The ways of the world are changing at a rate faster than ever before. There
was a time not so long ago when something as life threatening as cancer struck,
your only option was to take up residency in a public hospital death bed and hope
for the best. Then came a breakthrough in treatments and a little more hope, now
with early detection, treatment and the right support, cancer can be beaten. Even
in some of the more challenging cases, life can be extended to the point many
people living with cancer can live for years not months.
But one thing that will never change is the heart rending affect cancer has on
families. It’s scary and debilitating. The need for local support networks like
the Cancer Society in Queenstown has not diminished. If anything the need for
support has increased as people live longer with the disease.
A fast moving modern phenomena of the last few months are ‘give a little’ and
crowd funding websites that raise money for causes mainly driven by social
media. What a great way to help out an unfortunate family doing it tough with
cancer. That family being one of many locally and nationally that are facing the
same situation. The difference between the crowd funded family and those we
don’t hear about is someone with savvy social media skills is putting them in the
public spotlight. What about the others in similar or worse situations?

All cancer sufferers deserve support, and we as a caring community still need
local support networks like the local Cancer Society.
In this ever changing multimedia world, traditional fundraising is struggling to get
our attention. But forward thinking locals involved with the Cancer Society based
in Queenstown are being proactive in their quest to offer support for everyone
affected by cancer in our community. In the next few weeks they open a retail
store selling preloved goods at Remarkables’ Park. This initiative gives us the
chance to give a little of something other than just cash. Give a little time by
lending a helping hand. Give a little of what you do not need but still has a value
to someone else. Or simply shop where all the proceeds help people affected by
cancer in our local community.

Re-Zone? No Go!
My family have a very long history with Queenstown
area. We have several relatives residing in Frankton.
Five years ago we did our homework purchasing
24B McBride Street needing a property in a ‘LOW
DENSITY RESIDENTIAL ZONE’. The property
was purchased for our son and family. It is to be our
retirement home in about 5 years.
I totally object saying NO to the councils proposal
to rezone our residential area in Frankton. This
would undermine our present quality of living
life and devalued our home. Medium Density
Residential apartments would spring up all around
our Low Density Apartment. Our views and winter
sunlight will be reduced. There are many retirees
here. I believe this proposal would is detrimental to
all residents in the area.
It subjects us all to the mercy of greedy developers
and possible corruption. The present infrastructure
is not capable of handling the increase in: People
(site overcrowding, there will be no healthy outdoor
living for the protection of children on their property)
Traffic (McBride Street and surrounding streets will
need to be widened) Remarkables School (is at
capacity facing imminent overcrowding) Wastewater
(is at capacity) The Carbon Footprint (can increase
10 to 20 fold on one site) Pollution (from Increased
Vehicles, Noise, Rubbish, Tagging, Contamination)
Crime (The area will go into decline and good
people will leave.)
There are many rural areas that can be rezoned for
medium density housing. Similar to Lake Hayes
development. This will be developed from the onset
to have infrastructure in place. To attempt to convert
a low density residential area into a medium density
residential area would be to break something that
is fixed.
I could understand the proposal if Franktons Low
Density area was demolished then rebuild as a
medium density area. Your proposal is madness.
To stop any conflict of interest an independent
committee must be involved in the decision process.

I can’t comment on your thoughts around Mark
Solomon but do agree with the point that your are
trying to highlight which is the perceived lack of Ngai
Tahu presence at a grass roots cultural level.
My family along with good people like Ned and
Leah Webster have worked over the years to
support whanau in town. I am Ngai Tahu and have
been pro active over many years in the Queenstown
community.
A monorail between Frankton and
Queenstown? No, that’s not for us - that’s
more a Shelbyville idea..
Debate like this is great as it creates opportunities to
build relationships and I for one am happy to talk
to anyone about the whakapapa of this area and
as I have done over those years help bridge that
relationship between community and Iwi.

region. Ngai Tahu Tourism (appear to) have the
money to promote that story. What’s lacking in
this equation? I genuinely don’t know. If you
fund me I’d promote it. I’d unfortunately be
promoting it from an archaeologically educated
pakeha perspective

d. how your proposed job description compares to the subject areas of your

Each application for a Graduate Work Experience visa is assessed on a case
by case basis. It is therefore not easy to provide a list of the occupations that
would allow you to qualify for one, although the above guide will assist you to
determine potential eligibility when an offer is made.
