scoop treats 250 bags of seed
Very good feedback from growers especially on larger air planters
Cost estimated at of about $.30/bag of seed corn or beans
Cover Crops

• Injection of additives, stabilizers and biologicals possible
• Chemical injection possible
Value-added PN Programs
Nitrogen Stabilizers
• Instinct II
• Nitrapyrin inhibits the nitrosomonas bacteria in the soil
• Formulated for UAN solutions as well as manure
• Keeps nitrogen available in the root zone
• Supports Environmentally Beneficial Farming Practices
• 6 bu/A advantage for state of Iowa over the last 5 years
Nitrogen Stabilizers
• Nutrisphere
• Ties up nickel required by Urease
• Ties up copper & iron required by nitrosomonas & nitrobacter bacteria
• Dual mode action prevents nitrogen loss
• Formulated for UAN & Urea
• Rate specific makes it cost effective
Nitrogen Stabilizers
• Agrotain Plus
• Dual formulation
• NBPT inhibits urease
• DCD for below ground protection
for up to 14 days
• Formulated to mix into UAN
• Formulated for UAN as well as Urea
• Agrotain Ultra
• NBPT inhibits urease
• Prevents loss from volitization
Plant Growth Promotors
• Stimulate
• Contains Gibberellin, Aukin, Cytokinin
• Promotes germination, cell elongation, and cell division
• Apply using starter fertilizer or as a seed treatment
• Promotes root growth for increased nutrient uptake
• Strong yield results from demo plots & certain soil types from FTF trials
• Bio-Forge
• Antioxidant, controls hormone interactions & increases drought tolerance
• Applied in-furrow or as a foilar
• Should be used to help mitigate stress for plants
Biologicals/Microbials
• Accomplish LM
• Bio-Chemical
• Combination of enzymes, organic acids, and chelators to create nutrient availibility
• For use in starter, UAN solutions, manure
• Has reputation as solid performer at making nutrients more available
• Data has shown 4-6 bu/A increase on corn
• Generate
• Uses cobalt to jump start microbial activity
• Can be applied in-furrow or as a foliar application
• It should be used
• Small plot data concludes 5 bu/A increase in corn, 3.75 bu/A increase in soybeans
New products to consider 2015!
• Limus - BASF
• Sernade Soil - Bayer
• Similar to Agrotain Ultra
• Biological Fungicide
• Two AI’s – NBPT & NPPT
• Applied with starter or water
• Beneficial soil bacterium acts as a
• Prevents loss to volatilization
protective barrier that grows with
• BASF Financing? Availability?
the roots
• Preserve-N
• Directly attacks diseases in the soil
• Liquid DCD (30% AI)
• Bayer rebate program
• 1gal/ton
• Below ground protection only (Instinct II)
How to Build a Season-long Rec
• Look at Soil tests
• Look to Agro-Culture Liquid products
 Low Salt
 High nutrient efficiency
• Plants need N,P,K Sulfur and micros
• Plants need available nutrients
• Plant needs are met by providing a balanced solution
• Spoon feeding with the right nutrients at the right timing
Side dress Options
•
•
•
•
•
Started with x starter….now what?
Side dress! Back to the spoon feeding approach!!
Has added a solid ROI back to our grower base
This fits right in with the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy
We as Agronomist’s/CCA’s need to make better nutrient recommendations
and moving nitrogen out to when the plant needs it is a great 1st step!
