PREVIEW – ROUND 13
By BRIDGET SCOTT
AFTER Hampton Park failed to
take it up to Beaconsfield last
week, ROC will face a similarly difficult task this round.
Beacy is a force to be reckoned
with and are edging for the top
spot.
However Doveton is unlikely
to surrender this position three
games clear on the ladder, and
clear favourites for the game this
week against Hampton Park.
After two week’s off Pakenham
will take the court again this week,
ready to face the camp at Tooradin
who are beaming with confidence
after a good win last round over
Cranbourne.
Despite the win for the
Seagulls last weekend, the Lions
would hope to take out their competition this week after improved
form in recent weeks.
Berwick will also hope for a
win as it gets set to face Cranbourne, while the strong side at
Narre Warren will step aside this
week for a rest.

AFTER a devastating one goal loss to Narre
Warren in Round 3, Berwick came back with
a vengeance last weekend but proved still unable to overcome their rivals.
Berwick coach Melissa Ahearn was the first
to admit her team was seeking revenge.
“Our A-Grade girls came over to play their
arch nemesis Narre Warren with one goal in
mind,” she said.
It was a fight until the very last minute with
Berwick on the tails of their competitors all
game.
At both the quarter time and half time
breaks Berwick were only one goal behind, but
turned it around in the third quarter to lead by
one goal at three-quarter time.
However Berwick’s comeback in the third
term was enough to push Narre Warren back
into action and the Magpies managed to run
away with the game by six goals.
Ahearn said a few costly errors for her side
caused them to lose the game.
“Constant turnovers along with poor goal
conversion cost us in the end,” she said.
“Narre made the least amount of errors in
a high pressured tussle to win by six points.”
While Berwick was unable to redeem itself, one side which managed to do so was
Tooradin after a huge turn-up when it got over
Cranbourne.
Despite a 16-goal loss earlier in the season,
Tooradin proved the equal to Cranbourne this
time around with a 10-goal win.
Tooradin fired out of the blocks and led
from the first whistle to barely give Cranbourne a look in.
Unfortunately Hampton Park didn’t share
in the same success, going down to Beaconsfield by 73 goals, for a final score of 85-12.

Kaela caught up in a perfect Storm
AS the seconds ticked down in the
Victorian Netball League (VNL) grand
final, Monash Storm under-19’s netballer Kaela Hughes felt one of the
purest joys in sport - captaining a premiership team.
Monash Storm’s VNL Under-19
side won the club’s first premiership
in that age group at the State Netball
and Hockey Centre.
The win had a certain MPNFL flavour to it with Hughes, from Beaconsfield, captaining the side to a two-goal
victory against City West Falcons.
In a huge turnaround from last season, Monash went from second bottom to front-runners all season and
eventual lifted the cup as premiers
last week at the State Netball Centre
in front of a predominately Monash
dominated crowd.
“The highlight of the night for me
was looking up at the clock with only
six seconds remaining after our goal
shooter Nat Billing had put us two
goals up,” Hughes said.
“Actually being overcome with
emotion knowing that at that moment
that all our hard work and sacrifice
had come to fruition.
“As captain looking into my team
mates’ eyes and being able to convey
to them how proud I was of every single one of them.”
Having time to reflect on a successful season for herself and her
teammates, Hughes praised not only
Monash Storm, but also her local
club Beaconsfield and also Gippsland
Storm Netball Club, which over the
last few years has helped Hughes develop her game to a level that allows
her to compete at the elite level.
“Beaconsfield Netball Club has
been absolutely outstanding with the
amount of support they have given
me,” Hughes said.

“They are like an extended family
to me, always offering me nothing but
encouragement when it comes to my
VNL commitments, and also to take
every opportunity that comes my way
with two hands.”
“Gippsland Storm gave me opportunities to develop my game to the
next level, and I was lucky enough
to be coached by three passionate
coaches - Simon O’Shanassy, Jodie
Hanssen and Brendan Murnane - who
were all there on the night.”
Getting the chance to represent
Monash Storm as one of the first
Gippsland Storm graduates was a
point of great pride for Hughes.
“Storm’s merger with Monash this
year has so many benefits to Netballers in our region,” Hughes said.
“It now provides a defined pathway
from your local club to VNL, and it’s
great to be part of such a fantastic club
environment.”
Monash under 19s won the VNL
grand final 41-39 over City West on 2
July.
