Submission Guidelines
There are a number of requirements for presentation submissions at the National Suicide
Prevention Conference (NSPC). The submissions must be made online using the official NSPC
portal, accessed via http://suicidepreventionaust.org/conferences/.
Each submission should be based on completed works or projects that are in progress and
reasonably expected to be completed by the conference date. Abstracts that show new
knowledge has been generated and that attempt to bridge the gap between research, policy,
practice and lived experience are preferred. The concurrent sessions are intended to share
new knowledge and insights.
The NSPC Program Advisory Committee gives priority to abstracts related to the conference
theme of 'Changing Systems, Changing Lives – The Intersection of Research, Policy, Practice
and Lived Experience'. Key selection criteria are:
1.
Practical application and/or learning objective
2.
Originality of abstract and new un-presented material
3.
Clarity, completeness and quality
4.
Relevance to the conference theme
We encourage presenters to include some viewpoints from individuals with a lived
experience of suicide or to consider co-presenting with a person who can share their
perspective on the topic based on a personal lived experience of suicide. That said,
perspectives from lived experience must be focused on lessons learned and look to how
future outcomes can be improved for those touched by suicide.
Abstract submissions will be reviewed by the Program Advisory Committee. Subject area
experts will be engaged by the Committee to assist in the process however the Committee
will have the final decision on which abstracts are accepted, the presentation timeframe and
its allocation in the program. The call for papers receives many more submissions than the
Committee can accept; as such, we encourage applicants to provide as thorough a
submission as possible given the increasing competitiveness of this process.
The deadline for abstract submissions is 5:00 pm (AEST) on Thursday 2 April, 2015. Late
submissions WILL NOT be accepted. All abstract submissions must be made using the online
system.
Presentation format options
There are 3 presentation formats for the NSPC:
1. Oral presentation
Oral presentations report on a variety of areas including original research based on the
methodical collection and analysis of data; the application or testing of theory to new
programs or activities; or review and synthesis of research. The focus of oral presentations
must be on the provision of new knowledge and learnings and not simply descriptions of
services, programs or activities.
Oral presentations will be 20 minutes in duration (including set up and presentation) plus 3
minutes discussion (total 23 minutes). Times will be strictly enforced by chairpersons presentations running over 20 minutes will be cut short. Presenters are encouraged to
practice talks and timing. Oral presentations will be scheduled during the concurrent
sessions and will be co-scheduled with other paper presentations focused on a related topic.
Presentations must be provided in PowerPoint format (if using). Presentations must be
checked by the presenter with the audio-visual technician in the speaker’s preparation room
as soon as possible after registering at the Conference venue. Presenters should arrive at
their session room, introduce themselves to the chairperson and familiarize themselves with
the audio-visual facilities including checking their presentation at least 10 minutes prior to
session commencement.
The Program Advisory Committee reserves the right to assign a submitted oral presentation
as a poster presentation based on content and topic.
2. Poster presentation
Posters report on a variety of areas including original research; the application or testing of
theory to new programs or activities; or review and synthesis of research. Posters that
present new and innovative findings and include implications for practice are encouraged.
Posters will be presented during the tea breaks, providing a lively forum for discussions
among colleagues and interested browsers.
Presenters are responsible for preparing their posters. Posters display the essential contents
of the project (i.e., abstract, short narrative, enlarged pictures or graphics, brief discussion).
Each poster board is 1.2m wide x 1.8m high, mounted vertically. Posters must be portrait
size, 1m wide x 1.5m high. There is limited space in the Poster Display area and Posters
that are produced landscape are unable to be accommodated.
Presenters must prepare all posters beforehand in a form enabling easy mounting.
All posters must be mounted by the author during an allocated time period (of 1-2
hours) prior to the beginning of the poster display, and removed by the designated time.
Posters should be typed in clear bold print that can be easily read from distances over
one metre with the title displayed in block capitals of minimum size 25mm (1") at the top
of the poster. The title should also display the names of the author(s) and the
institution(s) of origin.
Illustrations should be professionally drawn (hand drawn material will not be accepted).
All contents should be simple and not overburdened with detail - "minimising detail
maximises information transfer".
Presenters may provide handout material relating to their poster.
Velcro must be supplied by the poster presenter.
3. Workshop
Workshops have a practice focus and often describe innovative or best practices or programs
in communities, schools, healthcare provider settings, or other settings. Workshops must
include evaluation findings and may include underlying theory or research, case studies, and
lessons learned. Workshops are instructional and interactive, with time for questions and
discussion. Workshops will be scheduled for 90 minutes. Time and space constraints limit the
number of workshops we can accept. The program committee may assign workshop
proposals to other presentation formats based on content and topic.
Note: we will have invited symposia on specific interest areas running within the concurrent
sessions. These are typically groupings of 3-5 abstracts. If you would like to propose a

Before you begin your online submission
For the first time the NSPC conference program will be made available to delegates on an
app, suitable for smartphone or tablet. The data submitted on the abstract system will be
directly transferred to the app therefore it is essential that all information is entered using
correct spelling and punctuation, ready for publication.

review this list before entering the abstract submission portal. It is recommended you
prepare all text in Word, checking your character limits*, and then copy and paste into the
online system.

Once you have submitted your abstract online, you will receive an auto-generated email
containing your personal access key. This access key can be used to enter the 'Speaker Zone'
where you can view or make changes to your submitted abstract.

By submitting an abstract you agree to the following:
The acceptance of an abstract does not imply provision of travel, accommodation or
registration for the National Suicide Prevention Conference.
Costs associated with preparation or presentation of the abstract, or any costs
associated with attendance at the National Suicide Prevention Conference are the
responsibility of the presenter(s). If abstract is selected, the presenter(s) will be required
to register as a delegate for the full conference at discounted rate (equivalent to the
early bird rate).
Successful abstracts must be presented by the submitted presenter(s).
The person submitting the abstract confirms that the submission has been approved by
all authors/presenters.
Acceptance or otherwise is at the discretion of the Program Advisory Committee whose
decision is final.
