Sunday School
Sunday School is offered for all ages between our 9:00
am and 11:00 am worship services from 10:10 am to
10:55 am. The classes are designed to be age appropriate so that we all can deepen our faith in Jesus Christ.
Holy Eucharist/Communion
Holy Eucharist, also known as Communion, is open
to all of the baptized of all denominations. The
Episcopal Church has an open table and you are
invited to participate as you feel comfortable. The
ushers will direct you forward to receive the sacrament. To receive the Eucharist, place your right
palm over your left and you will be given the Bread;
the Wine will be offered and you may guide the chalice
to your lips. If you prefer not to drink from it, leave the
wafer on your palm and the chalice bearer will dip it
in the cup and place it in your mouth. If you wish to
receive a Blessing in lieu of the Elements, simply cross
your arms over your chest.
Children and Nursery Care
We love children and we invite them to worship with
us. We also offer a professionally staffed nursery for all
children up through 7 years old from 8:45am to 12:30pm.
The nursery is located in the Education Building past the
reception desk.
Cell Phones
Please, turn your cell phones off so that they do not
disturb you or those around you during worship.
Gluten Free communion wafers are available at the Lectern Communion Station.
Gluten Free emblems are available in the
Narthex so that you can identify yourself
to the person administering communion at
that station. These wafers are made from
rice and soy.
Pastoral Care
Hospitals no longer notify churches of your admission. If you have not received a visit or phone call
from the clergy within 24 hours of your hospitalization, it is likely we do not know you are in the hospital.

Today’s Music
Liturgy We Live
Today we hear organ music of Gerald Near (b. 1942).
Mr. Near was Director of Music at Church of the Holy
Faith in Santa Fe before his retirement. The prelude is
based on the communion hymn “Humbly I adore thee.”
The postlude, “Processional,” was composed for a
friend’s wedding and is wonderful and dramatic music.

What has been labeled, “The Lord’s Prayer” (aka, Pater Noster, or the Our Father) is found only in Matthew’s and Luke’s gospels (Luke’s version is shorter).
The closing, or doxology, (“For Thine is the kingdom,” etc) is not found in either version. Some Church
manuscripts from the fourth century include it while
others do not. Roman Catholics have never included
the doxology in their liturgy, but uniformly the Orthodox branch of Christendom has prayed this concluding phrase. The English wording of the Lord’s Prayer
(used by both Anglicans and Catholics) was the one
first mandated by Henry VIII while the English church
still communed with Rome, and it did not include the
doxology. Later translations replaced “which art” with
“who art” and “in earth” with “on earth.” The first few
editions of the BCP did not add the doxology. However, during the reign of Elizabeth I and a resurgence
in the desire to rid the Church of England from Catholic vestiges, the Lord’s Prayer was changed to include
the doxology. The Lord’s Prayer in most instances in
our BCP concludes with the doxology. However, when
it is used in our Compline Service (pp 132-133), it is

The Cathedral Choir sings a setting of Mark’s account
of the Transfiguration. The anthem, with music by Knut
Nystedt, opens with a very mystical-sounding tone cluster. Nystedt 1915-2014) was born in Kristiania (now
Oslo), Norway, and grew up in a Christian home where
hymns and classical music were an important part of
everyday life. He studied with Aaron Copland among
others. Nystedt was organist in Torshov kirke in Oslo
from 1946 to 1982 and taught choir conducting at the
University of Oslo from 1964 to 1985.
Hymn Notes
O wondrous type! O vision fair - Hymnal 137
This anonymous Latin hymn dates from the 15th century
and was included in the Sarum breviary for the Transfiguration. The tune, WAREHAM, is one of the most durable
produced by English country psalmists of the period of
west-gallery choirs and bands. Like most of Knapp’s
tunes, it was named after one of the small towns and
villages in which he operated as a singing teacher and
itinerant bookseller; Wareham is also his birthplace and
the home of his youth.

the night and turnest the shadow of death into the

Ye watchers and ye holy ones - Hymnal 618
Riley, who helped edit The English Hymnal (1906) and
translated Latin and Greek hymns, wrote this festive
hymn for this tune. The first stanza names the nine orders
of angels. The second stanza is about the Blessed Virgin
Mary, the Bearer of the Eternal Word. Stanza three brings
in all the saints in heaven and the last stanza calls all of
us to join in singing praises to the Triune God.

Glory be to thee, O Lord.
A Reading from the Second Epistle to the Corinthians.
Even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are
perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded
the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who
is the image of God. For we do not proclaim ourselves;
we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your
slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, “Let
light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts
to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in
the face of Jesus Christ.
Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and
John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his
clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth
could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah
with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said
to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make
three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for
Elijah.” He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the
cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved;
listen to him!” Suddenly when they looked around, they
saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus. As they
were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell
no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of
Man had risen from the dead.

Organ Recital
Those Serving Today
St. Paul’s Cathedral Music Society is excited to sponsor
organist Clive Driskill-Smith in concert Sunday, February 22 at 5:00. The concert is free and everyone is invited.
Clive is sub-organist at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford
and teaches at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
He will perform music of Harris, Bach, Vierne, Walton,
Bovet and others. After a year as Organ Scholar at Winchester Cathedral and Assistant Organist at Winchester
College, he went up to Christ Church, Oxford University, as the Organ Scholar. While at Christ Church, he was
awarded the ARCM (Associate of the Royal College of
Music) diploma in Piano Performance and the FRCO
(Fellow of the Royal College of Organists) diploma. He
has had further study on the Continent with Marie-Claire
Alain, Guy Bovet, Andrea Marcon, Luigi Tagliavini and
Dr Harald Vogel. Winner of the Royal College of Organists’ Performer of the Year Competition in 2000 and the
Calgary International Organ Competition in 2002, Clive
has performed in the UK, France, Belgium, Germany,
Italy, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Finland, South Africa,
Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Canada, the USA, South
America, Australia and New Zealand.
