One of the main highlights of Day 2 was
the exclusive session with the country’s
top hoteliers. For the first time in its history,
MIFB brought together a unique group of
hotel representatives to the exhibition in
a bid to provide a two-way connection
between hoteliers and exhibitors.

If caffeine-based drinks are not your cup
of tea, there are other options in the form
of vitaminised water, chocolate drinks and

something with more oomph headed to the
booths with beer and wine instead.

Following a tour of the exhibition, the
hoteliers were escorted to the Cocktail
Lounge where they sampled winning wines
while sharing information in a relaxed
atmosphere. The exhibitors, on the other
hand, were able to glean potential business
opportunities during the session.
Apart from the exciting things to try, see and
touch, visitors had the opportunity to take
home educational information from a series
of talks held throughout the day.
Proving popular among seminar-goers was
the Coffee Workshop and Demo by Berjaya
University College of Hospitality. Guest
speaker SK Leng likened coffee to having
a party in a cup, stating that different types
of coffee has different personalities and it
takes time to sample them all to find the
right one for you. The demo also saw two
baristas from Degayo Coffee giving the
audience some hassle-free tips on how to
make good coffee.
The Chocolate Appreciation session was
also a unique session, where Schoko shared
stories behind the production of chocolate
goods. It allowed the audience to see the
thought and efforts to turn cocoa beans into
one of the world’s favourite comfort food.
Other talks included a Healthy Food Talk by
Nutrifood, a Live Pastry Show by AB Mauri
Malaysia Sdn Bhd and the Scroll Technology,
Vulkan Lokring and Sprial System by Lan
Hoe Enterprise (1979) Sdn Bhd.
To round up Day 2, MIFB 2014 awarded
innovative exhibitors for Best Booth Design
and Best Country Pavilion. F&B Equipment
won the Gold award for its beautifullydesigned booth while Epson and Mokate
took home the Silver and Bronze awards
respectively. Meanwhile, Greece pocketed
the Best Country Pavilion while Taiwan
and Singapore won the Silver and Bronze
medals.
The Network Cocktail, a perennial favourite,
gave exhibitors and guests the chance to
wind down before ending a fruitful day of
doing business.

Chew on this
opportunity!
What happens when you combine the
traditional Belgian waffle with a delightfully
chewy texture? You get Qaffles! (Q sounds
like the Chinese slang for “springy”). This
new twist on waffles comes in eight flavours
such as honey dew, green tea, chocolate,
and banana.
“The Qaffle kiosk is a portable concept.
We will be adding more savoury flavours
and also serve tea or ice creams with our
snacks. The ingredients used are natural
with no preservatives,” Lai says. Even on its
own, one bite into a warm and chewy waffle
emits a pleasant taste that’s not too sweet
with a natural flavour.

At GBS’s booth, two Taiwanese food R&D
specialists were seen busily experimenting
with new flavours of Qaffles even as the
exhibition was going on. GBS Alliance’s
consultant, Kenny Lai, said that the Taiwanbased Qaffle’s first stall will be based
in Malaysia, with plans to expand into
Southeast Asia.

Ginger Tea Sizzles
Tastebuds
The ginger tea drink and samples at the
Hung Kee Ginger Teashop proved to be a hot
stop for visitors at MIFB 2014. “Our ginger
drink is unique because all the ingredients
are in their natural form so when you steep
the tea in hot water, you can still see the
red dates, ginger and longan in their original
form,” said Ariel Seah, sales assistant and
representative.
For a long and
healthy life
Sakura honey
Too much of wining and dining has resulted
in a rise of ill health among many modernites.
As a result, many are now beginning to turn
back to natural and organic food sources.
This is what brought Taiwan Lea Young Bio
to MIFB 2014 to introduce some of their
best-selling natural products.
If you had missed out sighting lovely sakura
blossoms in Japan every year, fear not, as
you can still savour the flower’s goodness
in the form of Sakura Honey the whole year
round. Not only that, you will gain good
health as it is high in protein (vegetarians,
take note).
“The bamboo ginger used is also one of
the best quality types of ginger variant,”
she adds. The same natural concept is
seen in its Coralline drink with Sea Bird’s
Nest which is high in calcium and has the
ability to beautify skin. Already available in
various Malaysian malls, Hung Kee’s teas
are immensely popular all over Taiwan.
Linne International has been specialising
in honey products for the past 10 years,
producing variants such as Lemon Tree
Honey and Wild Honey. Their other products
include honey vinegar, handmade royal
jelly soap, bee pollen products and Royal
Jelly capsules. Linne’s representative Chen
says that they have met a few potential
distributors at MIFB 2014 and look forward
to spreading their honey’s healthy goodness
throughout Southeast Asia.

