King Andreas & Queen Candy
Congratulations to Century City’s Man and
Woman of the Year, Candy McKnight and
Andy Vogel, on being voted LAC 2002-03
Man & Woman of the Year. Both will
represent LA Council at the upcoming Far
West Ski Association (FWSA) Convention to
be held in Rancho Mirage on May 31 - June
1, 2003. We know they will do us proud.
Candy is currently President of Century City
and has served on the board in just about
every position since 1985. She jumped in
with both feet when she first volunteered to
run the summer water ski trips. Andy is
currently the LAC Representative for
Century City and has helped with the
printing of the LA Council Directory. He
too has held many offices in Century City as
well as being the Editor for many award
Andy Vogel and Candy McKnight, Century City Ski Club
winning Westwood newsletters.

Message from the President
Knott’s Knuggets
by Ed Knott, LAC President
Can’t you just feel it?
There’s a definite change in
the air to remind those of
us living in a “no season”
zone that winter is around
the corner.
To celebrate the arrival of
snow, the council once
again hosted our
annual Snow Gala on
November 2, 2003 at
the beautiful Marina
City Club. There was
plenty of wining and
dining, fabulous door
and raffle prizes and a
chance to cheer for
your favorite Man and
Woman of the Year
candidates.
This year Ski Dazzle comes
to the convention center
November 21st through 24th,
2002. In addition to the
latest ski/board technology
on display, the ski swap and
ski area operators to talk to,
the show will provide a
forum for attracting new
members to your clubs. The
council will staff a booth to
direct people to information
about clubs in their areas.
Our first taste of “official”
skiing occurs December 13th
through 22nd, 2002 for the
L.A. Council’s Ski, Board
and Race Week. The two
Johns— Funtsch and
Catozzi— will put on
another terrific race camp
with five days of intense
instruction followed by five
nights of fun and games.
so many Denverites call
Winter Park their favorite
mountain. Our V.P. Travel,
Bonnie West, will be
leading a whole bunch of us
to try to bring Mary Jane to
her knees. Why not join us?
This year Debbi Kor, V.P.
Development, Far West Ski
Association, is working hard
to provide benefits to club
members in the form of
equipment and clothing
discounts, equipment
shipping, etc. As the
benefits become available,
I’ll be notifying the club
presidents on the
particulars.
See you on the hill! ●
From February 1st through
8th, 2003, we’ll find out why
Do You Love To Ski?
Here’s a challenge that will change your life . . .
AND enhance a person’s life forever!
• The Unrecables, a member club of LAC & Disabled Sports
America, are recruiting volunteer instructors for their adaptive ski
program at Mammoth.
• No experience is required— they provide the training!
• For each weekend you volunteer and instruct, you get a free ski day
at Mammoth.

Membership
Matters
by Iris Williams, VP Membership
Hello Everyone. I want to thank all the Member
clubs who have sent their dues and club
information to LAC before October 2002.
Catherine Ohl always does an excellent job on
our Annual Directory and without your
participation the booklet would be worthless.
For those clubs who still have not sent in their
information and/or dues, please do so asap.
LAC still needs your updated information for
continued communication throughout the year.
Our goal is to create a dynamic resource for
all the member clubs while providing a
stimulating atmosphere for skiers whether
novice or expert. Bilateral communication is
a must to obtain this level of success. And
Our Success is your Success.
Based on information provided, your most
recent newsletter and your web site, we have
complied a list of LAC clubs trips. They
have been classified into three groups—
Mammoth, other trips by destination, other
trips by date.
Trip information appears in the Directory
and on the LAC web site
(www.lacouncil.org). Check it out and send
any corrections to me. ●
The Future of Ski Clubs
Yesterday—
Most ski clubs were formed 20
to 35 years ago. At that time,
the average age of members was
in the mid-30s. The original
impulse for club creation was
one person (or a few people)
who said "Let’s go skiing." This
skiing activity emerged from
within some other social
context— church, business,
sport, bar, or other social group
On trips, skiing was the main
attraction. Clubs members,
being relatively young and less
affluent, were more roughand-ready and willing to
accept basic travel
arrangements. At the time, the
travel environment was vastly
different and groups were the
only way to get a good deal.
Today—
Today, the average age of club
members is in the 50s. The
typical current club membership
has decreased sharply to 25% to
35% of the their peak
membership. Clubs today have
often assumed a broader social
role providing many other
activities for members. Members
are skiing less and are seeking
new destinations, new
attractions, and more comfort in
their travel arrangements. More
are traveling overseas and adding
non-ski dimensions to their trips.
Today, air travel is nonregulated and very
competitive. Being a member
of a group is not necessary to
get the best deals. In this
environment, successful clubs
need to add value beyond
mere trip price, and to provide
other benefits that their
members seek.
Individual clubs have very
different personalities, and
excerpted from NSCF, 07/22/02
there is no single program that
applies to every club. Clubs
recognize the need to attract
more members. Most want to
grow, but not necessarily back
to their peak numbers. Clubs
also recognize that their
membership is aging and want
to attract younger members.
Few clubs have any vision for
their future, or any concrete
plans, either strategic or
tactical, beyond the travel
and activity program for the
current (and, possibly, the
following) year. The few clubs
that seem to be countering the
trends are those that have
strong family and youth
programs. Notable among
these are some clubs belonging
to the NBS (National
Brotherhood of Skiers).

