Tuesday, 24 FEB 7.30 a.m. Clergy & Leaders Holy Communion 1. We should fast SENSIBLY. Don’t feel that you must fast many days to be effective. Many biblical fasts were “until evening” (Judg 20:16, 2 Sam 3:35, Acts 10:30). Wednesday, 25 FEB 9.00 a.m. Morning Prayer 12.45 p.m. Holy Communion @ Prayer Hall A&B Revd Soon Soo Kee 5.15 p.m. Evening Prayer 2. We should fast SECRETLY. Jesus cautioned His disciples never to boast about our times of fasting but rather to keep our times of fasting as a personal commitment (Mt 6:16-18). 3. We should fast SENSITIVELY. When Israel fasted before a crucial battle, the Bible says they “inquired to the Lord” (Judg 20:26-28). When we fast, we should make special time to hear God speak. Thursday, 26 FEB 9.30 a.m. Holy Communion @ Chapel for All Peoples Revd Timothy Chow 4. We should fast SYSTEMATICALLY. When Jesus taught His disciples about fasting, he began with the words “when you fast” (Mt 6:16). He was suggesting that believers should have their regular times of fasting, whether one day or a portion of a day each week. Friday, 27 FEB 9.00 a.m. Morning Prayer 10.30 a.m. Mandarin Senior Citizens’ Meeting @ CNS 5. We should fast SACRIFICIALLY. If we normally do not eat breakfast, it is not really a sacrifice to miss breakfast. A true fast must be a sacrifice. Saturday, 28 FEB 9.00 a.m. Morning Prayer 2.00 p.m. LYnC Youth Ministry @North Transept Hall Relationship with Parents 2.00 p.m. Young Adults’ Ministry @ Prayer Hall A & B Isaiah 2: The Builder: The City of Jewels 2.00 p.m. 2.30 p.m. 6. We should fast SPECIFICALLY. In Is 58:6, God said to Israel, “Is not this the fast that I choose?” We must ask God to direct us in the focus of our fasting. 7. We should fast SUPERNATURALLY. The very nature of fasting requires dependence on God’s supernatural power to see us through. The Bible says that when the early church fasted before sending out workers, “the Holy Spirit spoke” (Acts 13:2-3). We need God’s Spirit as we fast. C3 (CITY Children Club) @ Cathedral New Sanctuary (no meetings on 4th & 5th Sat) From the book “Love On Its Knees” by Dick Eastman. NO Shalomkids Ministry (For children with autism) @ Prayer Hall C “Yet even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart, with FASTING, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster. Joel 2:12-13 5.00 p.m. Saturday Contemporary Service @ Cathedral New Sanctuary LENTEN FAST Mr Alvin Toh 5 “Notes for 1st session will be given only to those who have pre-registered. For those who have pre-registered but are unable to come for the course, kindly inform CE administrator to cut down on paper wastage.” prayer highlights Before You Say, “I Do.” (Marriage Prep Course) DIOCESE OF SINGAPORE Discipleship, Holiness & Revival 20/3 (Fri, 7.30pm-9.30pm); 21/3 (Sat, 9.30am- 1pm @ PHA-C) Bishop Hwa Yung (Bishop Emeritus of the Methodist Church in Malaysia) 28/2 – 25/4 (9 Sat, 2pm – 4pm @ ST Hall) Retreat 25/4, (Sat, 9:30am – 1:30pm) Revd Michael Lim & Mrs. Judy Lim and Pastor David Ng & Mrs Ng Siow Ing The rate of divorce and marital breakdown among those married less than 5 years is increasing sharply. The couple’s pledge to stay together ‘till death do us part’ cannot be taken for granted. What is essential in building strong marriages and relationships that last? The course will look at critical and practical issues in a marriage relationship. Topics include right and wrong reasons for marriage, building your marriage on the foundation of respect, faithfulness, commitment and love, the essential 3 A’s in a healthy relationship, effective communication & conflict resolution, relationship with in-laws, financial issues, roles and responsibilities and growing in oneness. The Gospel is the result of the work of the Holy Spirit in revival on the one hand, and the prayers, holy lives and faithfulness of God’s people on the other. The seminar will focus on two movements in Church history and the lessons we can learn from them today on discipleship, holiness and revival. • The Moravian community which sent out a total of 2,158 missionaries in its first 150 years. American missiologist, A. T. Pierson, said this of the Moravians: “Holy