COMPASS ACADEMY APPLICATION
2015-2016
Compass Academy has 150 slots for incoming freshmen. Of those, 20 are being set aside for
a lottery for the siblings of current Compass students. Another 30 slots are being set aside to
ensure Compass Academy’s demographics are representative of the district. They will be filled by
students who meet certain criteria such as socio-economic status, ethnicity, need for special
programs, etc.
Of the remaining slots, 50 will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis with the first 50
applications being automatically accepted as long as students meet the requirements and
live within the boundaries of Idaho Falls School District 91. The remaining slots will be
filled by a general lottery on March 4. Students who are not admitted through first-come, firstserve or the general lottery will be waitlisted based on when their application was submitted.
Applications will be accepted beginning 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Compass
Academy, 955 Garfield. Then, applications will be accepted at the district office, 690 John Adams
Parkway, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, through Thursday, Feb. 26.

Idaho Falls School District 91’s magnet high school, Compass Academy, provides students with a
completely different experience than the one they would receive in the district’s comprehensive high
schools. Please take a moment to review some of the features that make this school unique.
⇒ Students must apply to attend Compass Academy. There are no GPA or academic requirements.
Applications will be accepted at Compass Academy beginning 8:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 21.
Applications will then be accepted at the District Office, 690 John Adams Parkway, Monday, Feb. 23,
7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. The application window closes at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 26.
⇒ Compass Academy uses project-based learning, which allows students to learn key concepts by
solving problems and applying what they have learned to the real world.
⇒ Students will learn collaboratively, doing most work in groups.
⇒ Compass Academy students will work in a 1:1 environment. They will receive a laptop and use that
device to do research, participate in projects and submit homework. They will also be responsible for that
device, including any damage or loss that may occur.
⇒ Compass Academy students will take core subjects such as English, Math, Science and Social
Studies, as well as electives. However, the school does not offer the full array of electives offered at the
comprehensive high schools.
⇒ Compass Academy students must meet the same graduation requirements as students in the
comprehensive high schools. However, students at Compass Academy may take classes in a different
sequence than students at the comprehensive high schools.
⇒ Compass Academy students will be graded on content knowledge, as well as other critical career
skills like growth, ownership, collaboration and written and oral communication skills.
⇒ Compass Academy students will present their content knowledge and skills to community members
on a regular basis. They may also be required to do internships and community service.
⇒ Compass Academy students will be expected to abide by the school’s unique culture of trust, respect
and responsibility.
⇒ Compass Academy students will take part in sports and extracurricular activities at their home high
school, the school they are zoned to attend.
Your signatures indicate you understand Compass Academy is unique and different than District 91’s
comprehensive high schools and that you would like to attend the school for the 2015-2016 school year.