Snow Gala Recap
Oh What A Party!
by Jacquie Nemor, VP Programs
Snow Gala—
Now, I call that a successful
party when the dance floor
is still rocking and rolling
past 11:00 p.m.! Thank you
to all for attending and
making the Marina City
Club the most happening
and happiest place to
be on November 2,
2002.
The Mardi Gras theme
made us ready to party
all night long, the food
was outstandingly
delicious, and the
laughter from hearing
the Men and Women
of the Year contestants’
stories of “What is your
most funniest experience
skiing” left us in stitches!

Congratulations to Century
City’s Man and Woman of
the Year, Candy McKnight
and Andy Vogel. There
certainly is something going
on when one club is voted
both the Man and the
Woman of the Year since
this is the forth year in a
row for this to happen. Last
year it was Grindelwald
with Fay Mumbauer and
Norbert Knapp, and the
year before it was the

This proves that the
members of each club are
just exceptional! What club

walks away as the club with
the most exceptional

Running for a Good Cause
Having raised several thousand
dollars for the Stroke Association,
two “representatives” of LA
Council flew to Kona, Hawaii the
end of June for the Kona 5K and
Marathon: Linda Riback of The
Unrecables for the 5K and yours
truly (Judith Miller) for the
Marathon. Unfortunately, Linda
had an extremely sore toe, so
wasn’t able to do her race. But she
was there to cheer us on and
welcome us at the finish.
The Marathon had its moments.
The course goes along a main
highway lined on each side with
fields of black lava and vehicles
whizzing by. The temperatures
probably went up into the 90s
(fortunately the humidity was
lower than LA), but the thin
cloud cover we had seen the two
previous days faded away and
there was nowhere to hide from
the sun. But I finished.
Our stay in Hawaii was very
pleasant. The Waikoa Hilton
resort is truly deluxe (they even
make you pay for morning coffee
in the room and charge a flat
$5.21 to deliver one small
suitcase!). We had a super pasta
party and even better “victory
party” with hula girls and stud
muffins doing fire dances and in a
gale-force wind.
The return home was extra nice
because we didn’t have to submit
to the body-search we had on the
way in and our flight brought us
directly to LAX.
Thanks everyone for your support.
You made a difference. ●

C More on The Future of Ski Clubs from page 3
Tomorrow—
Skiing (using the word generically
to apply to all on-snow activity) is
not going away. Financial
investment in infrastructure and
real estate is high. Ski resorts are
well managed, increasingly
successful, and have a good
understanding of their markets.
On the other hand, ski clubs are in
serious risk of aging into oblivion,
becoming obsolete or irrelevant.
There are only a few snowboard
clubs but the issue if not one of
skier versus snowboarder but
simply of age differences.
It sometimes seems that clubs, and
the officers running them, have an
agenda of their own, beyond
serving their members. Ski clubs
should be operated like a small
business— members are the
customers and management needs
to be entrepreneurial, not
bureaucratic.
Clubs should focus on marketing
from the inside out, better serving
their existing members and similar
people these members can attract.
It is very difficult, if not
impossible, to change the basic
demographics of a club’s
membership. Focusing on
attracting new, younger, members
has a strong risk of alienating the
existing members.
The first thing is to be sure that
the club really provides the services
that its current members expect.
The next step may be an everyone-brings-one campaign. 68% of
entry-level skiers reported that
friends or family were the primary
influences that brought them to
the slopes (and into the clubs).
Do younger people still want to
ski (or snowboard) together?
Do the motivations that
originally prompted the
creation of ski clubs still apply?
Surprisingly, yes. In a recent
survey, several hundred younger
people identified themselves as
being interested in group
activities. These groups have the
potential to become clubs. They
are motivated by the opportunity
to ski together and for the
organizer to be rewarded by a free
trip. However, they do not have
any interest in joining existing
clubs. ●

