Happy New Year! I hope that you all
had a wonderful holiday season and are
now ready to take advantage of the
exciting upcoming events we have
planned for the Atlanta Flute Club!
Our next big event is our annual
Flute Fair, which will take place on
Saturday, February 21st at Georgia
Perimeter College-Clarkston Campus.
Our guest artist this year is virtuoso
flutist, Jasmine Choi. Ms. Choi has served as Principal Flute with the
Vienna Symphony, as well as, Associate Principal flute of the Cincinnati
Symphony. She has now moved on to a career as a full-time soloist and
recording artist. She will present a recital and also conduct a masterclass/
workshop that should be both inspirational and educational. This year,
we are offering five very interesting workshops on a wide variety of flute-
related subjects; you will surely find several of these that you will want
to attend! Our High School and Middle School Honors Choirs will be
performing, and everyone is invited to take part in our Flute Choir reading session (don’t forget to bring your
flute!). Of course, a visit to our exhibits is a must---it is a great opportunity to try new flutes, purchase music,
and browse for other flute-related items.
We are also very excited to announce that Atlanta Symphony Orchestra flutist, Todd Skitch, will be featured
as Guest Artist at our Spring Event, which will take place on Saturday, May 23rd, at Greater Atlanta Christian
School. Please save the date, and watch our website and Facebook page for further details regarding this event!
Please keep us informed of your flute related events! If you have an upcoming recital, other news to share, or
would like to become more involved with the Atlanta Flute Club, please let us know. Join our Facebook page
(search for Atlanta Flute Club), and check our website (atlantafluteclub.org) frequently for updates.
I look forward to seeing you at an Atlanta Flute Club event soon!

2015 Atlanta Flute Fair
Featuring Jasmine Choi!
February 21, 2015
Georgia Perimeter College - Clarkston
Fine Arts Building
The Atlanta Flute Fair is almost here! We are going to
have a wonderful day of concerts, competitions, flute
playing and learning. Our Guest Artist is the world
famous Jasmine Choi. Ms. Choi has recently left the
Vienna Symphony to pursue a full time solo career.
She is one of the flute icons and you’re going to love
hearing her play and teach. She will present a masterclass in the afternoon and the Guest
Artist Recital will be the final event of the fair, (at 5:30p.m.) The day will also feature
a flute choir reading session, a mini recital by the 2015 Junior Young Artist winner and
the 2015 Honors Choirs concert. The Middle School Honors Choir is conducted this
year by Nicole Chamberlain and the High School Honors Choir is under the direction of
Cecilia Price. We are delighted to have 4 outstanding workshops this year – “The Magic
of Moyse” presented by Cate Hummel, “An Overview of Flute Repair” by AFC member,
Alan Horne, “Breathing and Balance” by Andree Martin and “When Tooting Your Flute
Is a Pain in the Neck by Gay Lynn Westover and Nicole Chamberlain. There will be
exhibits with flutes for sale, flute music and flute accessories throughout the day. You
will be informed and inspired by this exciting Flute Splurge.
Here is the schedule for the day. It is very different from previous years, so please take
note. It would be a shame to miss an event because you were using last year’s plan! We
wanted to be sure Ms. Choi had a change to socialize with the members of the audience
for her recital, so we put it at the end of the day.
Visit www.AtlantaFluteClub.org for the latest information!