of their star products is their Ashitaba range.
Ashitaba is a plant traditionally famous in
Hachijo, Japan where residents consuming
it tend to lead longer and healthier lives.
“When we eat lots of meat and fast food, the

Dripping to good
health
Drip bag coffee is a new way to enjoy not just
any coffee, but Chlorogenic Acid Boutique
Coffee. Chlorogenic Acid (CGA) is a natural
compound found in raw green coffee beans,
the most abundant natural plant source
of CGA. It can reduce sugar spikes after
meals, reduce the risk of type II diabetes
and liver damage as well as protect against
Alzheimer’s disease.
“We believe that drinking coffee properly
can help preserve your health,” says Sophie
Wang, business development manager of
Persnam. Each coffee bag is attached to a
paper perch which sits on the rims of your
coffee cup so that you can pour hot water
into the bag, and enjoy it after the coffee
has dripped through. The taste of the coffee
is mellow with a sweet hint of aftertaste.
Drinking good quality coffee can also help
in weight reduction, adds Wang.

exported globally in a can. Specialising
in canned peaches, apricots, and fruit
cocktails, Pavlides is one of the largest
producers of canned fruits in Greece and
is now on a blitz to capture the Southeast
Asian market through a special programme.
“It’s good to come to MIFB. My advice is not
to come only one time but a few times so
that you can build your relationships and
people can gain confidence in you. Next
year, we will be here again so that we can
work closely with our customers,” Fragides
says optimistically.

The company also brought in other raw foods
from Yunnan, namely wild mushrooms,
wild black fungus and blueberries. “Our
blueberries have a lot of potential in
Malaysia. They are fresh and delicious, and
can be sold at a more competitive price
than blueberries from US due to the shorter
distance between Yunnan and Malaysia,”
she states.

Pure & Halal
Fancy having purple-black glutinous maize
for dessert? Although it may not look as
appetising as its golden cousin, the purpleblack glutinous maize is actually higher in
nutritional value, including amino acids
and trace elements, says Yuan Mei, the
president of Yunan Yi Jin Yuan Imp. & Exp.
TradeCO., LTD.
“This maize is planted using natural methods
and fertilisers. It is actually sold in China as a
premium food product,” she said.
Tapping into the growing global Halal market
is Xiangjuzhai Huiyuan Halal Beverage Co.,
Ltd which specialises in Halal fruit juice,
juice and puree concentrates, mooncakes
and biscuits.
All their fruit juice and puree are 100%
pure and free from additives, colourings
and preservatives. The company utilises
the German vacuum degassing technology
which removes oxygen from their fruit juice
products to a large extent, thus preserving
their vitamins, fresh colours and flavours.
Poetry Gladies’ food story is like a fairy tale,
much befitting her name (pronounced as
‘putri’, or princess in Bahasa Indonesia).

her brownies to customers eight months

Taste Enhancer
Love in every bite
Just one bite into D2’s chocolate cassava
flakes might be enough to convince you to
grab a few boxes as gifts. The flakes are the
loving results of owner and founder Chandra
Nur’s experiments with new varieties. At
the moment, Chandra already owns over 50
flavours of cookies. Her Nastar (Indonesian
pineapple cookies) is also a hit.
If you had stayed away from garlic due to
its strong odour and taste, now is the time
to give this health food a second chance.
The black garlic, a naturally fermented food
produced from specially selected fresh
white garlic kept in fermentation rooms with
high temperature and moisture for 60 to 90
days, not only has a significantly reduced
garlic taste but also has a sweet, sourish
taste and chewy texture, much like a soft
dried fruit.
A World of
Flavours
In today’s world where at least half of foods
we eat on a daily basis are processed food,
food additives and flavourings have become
indispensable. And Shanghai Jianyin Food
Science & Technology have basically every
type of additive and flavouring under the
sun.
Their additives and flavouring are used in
dairy products, juices, bubble teas, soft
drinks, jellies, confectionary, ice-cream,
snacks and other food stuff. “We are a top
food and beverage flavouring company in
China, with customers like Coca-Cola and
Wahaha,” says international trade manager
Stephen Wei.

