Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Just One Can Food Drive:
Today's Gospel continues our reading from Mark and
describes what some believe was likely to have been a typical day
in Jesus' ministry. Jesus and the disciples that chose to follow him
in last week's Gospel arrive at Capernaum, a small village on the
Sea of Galilee. Jesus teaches in the synagogue on the Sabbath.
Mark reports that the people respond to Jesus' teaching with
astonishment, noting Jesus' authority and contrasting it with the
scribes'. Early in Mark's Gospel we already find evidence of the
tension that will manifest itself fully in Jerusalem.
After Jesus' preaching, an even more astonishing thing
happens. A man possessed with an unclean spirit calls out to
Jesus. Jesus orders the spirit to be quiet and drives the unclean
spirit out of the man. Jesus' ability to heal those possessed by
demons is an indication of his power over evil.
The crowds see in Jesus' cure of the possessed man further
affirmation of his authority. Jesus' power to heal gives greater
credence to his teaching. Jesus impresses the crowds through his
words, which are manifested with power in his deeds. Mark's
Gospel tells us that because of the authority with which he healed,
Jesus' fame spread throughout all of Galilee.
Please Pray for
Saint Blaise Blessing of Throats
Saint Blaise is the patron saint of wild animals because of
his care for them and of those with throat maladies. This year
feast of St. Blaise is on Tuesday, February 3rd but we will have a
blessing of the throats after the 4:00 p.m., 9:00 a.m. and 11:00
a.m. Masses next Saturday and Sunday, February 7 and 8.
Catholic Ministries Appeal Update
To the 262 families who have already
generously responded to the Catholic Ministries
Appeal, thank you! As of January 20, the
amount of $33,353 was pledged in which
represents 80.02 % of our quota amount of
$41,680.
Please remember, the CMA is our fair
share of the budget for ministries that serve
people throughout our diocese. Remember too,
any shortfall comes out of our parish budget, so
your generosity is important! Especially if you
haven t participated in the past, PLEASE
prayerfully reconsider making a pledge this
year.
The following parishioners made their
contributions to CMA during the week ending
on January 20: St. Stanislaus Church, Ms.
Patricia A. Curry, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas

bring in one can, box or bag of food. Each week we will highlight
a high needs item but ALL foods will be accepted and appreciated
by those in need.

City East Transportation Ministry
City East Transportation Ministry has just completed 11
years of service to the parishes of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini,
Peace of Christ, and St. Stanislaus Church. Fr. Robert Werth is
the primary sponsor for this ministry. This volunteer ministry
provides free transportation to registered members of those organizations for medical, dental, shopping, church and other purposes considered to be necessary for our clients. Drivers use their
own vehicles and cover their own costs. Clients should have no
other means of transportation for these purposes. Requests for
transportation may be made by calling 266-6570.
Altar Flowers and Vigil Lights
There are many ways to remember our dear departed. We
have Mass in their honor and we pray. Another way is to make a
donation for the altar flowers in their memory to commemorate
their anniversary, some special happening in their lives or just in
remembrance or monthly vigil lights. At the same time we add a
special beauty to the Eucharist. Please contact the Parish office
(467-3068) if you would like to make a donation of altar flowers
or monthly vigil lights.