2015 AFC Spring Event Features ASO Flutist Todd Skitch
Join us May 23, 2015 for our all day Spring event featuring the newest
addition to Atlanta Symphony Orchestra flute section Todd Skitch. He will be
performing and offering masterclasses in the Clifton Jones Theatre in the Sara
D. Williams Fine Arts Center at Greater Atlanta Christian School.
Todd Skitch joined the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra September 2013. He
is a member of the Atlanta Chamber Players and is currently an Artist-inResidence at Kennesaw State University.
Mr. Skitch received degress from University of Toronto and McGill
University in Montreal, Canada. His principal teachers were Timothy
Hutchins and Nora Shulman.
Mr. Skitch has performed with the Memphis Symphony, IRIS Orchestra
with Michael Stern; Bellingham Festival of Music; Memphis Chamber
Music Society; Tanglewood Music Center; Blossom Music Festival at Kent
University, where he received the Maurice Sharp Award for outstanding flute
applicant; Spoleto Festival USA; and the National Repertory Orchestra
Where Are They Now?
Since winning the first Atlanta Flute Club Young Artist Competition, Jeff
earned a Master of Music degree from Yale University where he studied with
Ransom Wilson. While at Yale Jeff developed an interest in the human voice
and how the body creates sound, and how that translates to the flute, which
led to a greater interest in singing, opera and opera singers. That interest
combined with an overwhelming desire to live in New York, Jeff decided to
move away from pursuing flute as a profession and move to New York. He
began working in artist management first at Columbia Artist Management
and then as an Artist Manager with Zemsky Green Artists, a boutique agency
representing many of the most acclaimed opera singers performing today.
Transitioning away from artist management, Jeff joined Palm Beach Opera
as the Director of Artistic Operations where he was responsible for planning
all aspects of the artistic season including casting MainStage performances,
the Young Artist Program as well as expanding the presence of Palm Beach
Opera throughout the community through educational and other performance initiatives. Asked by PBO to suggest ways
to improve the efficiency of the administrative processes of the company, Jeff was introduced to ArtsVision, a robust
and highly configurable software application employed by large scale performing arts organizations that addresses all
aspects of production, personnel and financial management specifically for the performing arts. With his knowledge of
performing arts organizations around the world and the unique issues these organizations face, Jeff was invited to join
ArtsVision as their VP of Client Services where he guides clients on how to achieve their business strategy goals and
establish effective workflow processes through the implementation of ArtsVision. Jeff lives on the Upper West Side of
Manhattan with his wife, Sara, who is the Director of Arts/Assistant Principal at the Bronx Charter School for the Arts,
their dog, a Havanese mix named Georgia, and they are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their first child this spring.

New Board Officers Proposed for 2015-2017 Term
At the Gerneral Board Meeting during the Atlanta Flute Fair, we will vote on the new board officers proposed for the
next term. Below are the proposed board members:
President: Erica Bass Pirtle
Vice President: Cecilia Price
Secretary: Frankie Cavanah
Treasurer: Laura Philpott
Be an Active Atlanta Flute Club Member! We Want YOU!
Have you felt like you don’t really know anyone in the Atlanta Flute Club? A good way to fix that is to share your talents
with the Atlanta Flute Club. We all know you play flute, we have that in common, but what we probably don’t know is
that you’re a photographer, a writer, a graphic designer, an organizer, a sales person, a social media wiz, a grant writer,
an event planner, a people wrangler, or even have an area of expertise we don’t even know about! Even if you don’t have
a super secret talent, let’s face it playing the flute is already a super power, we still need people who can help prep events,
work the Flute Fair (WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR THE FLUTE FAIR!), fold programs, help locate resources,
or just be the muscle to help us set up chairs and music stands. Visit the officers and committee chair page in this
newseletter for contact information. It doesn’t have to be a lifelong committment, but we wouldn’t turn that down either!
Summerflute 2015 will be held on the campus of Columbus State University at
the beautiful Schwob School of Music from May 27-31. This year, the faculty
includes Carol Wincenc, Amy Likar, Andrée Martin, and Kelly Mollnow-Wilson.
Consider coming to Summerflute before heading off to other flute or orchestra
summer festivals!
Summerflute is a unique festival experience in that it brings together traditional
flute studies and performance opportunities with the study of the body in
movement through classes in Body Mapping, Feldenkrais, and Alexander
Technique.
Designed to bring awareness to tension habits, body mapping is a discipline
that trains us to replace our faulty body maps with correct maps in order to rely on our skeletal structure to support our
weight and allow for effortless movement. The resulting ease can offer flutists a wider diversity of tone color, a better
control of dynamic range, arm freedom, and therefore freer technique, stronger endurance, and better clarity and speed of
articulation. Whole body awareness increases an awareness of performance health through injury prevention and aids in
reducing performance anxiety. Class participants will explore how, when we move in accordance with our anatomy, our
performances gain a depth of expression that is communicated directly to our audiences.