MILLED TO PERFECTION
Jagdish Rice Mill certainly is a multi-grain
expert. Established 23 years ago, the
leading grain supplier has evolved from
humble beginnings to a prominent name in
the industry.
21 June 2014 | Saturday
From rice to wheat, Jagdish has opted for
a more environmental friendly and ultra
modern ‘Freon’ gas technology for storing
and refrigerating its produce in order to
meet clients’ needs round the year.
According to its manager Anand Thakkar,
the company is famed for its expertise in
producing different varieties of non-basmati
rice such as Jeerasar, Lachkari, Masuri and
Kamod for the past two decades.
“We also supply Samba wheat – a sugarfree and Low Glycemic Index grain which
is one of the healthiest grains found in the
cereal family,” he continues. “

RUBY-RED GOODNESS
Mumbai-based INI Farm’s signature
product is one of nature’s best superfood
– pomegranates - famed for its immuneboosting, anti-ageing and cancer-inhibiting
properties. Marketed under the brand
Kimaye, which means ‘divine’ in Sanskrit,
the farm recorded an estimated production
of 10,000 million tons of Bhagwa
pomegranates in 2014.
“Unlike other pomegranate varieties, the
Bhagwa variant comes with a saffronhued appearance, dark red arils and edible
seeds,” says Kalpesh Khivasara, general
manager of INI Farms who manages a
total space of 800-acre plantations. “Our
homegrown bananas are also sweeter.”
As one of the finest pomegranate species,
about 80% of INI Farm’s handpicked fresh
pomegranate have made its way to Europe,
its largest export market every year. The
farm has also received multiple international
certifications such as Global GAP, HACCP
and FSSC 22000.

SOLID SPUDS
There’s reason why B.B. Foods Pvt. Ltd is one of the fastest growing potato processing
company in India. Its signature frozen and pre-fried French fries sold under ‘BB Fries’ label
are made from premium innovated Santana Cannabaic variant.
The first-time exhibitor aims to make the starchy finger food available for Malaysian
consumers through local distributors or agents. “We want to achieve better brand exposure
through this fair and hopefully, soon our products will get into retail giants like Tesco, Cold
Storage and Giant,” said Sunil K. Gupta, director of the company based in Uttar Pradesh.
Sunil explains that its innovated Santana Cannabaic potatoes have a firm and solid flesh
equivalent to imported variants from Belgium and Europe. The product has gained huge
popularity among Middle Eastern countries, Mauritius, Australia, Nepal and Pakistan in the
last two years.
“Using state-of-the-art potato processing technology from Netherlands, we hope to be able to
expand our distribution channel to various commercial or personal food joints, hypermarket
and local retail-chains,” he adds.

OFFERING THE BEST OF INDIA
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA)
brought a touch of India to MIFB 2014 by showcasing some of India’s best producers and
manufacturers. Visitors and buyers were treated to a visual feast of colours, tastes and
scents as they indulged their inner foodie and gained valuable food knowledge from Indian
exhibitors.
Established by the Government of India under the Agricultural and Processed Food Products
Export Development Authority, APEDA brought forth eight key industry players who were
seeking distributors or agents for their products. More established exhibitors were also
present to increase brand awareness.
Ramesh K. Boyal, Director of APEDA says that food products such as Briyani rice, potatoes,
fresh fruits, cereals and frozen peas are the gastronomic hallmarks of India that are introduced
in the fair this year.
The pavilion featured some of India’s manufacturing darlings such as B.B. Foods, INI Farms
and Jagdish Rice Mill. To grab visitor’s attention, the booths were brightened up with mangohued columns and aromatic Briyani dish specially cooked for the curious crowd. APEDA’s
pavilion attracted many enquiries from various potential buyers, mostly those looking for
good quality raw materials at competitive prices.

LET’S GET CORNY!
BECOMING A HOUSEHOLD NAME
For a company who started with seasonings,
its gamble to produce corn snacks paid off
in a big way when it managed to attract
buyers from China, Philippines, Singapore,
Uganda, Mauritius and New Zealand.
Bangladesh’s Pran label is such a big player
in the Malaysian food industry that it even
has its own vehicle fleet and distributor
network in every state in peninsular
Malaysia to supply its products to major
hypermarkets and supermarkets.
According to Haliza Industries Sdn Bhd’s
Ammar Hafiz Abd Hamid, their corn snacks
are free of MSG, artificial flavours and
preservatives. Its seasoning is derived
from natural products while its processing
method allows the snacks to have a longer
shelf life. Their Witties corn snacks come
in six flavours – tomato, chicken, BBQ,
cheese, curry and prawn.
AMAZING ROSELLE
Zinon’s instant noodles that contains over
25 spices in its curry paste was a big hit
among MIFB visitors. All one needs to do
is to bring water to boil, add soup paste,
chicken stock, non-dairy creamer, and
noodles and voila!
This year, Al Faiz Industries Sdn Bhd is focused
on promoting its pure roselle juice and roselle
toothpaste. Its juice comes in a ready-to-drink
bottle, without added preservatives or artificial
flavourings.
COCOA DRINKS WITH
A DIFFERENCE
Meanwhile, its toothpaste has a pinkish
hue (natural colour of the roselle) and has
additional advantages of whitening and
anti-bacterial besides keeping teeth clean.
Al Faiz is also open to OEM opportunities.
Its marketing manager Mohd Atiff Redza
says the recipe actually originated from a
hawker who has been selling white curry
noodles in Penang for decades. After getting
her involved, the company fine-tuned its
operations to recreate her delicious recipe
in the form of instant noodles. The company
hopes to produce cup noodles next.
COOL AMBITIONS

