Guardianship Policy
This information is relevant to all parents who are sending a son/daughter to study at
St. Michael’s School, regardless of age. Guardianship is another means of support for your children
whilst they are in the UK.
The school is responsible for the welfare of a student during term time; however younger students,
those under the age of 16, must have an appointed guardian in the UK. The guardian is then
responsible for all airport arrivals and departures and can provide holiday accommodation outside of
term time, if this is required. It also means if a student is suspended or for any reason expelled, they
will have a guardian in the UK who can provide the vital support required. These are of course
extreme circumstances, but on occasion, such a service is required.
Ideally, where possible, parents can appoint a family friend or relative in the UK to act as a guardian.
This provides your child with another adult to turn to should they require assistance, advice, or an
alternative place to stay during holiday periods (Easter, Summer, Christmas/New Year’s).
If however, parents are unable to appoint a family friend or relative resident in the UK, we work
closely with Oxford Guardians who offer a professional guardianship service to ensure the educational
and welfare needs of your child. Any arrangements should be made directly with Oxford Guardians,

Boarding during Christmas or Easter Holidays
During the Easter and Christmas holidays, the hostels and restaurants are closed. Students are
expected to either: go home, stay with friends/family, or stay with their appointed guardian.