Ski Fitness
Building Strength with Exercise Ball
Excepted from ”Ski Magazine” November 2002
1A
1B
Hamstring Extension
Lie face up and place your heels on the ball.
Your legs and back should be straight. Extend
your arms out from your sides for balance (1A).
Keep your abs and glutes tight throughout the
exercise. Pull your heels toward you as far as
you can, bending your knees and rolling the
ball toward you as you do so (1B). Hold for
one second; then roll the ball back to the
starting position. Do three sets of 12 reps.
2A
Ball Crunch
Lie face up, with the ball supporting your hips and
lower and mid-back (your hips should be toward
the front of the ball). Lift a small "medicine" ball
above your head with both hands (2A). Keep your
arms in line with your ears and a slight bend in
your elbows throughout the exercise. Slowly lift
your head, neck and shoulders as far as you can,
keeping your back straight (2B). Pause, then slowly
lower to the starting position. Do three sets of 12
reps. This exercise works the upper abs. As you
improve, use a heavier medicine ball.
Ski Fitness
Any program should
improve your
coordination,
balance and
flexibility—
allowing you a more
dynamic range of
movement. ●
2B
3A
3B
Prayer
Kneel facing the ball. Interlace your fingers and
place your forearms on top of the ball leaning
forward slightly (3A). Keeping your abs tight
and back straight, slowly roll the ball forward by
extending your forearms (3B). Pause for three
seconds; then roll back to the starting position.
Do three sets of 12 reps. This exercise works the
abs, obliques, lats. As you improve, separate
your hands; this requires more strength and
stability. Or, instead of kneeling, try it with two
feet on the floor, shoulder-width apart and legs
straight. ●

What’s News in the
Ski Industry
by Catherine Ohl, VP Communications
Helmets Mandated—
The Resorts of the
Canadian Rockies—Lake
Louise, Mont-Ste. Anne,
Fernie, Kimberley, Nakiska,
Fortress, Wintergreen, and
Stoneham—is requiring
kids 12 and younger to
wear helmets during
the time that they are
in the resorts' ski and
snowboard schools.
The policy is effective
immediately. The eight
resorts offer helmets for
rent as well as purchase.
The resorts will allow
parents who object to
the policy to opt out.
Winter Hits Early—
Contrary to seasons past,
Mother Nature has decided
to bless winter enthusiasts
with early cold temperatures
and some of the white stuff.
It all started in Colorado
when Beaver Creek reported
its first snowstorm on
September 17. Silverton
and Loveland, CO both
opened officially on
October 17, 2002.
Over in Utah, Snowbird
received the first snowfall
on September 18, 2002.
18
www.lacouncil.org
Out in California, temps in
the south have been cold
enough to allow Mountain
High to fire up its
snowmaking equipment.
Over in Europe, winter has
struck early, as well.
Big Bear Motn. Resorts—
It's official, Snow Summit
has finalized its purchase of
neighboring Big Bear Ski
Resort from Booth Creek
Ski Holdings. The two
resorts will now be jointly
marketed as the Big Bear
Mountain Resorts and,
singularly, Big Bear will
return to its former name of
Bear Mountain Resort.
Bear Mountain, according
to Snow Summit president
Dick Kun, will be oriented
toward the youthful
freestyle skiers and
snowboarders whereas Snow
Summit will cater more to
families and mainstream
sliders. However, customers
can get a taste of each resort
with interchangeable
tickets, except for Saturdays
in January and February
and holidays.
World Price Comparison—
Snow24 has undertaken one
of the largest ever surveys of
lift ticket prices worldwide,
comparing more than 200
ski centers in 25 countries
as far apart as Finland,
Chile, Japan, Australia and
Korea. The study compares
prices for a 6 day adult
ticket taking the week
including January 1st, 2003
as high season, (except for
Southern Hemisphere
resorts).
And, the report made a
study of the cost of skiing
for families and tabulated
which resorts offered the
best value for a typical
family group as compared
to the price for a single
adult.
• Japan is not as expensive as it
used to be and Andorra is not as
cheap as it used to be.
• Finns offer cheapest lift tickets
in Western Europe.
• Switzerland remains the most
expensive in Europe— but not
for families.
• Some Canadian lift tickets are
cheaper than European.
• Hunter Mountain, Japan is
cheaper than Hunter Mountain,
USA.
• Snowbird, Utah is cheaper
than Pas de la Casa, Andorra,
for families.
• USA was confirmed as the
most expensive for lift ticket in
the world but is cheaper than
last year for Europeans.
• A day in Colorado or a week
in Slovakia — same price.●