Chocolate Drink was conceptualised after
indepth research and thought from its
founder Mohd Zamri Idris, who felt that the
chocolate malt drinks in Malaysia are not a
healthy choice.
Banking on its repertoire of over 20
frozen foodstuff, Iwani Frozen Food is
branching out into setting up franchise
businesses for local clients. It has several
existing steamboat and BBQ outlets, and
restaurants. With that experience in hand,
Iwani has come up a turnkey solution for its

digestion and lowering cholesterol. Hence
his signature chocolate drink was born. The

SUN BAKER’S SMART OVENS
Tired of old dials and knobs? Italian-made Piron Colombo ovens are equipped with a userfriendly touchscreen to help chefs operate easily in the kitchen. The oven can be synced
to the chef’s mobile phone via an app on Bluetooth. Chefs can even program recipes and
‘communicate’ with the oven.
Internally, the oven has a full steamer and a combi steam system while its rack can fit two
different trays. More importantly, it is fitted with a two-fan Sator system where water is
injected into the first fan and allowed to evaporate through the second.
The result is a high quality steam. Simply said, for the same amount of water used in a regular
oven, one gets more steam. Such steam allows chefs to retain moisture in foods, yet get a
crispy outer layer when it is finished cooking.
Aside from its turbo cooling function and automated door, the oven has an automatic detergent
management system with four washing levels. In Malaysia, Piron ovens are distributed by
Sun Baker Food Machinery Sdn Bhd.
The drink comes in powder form and
dissolves easily in cold water. It is currently
being sold online via its own branding.
Mohd Zamri says the company is open to
OEM opportunities from overseas.

Franchise Opportunity:
Creating a Magical Taste with Amazy
By PT MagFood Amazy Internasional
People in Malaysia love crispy chicken and
most are concerned with the Halal status
of food, says Yanty Melianty, founder and
owner of PT MagFood Amazy Internasional.
“That’s why there’s a huge opportunity for
Amazy, an Indonesian family restaurant
chain with a menu focused on serving Halal
‘crispy-style’ food, including friend chicken
and chicken crisps,” she said.
Founded in Indonesia 13 years ago, the
company has 136 outlets in Indonesia to
date. “The brand is targeted at teenagers
and young family with kids. We aim to
position ourselves as a smart and fun brand
that serves healthy and tasty food.”
Melianty is currently actively expanding their business to Malaysia and offers four investment
options for franchisees – qiosk, food court, mini restaurant and restaurant – each with a
different initial investment cost. The first Amazy restaurant in Malaysia will be set up in Salak
South next September.
Most of us grow up with coffee. But do you know how to choose your coffee when faced
with a myriad of choices at the supermarket? Are you like most people, who buy what
their friends or family do, without asking whether the coffee is suitable for them?
He noted that there were two types of coffee beans – Arabica and Robusta. “Robusta
is usually grown at low, flat lands, like Vietnam and Indonesia. It grows fast and is
harvested twice a year. On the other hand, Arabica is grown high in the mountains.
Arabica gives more flavour and aroma and has 50-60% less caffeine than Robusta.”
Kiekens also showed a list of beverages with their caffeine content. To the audience’s
surprise, beverages like coke and energy drinks contain much more caffeine than the
typical espresso, which is created by forcing very hot water under high pressure through
finely ground, compacted coffee. Because of this, the water has less time to absorb the
caffeine from the ground coffee, he explained.
He stressed that one should look at the label to discover how much Arabica and
Robusta content a coffee brand has before making a purchase. “Different coffee beans
complement each other and bring out the best flavour and taste. That’s why we have
coffee blends,” he said.
By Bandung Province
Many people visit Bandung, the capital of
West Java province, to pamper their taste
buds. But this year in MIFB, one can taste
the best of Bandung food without having to
travel all the way there.
Andrian Jandra, owner of Mr. Mpek which
supplies frozen fishcake; and Poetry
Gladies, owner of Dapur Gladies who offer
homemade muffins with over 45 toppings,
gave a talk together on Bandung delicacies
showcased in MIFB 2014.
According to them, out of a total of 125
Halal food producers in Bandung, only
eight were selected to showcase their
foods in MIFB 2014 based on their taste
and texture, sales, packaging design and
other criteria. The products showcased
included empek-empek (Palembang
fish cake), brownies, fried mushrooms,
piakabayan, durian pancake, rendang
meat, beef sausage and rojak sauce.

