GATHERING
WE PREPARE: In Isaiah it is the one God who sits above the earth and numbers the stars—
it is that God who strengthens the powerless. So in Jesus' healing work we see the hand of the
creator God, lifting up the sick woman to health and service, called “Diakonia.” Like Simon's
mother-in-law, we are lifted up to health and “diakonia.” Following Jesus means we
strengthen the powerless, while renewing our own strength in quiet times of prayer.

God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to
live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive
your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another:
Most merciful God,
we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned
against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have

Isaiah 40:21–31

The Judeans in exile have a good reason to be hopeful: the one who will bring them to freedom
is the God who created the world, the God who subdues the rulers of the earth and gives
strength to those who are weary.
“And now the Reading”
Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers;
who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in;
who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing.
Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth,
when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble.
To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One.
Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these?
He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great
in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing.
Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel,
"My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God"?
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is
unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless.
Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted;
but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.

God entrusted Paul with the responsibility of bringing the gospel to diverse people. Hence the
focus of Paul’s ministry is not his own rights or privileges as an apostle but the privilege of
serving God by freely sharing the good news of Christ with others.

If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me,
and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel! For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward;
but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. What then is my reward? Just this:
that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my
rights in the gospel.
For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win
more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I
became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those
under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free
from God's law but am under Christ's law) so that I might win those outside the law. To the
weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that I
might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its
blessings.

Everywhere Jesus goes, many people expect him to set them free from oppression. Everywhere
he goes, he heals them and sets them free. Disease, devils, and death are running for their lives.
The forces that diminish human life are rendered powerless by Jesus.
“And now The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the 1st chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.”
As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James
and John. Now Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at
once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she
began to serve them.
That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons.
And the whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured many who were sick with
various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak,
because they knew him.

In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and
there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they
said to him, "Everyone is searching for you." He answered, "Let us go on to the neighboring
towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do." And he
went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons.

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,

THANKSGIVING FOR THE WORD
Let us pray.
O God of justice and love, we give thanks to you that you illumine our way through life
with the words of your Son. Give us the light we need, awaken us to the needs of others,
and at the end bring all the world to your feast; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and
Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory forever. Amen.
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be
done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as
we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us
from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.

The Annual Meeting of the St. John Lutheran Home Corporation will be held on
Monday, February 16th, at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd. All delegates

JESUS is history’s most familiar figure. But there's a lot more to Jesus than
most Christians realize. The Epiphany season is the perfect time to discover
Jesus! I hope you will be able to join me for Trinity's new five week adult
forum, Who Is This Man?: The Unpredictable Impact of the Inescapable
Jesus this Sunday. There will be a short video featuring Pastor John
Ortberg, and discussion. If you are not big on discussing, you are welcome
to take part by listening--no one will be called upon to read aloud or answer
questions. Pastor Ortberg's book shows how Jesus made an inescapable
impact on our world, and you will learn how you can make one too! I have

CARING CONVERSATIONS
Discuss in your household or small group:
• Share about a time when you felt sick or unwell.
• Jesus helped and healed many people. In what ways have you experienced God helping and healing you?
• People came to Jesus with their problems and their worries. What problems or worries can you bring to Jesus today?
DEVOTIONS
Prayer is sometimes called a “faith practice.” We learn how to pray by praying with others - by “practicing” with them. In the home, parents
have a special responsibility to teach their children how to pray by praying with and for them. Learn and practice this “five finger prayer” as
a household. Put your hands together, palm to palm and pointing upwards. Each finger on the hand represents a topic for prayer.
• Thumb: Your thumb is nearest to you. Pray for the people who are closest to you, such as family and friends.
• Pointer Finger: Pray for those who point the way – those who lead, teach, guide or heal others, including government leaders,
teachers, doctors and
pastors.
• Tallest Finger: This finger reaches up to the heavens like a church steeple. Give God thanks and praise for all the gifts he has given
you and the good things he has done for you.
• Ring Finger: This is our weakest finger. Pray for all those who are sick, in trouble or in pain. Pray also for God to forgive you for your
weaknesses.
• Little Finger: This is the smallest finger and reminds us of where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As Jesus
says, “The least shall be the greatest among you.” So last of all, pray about your own needs and worries.
SERVICE
Caring for the sick is a special way of showing Jesus’ love. Visit or contact a sick friend or relative this next week. Bring their needs to
Jesus in prayer throughout the week.
RITUALS AND TRADITIONS
Christian people are praying people. There are many traditions we can introduce into our homes to remind us to pray and to help make
prayer a routine part of our lives. Here are some ideas:
• Have a prayer whiteboard where household members can jot down prayer requests during the week for others to see.
• Make up a photo display of people you wish to pray for regularly.
• Start a household prayer journal in which to record prayer points and answers to prayer.
• Display well known prayers on your walls, such as the Lord’s Prayer.

This Week’s Prayer Concerns
…for all who grieve the death of loved ones… that God’s
Spirit would comfort and assure family and friends of our
Lord’s promise to unite us with those we love and bring
forth a new heaven and a new earth where there will be no
more crying, nor pain, nor death anymore…
Pray for the church…that God would give strength to the
weak and power to the faint by making us agents of God’s
healing and wholeness throughout the creation…
…for our schools of learning…that we would give
thanks for teachers and support staff who have dedicated
their lives to teaching and mentoring, and that God would
empower the students they teach to learn with the passion
of knowing God as the source of all truth…
…for our nation…that our appointed and elected leaders,
who are entrusted with the responsibility to govern with
wisdom and goodness would serve our nation with in
righteousness as well as compassion…

compassion and mercy to all who are embittered or
arrogant or hateful so that their separation from others
would give way to mercy and love and reconciliation…
…for those newly married…that God would be glorified
in their union, filling them with the light and truth of the
Holy Spirit throughout their future days together…
…for the Search of a New Youth Director or the Seeking
of a Seminary Intern…that the Holy Spirit would guide
and bless the efforts of the Boards of Young People’s
Work and Lay Ministry as they seek the direction of
God’s guidance in securing help to serve the needs of
youth and families in our congregation…

outbreaks of unprecedented severity…that the ELCA
World Hunger & Lutheran Disaster response and the

military personnel would be kept safe in their serving the
needs of others…
