AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE ENGINEER
INTRODUCTION:
Aeroplane has always interested mankind. This urge to fly like
birds and have a panoramic view of the world below lead to
invention of aeroplane. Ever since aeroplane technology has
advanced created the aircraft which perform superbly. These
super machine are maintained in their excellent performing
condition by the highly trained Aircraft Maintenance
Engineers' (AME). It is a privilege to be an AME and be
responsible for this specialised job.
This also required that this field of aircraft maintenance
should be regulated in order that safety of public travelling in
the aircraft is not endangered.
The Parliament of India, through Aircraft Act, 1934 has
empowered Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to
control and regulate all matters related to Civil Aviation. All
maintenance on all Civil Aircraft and their certification is
required to be carried out by an Aircraft Maintenance
Engineer Licenced by DGCA. Such regulatory provisions are there in all countries and all aircraft
world over need to be maintained and certified by Licenced AME's.
MARKET SCENARIO
Approximately around 5,00,000 aircraft are flying around the
world. As the number of aircraft is growing so is the market for
the AME's required to maintain and certify them. They are
highly trained, disciplined and skilled persons who have
ensured that air travel is the safest mode of travel.
India is one of the fastest developing countries in the world.
Today not even one percent of our population travels by air
and we have more than 2000 aircraft operating in India.
Imagine the growth when just one percent of our 125 Crore citizens start travelling by air. To
reach that level and to harness this potential the Government brought in open sky policy. It has
encouraged private airlines and aircraft operators to launch new airlines. In addition to many
domestic airlines, several International airlines are also operating through India. Most airlines
are earning good revenues. Despite the ever increasing airline network it is not able to meet the
demand. Hence there is wide demand-supply gap. More aircraft are needed to bridge this gap.
Therefore more airlines are seeking permission to start operations.
SHORTAGE OF MANPOWER
The present manpower is not sufficient to man the present
airline operations. Government has allowed foreign AME's to
work in India to cover the shortage. There is acute shortage of
qualified AME's. There is an urgent need for more Aircraft
Maintenance Engineers. Demand supply gap has ensured
high salaries for qualified AME's.