According to Ronny Kiekens, managing director of Puro Coffee Malaysia Sdn Bhd, one
should know what he/she is looking for when buying coffee. “What do you want to
taste and feel? Do you want the coffee to keep you awake for a long day of work, or do
you want a pleasurable taste and feeling that is not too overpowering?” he asked the
audience.

“We deal with coconut products such as snacks and coconut chunks.
I have been participating in MIFB since I was in another company, and
now that I’m with Yagus, I still support MIFB because they have given
me a lot of feedback on what exporters are looking for. This year, we are
pleasantly surprised that there are a lot of visitors from new countries.
Over the last 3 days, we are close to closing international deals of up to
5 containers to US, Japan, Taiwan and China. If things go through, we
plan to take an even larger booth next year.“

“We are here for the first time and our response has been very good
for our company. We came to expand our business, as we are already
10 years in the market. Tajria is a franchisor for packed paste such as
rendang and assam pedas. So far, we have not started exporting but we
met some potential partners from China, Brunei, Singapore and Middle
East. We did cooking demonstrations and everyone who tried our food
liked them. We already have bookings from Singapore and Middle East!”

“This is our first visit to MIFB and Malaysia. We are exporters of dried
vegetables and peanut butter and came here to get more local and
international buyers such as from Italy and Europe. We have had quite a
number of visitors in the last two days and are satisfied with the outcome
although the expo is not very big compared to others we have attended.”
Sarute Nakaratanakorn

“Our company produces specialised authentic Thai sauces and this
is our third time at MIFB. We had good experience in the last two
years; in our first year, we found a local distributor and last year
we managed to increase our distribution channel, so this year we
hope to increase consumer awareness. We created a special photo
frame where people can snap photos, hashtag uniqlythai and post on
instagram to win prizes – quite a number of people did that.”

“We have a distributor in Malaysia but decided to come personally to
help promote our high quality ginger products because we have new
products this year, such as the black fungus and ginger drink. We also
want to get to know the market better and see if there’s any way we
can support our distributor. The 700 boxes we brought were sold out
by the second day and we are very happy with the overall response!”
Samwon Mechatronics Inc
“Our products are exported all over the world and this is the first time
we are participating in Malaysia. Response has been very hot, way
exceeding our expectations. We are looking for distributors all over the
world and we had over 50 potential ones from Malaysia, Indonesia,
Thailand, Taiwan, Philippines and Indonesia. We received bookings from
10 of our machines already during this MIFB alone!”

“We are looking for sour candy of a specific brand and found many
China and local producers of this candy here. We also enjoyed a lot
of other dishes such as steak and coffee. We found MIFB through the
social media and love the environment here. There’s a lot of business
going on and also people who simply enjoy food, so MIFB is a good
one-stop-centre for food lovers.”

“My husband and I are regular visitors of MIFB for the last ten years!
We keep coming back year after year because there are lots of lovely
foodstuff to buy, such as sesame oil, noodles and snacks. We always
end up spending at least half a day at MIFB because there is so much
to see and buy. The cooking demonstrations are also very fun – there
is so much variety from different countries.”

“My company conducts Halal business and this is my second visit to
MIFB. This year, we found some new opportunities, such as coffee, tea
and fruit drinks producers who want to expand their range. We find that
many companies are interested in our products, such as Taiwan and
Japan. I always recommend this fair to my friends as a place to try new
food, drinks and tastes.”

“We are a company dealing with migration. Personally, I love cooking
and checking out ingredients and new equipment, so I love this fair
because there are so many interesting things to see. I’m taking back a
lot of brochures for my friends who might be interested in some of the
opportunities we saw here, such as the Italian multi-purpose oven. It’s
just amazing!”

“I’ve been here a few times in the previous years. I’m here this year
to see whether there are any new things in the market, mainly snacks
such as organic snacks. Previously my company has a Taiwanese
partner, and I hope to find some cereal products here this year. ”

“I heard about MIFB from the internet but found it too late to spend
much time here. I’m in the cupcakes business and I’m looking for more
opportunities such as bakeries to market my products. Generally, I
feel it’s a good place to look for supplies from any part of the world
because everything can be found at one place, which saves me time
from searching all over the place.”
