The Spirit of the Lord has been given to us
for He has anointed us.
He has sent us to bring the good news
to the poor,
To proclaim liberty to captives
and to the blind new sight,
To set the downtrodden free,
to proclaim the Lord’s year of favor.

good stewards!

SCHOOL REGISTRATION
Due to bad weather, registration for our
Full-Day Kindergarten Program and for new First
Grade students was postponed last Tuesday. It
will be held this Tuesday, February 17, 2015.
St. Eugene Parishioners may register from 8:30–
10:00 AM in the School Hall. Our current
Kindergarten students will not need to attend
registration. They will re-register with Grades 1-7 in
the spring.
Parishioners with children currently in Grades 16 who are interested in bringing their children to St.
Eugene School should call the school office at 610622-2909 for further information. Those not
registered in St. Eugene Parish but interested in
attending our Parish Elementary School should call
the school office for more information or to be
placed on our waiting list.
WHY ASHES ON
ASH WEDNESDAY?
Why does the priest or deacon make the sign of
the cross on our foreheads with a
smudge of ashes on the first day of
Lent? Since ancient times, ashes
have been a symbol of sorrow.
After burning wood in a fireplace,
the householder is left with ashes
that need to be cleaned up. Having
ashes on our foreheads is a sign that we are feeling
the sorrow and guilt of sin, that we need to set about
the work of cleaning up, of ridding ourselves of the
burden and sorrow of sin.
Lent is a time to prepare for Easter, and we
prepare best by feeling sorry for our sins and
turning away from them. We resolve to sin no more
and to be ready to celebrate the new life of Easter as
a new person.
Ashes are also a symbol of our own mortality.
When Adam and Eve disobeyed, God told them
they would have a life of toil and suffering. God
also told them they will die: “…you are dust, and to
dust you shall return.” During Lent we are asked to
recall that death is our destiny and that Lent is the
time to prepare for the new Easter life that Jesus
brings.
The ashes we receive on Ash Wednesday are
made by burning the palm branches left over from
last year’s Palm Sunday. Some oil is added to make
the ashes stick to our foreheads. As you receive
ashes, listen for the minister to say, “Turn away
from sin and be faithful to the gospel” (based on
Mark 1:15), or “Remember that you are dust, and to
dust you will return” (based on Genesis 3:19).
