One of a Kind...
Teacher, mentor, friend
Ralph Bonds
M
y name is Ralph W.
Bonds, Jr. and I’ve been a
teacher for 32 years. I’ve
been a teacher in the San
Juan District since 1987 and
at Encina High School since
1994. Being a ‘teacher’ has
always been the most
fulfilling experience of all.
For me, teaching has allowed
me to be creative and feel
enthusiastic about my job.
At Encina I have enjoyed
the opportunity to participate
in the departments of Foreign
Language, Social Studies
and ELL. To those valued
colleagues I offer my thanks.
I have been fortunate to have
a great family and I also have
been fortunate to have had
great teachers and it was
mainly my teachers who
were the one’s who
challenged me to
think critically, to achieve
and to give back to the
community, however, my
‘approach’ to being a teacher
comes from my family.
My family has always been

Daybreak
Galway Kinnell
On the tidal mud,
just before sunset,
dozens of starfishes
were creeping. It
was
as though the
mud were a sky
and enormous,
imperfect stars
moved across it
as slowly
as the actual
stars cross
heaven.
All at once they
stopped,
and as if they had
simply
increased their
receptivity
to gravity they
sank down
into the mud;
they faded down
into it and lay
still; and by the
time
pink of sunset
broke across
them
they were as invisible
as the true stars
at daybreak.

Numbers
by
Mary Cornish
I like the generosity of
numbers.
The way, for example,
they are willing to count
anything or anyone:
two pickles, one door to
the room,
eight dancers dressed as
swans.
I like the domesticity of
addition—
add two cups of milk and
stir—
the sense of plenty: six
plums
on the ground, three
more
falling from the tree.
school
of fish times fish,
whose silver bodies
breed
beneath the shadow
of a boat.
Even subtraction is
never loss,
just addition
somewhere else:
five sparrows take
away two,
the two in someone
else’s
garden now.
There’s an amplitude
to long division,
as it opens Chinese
take-out
box by paper box,
inside every folded
cookie
a new fortune.
And I never fail to
be surprised
by the gift of an
odd remainder,
footloose at the
end:
forty-seven divided
by eleven equals
four,
with three
remaining.

Naming the Stars
Joyce Sutphen
This present tragedy will
eventually
turn into myth, and in the
mist
of that later telling the bell
tolling
now will be a symbol, or, at
least,
a sign of something long since
lost.
This will be another one of
those
loose changes, the rearrangement of
hearts, just parts of old lives
patched together, gathered
44 Freshmen
into
a dim constellation, small
consolation.
Look, we will say, you
can almost see
the outline there: her
fingertips
touching his, the faint
fusion
of two bodies breaking
into light.
