Neither GÉANT Association nor GEANT Limited shall be liable for any fees claimed in respect of any referrals by employment businesses/agencies in the absence of the required written authorisation. 1 JOB DESCRIPTION FORM Job title: Senior IT Engineer Team: IT Reports to: Chief Information Officer Hours: 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday) Normal place of work: City House, Cambridge Position Summary (indicate the overall purpose of the role in one or two sentences): Responsible for the operational aspects of GEANT Limited’s on premise and cloud-based, Windows/Linux IT infrastructure. Specifically responsible for the core infrastructure – networking, storage, virtualisation and related systems and services. Supervisory Responsibilities (in relation to other staff): Timesheet Manager for Contractor Main responsibilities (Note: In addition to these functions employees are required to carry out such other duties as may reasonably be required): Evaluate, design and implement IT systems and infrastructure Day to day administration, operations, monitoring, troubleshooting and support of IT systems and infrastructure Manage outsourced services and suppliers Manage IT led projects and provide support for non-IT led projects Produce reports for management On call working (set out any requirements or mark as not applicable): Not Applicable Shift working (set out any requirements or mark as not applicable): Not Applicable Extent of travel required to perform the role (indicate the area in which travel is required and the frequency): As and when required, normally within Europe and sometimes further afield. 2 Person Specification Qualifications and education Essential Educated to degree level in computer science / related field or equivalent work experience Core certifications in IT Administration Desirable Advanced certification in IT and/or networking Professional skills, experience and knowledge required Essential Hands on experience of IT administration, implementation and support Good technical and problem solving skills – at least 3rd line support level In depth understanding of different components of a Microsoft Windows estate e.g. DNS, DHCP, AD, ADFS, Group Policies, Sites and Services etc. Advanced Windows Server Administration of Windows server 2008/2012, Exchange 2013, Office 365, Lync Understanding of standard corporate IT services such as database servers, IP Telephony, VPN, Firewalls etc. Good understanding of virtualisation technologies e.g. Hyper-V, VMWare Knowledge of storage technologies, networking principles and network security Basic knowledge of Unix/Linux Willingness to help with 1st and 2nd line support if necessary Desirable Worked within a public and private sector environment Infrastructure management and monitoring using MS Systems Centre Experience of running ‘virtual machines as a service’ Knowledge of upcoming virtualisation technologies e.g. OpenStack Knowledge of storage technologies such as Dell, NetApps, EMC etc. Knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux Understanding of routing and switching technology e.g. Juniper, Cisco, HP etc. Understanding of project management, ITIL principles, BS Standards Personal Skills and Attributes Results-oriented with a positive attitude and the ability to solve problems creatively Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure – can do attitude Highly organised and able to manage workload, prioritise and delegate work Willing and able to learn quickly and independently – essential because of the wide range of technologies used by the Company and the range of activities required in the role Flexible – willing and able to take on new activities Ability to work both independently and as part of a team Good verbal and excellent written communication skills Good documentation skills 3 Benefit Information Benefits include 30 days’ holiday plus public holidays As from successful completion of the employee’s probationary period private medical insurance paid for by the Company for the employee and partner (with the option to join children to the scheme on payment by the employee of the rate offered by the provider) Sick pay subject to provisions set out in the terms of employment Dental Insurance Scheme, which can be joined at the start of each year, on payment of an annual premium Company Pension Scheme subject to provisions set out in the terms of employment and the pensions handbook Childcare vouchers, if required, under salary sacrifice subject to the Company’s policy in respect of salary sacrifice for childcare vouchers 4