living, ceaseless praying and cheerful giving constitute their conception of discipleship…” The course is compulsory for those who want to marry in the Cathedral. • Early Methodism, under John Wesley, grew to almost 5% of England’s population in its first 100 years. Roy Hattersley, a former Deputy Labour Party leader in Britain, said Methodism “encouraged the working poor to be ambitious, industrious and respectable…” Christian Response to Gambling and Sex 3/3 & 10/3 (2 Tues, 7.30pm – 9.30pm @ PH A-C) Mr. Liew Heng San (Prior to Retirement, Mr. Liew was Former CEO of the CPF Board, Perm Sec (Law), MD EDB and CE of LTA.) Is it okay for a Christian to go to the casino or to gamble? What is wrong with pre-marital, extra-marital or deviant sex? The talks look at the Christian response to: “Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me…’” (Matt 16: 24). During this period of Lent, let us reflect together on what it means for each one of us to be distinctive in mindset, values, conduct and life in a world that is in need of Christ. • Gambling (3/3) – What the Bible says about the Grip of Attraction, the Grind of Addiction, and the Grace from Atonement. It will also look at how a gambler can be ‘rescued’ physically and spiritually and how we can protect ourselves, our family, church and community from the dangers of gambling. 31/3 (Tues) – The EXAMPLE of Jesus in Overcoming a World of Raw Power and Self-Interest – Bishop Rennis Ponniah • Sexual Issues (10/3) – Why do professionals call pornography the visual crack cocaine, and what exactly are those addicted chasing after? The talk will also look at questions like, can Christians be misled, are penguins gay, and are the HPB Sexuality FAQs medical, moral or mad? It will teach how we can turn the tide from porn to purity and the importance of disciplining the minds of our children. 1/4 (Wed) – The EFFICACY of Jesus in a Compulsive World of Efficiencies and Effectiveness – Revd Edmund Chan cont’d on page 7 6 • Aruba (Caribbean) The evangelical presence in Aruba has grown and we pray for unity among believers. The greatest threat to this unity is the importation of alien theology, church culture and preaching style common among the televangelists and prosperity preachers seen on foreign Christian TV. Praise God for increased fellowship and cooperation among pastors, enabling evangelicals to present a united front and impact society on issues such as homosexual marriage legislation, teen drug addiction and the high rate of illegitimate births (about 50%). • Praiseland Child Care & Learning Centre Supervisor: Mrs Anne Chan • Clergy Retreat, 10-13 Mar (Tue-Fri) Pray for all the Clergy at this retreat to be refreshed and renewed in their walk with and service to the Lord. Theme: A Pastor and His Personal Holiness Speaker: Dr Rod Wilson (President of Regent College, Vancouver) There are three Christian radio stations in Aruba. Thank God for them and also for the gospel that is proclaimed on programmes that appear on secular radio and TV. Pray for the enduring fruitfulness of these ministries. (Source: Operation World, 21st Century Edition, pp. 116-7) • One Choice Encounter, 27-30 May (Wed-Sat) One Choice Encounter is a guided Retreat for youths and young adults of the Diocese to set aside time and space in their hearts to hear Him, to be touched by Him, and to follow Him. The programme is designed to give time for reflection, interaction and action. We pray for many to sign up (by 31 Mar) and be blessed. Venue: Speakers: Cathedral Lenten Devotions The Way of the Cross 31/3 (Tues) & 1/4 (Wed), 7.30pm – 9.30pm @ the Nave Bishop Rennis Ponniah & Revd Edmund Chan WORLD • Yishun Christian Church Vicar: Revd William Chee Priests: Revd King Chiew Kwang (Hon), Revd Israel Selvam, Revd Ng Hwee Leong PW/PA: Ms Lucy Balandran, Ms Lissy Arulselvi, Ms Tan Yen Yee, Mr Ang Chee Yong SINGAPORE • Budget 2015, Tomorrow (23 Feb) The Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam will deliver this year’s Budget Statement and we pray for God’s hand to direct eventual result in ways of justice and peace for our nation and glory to Christ. Majodi Centre, Johor Bahru Bp Ken Clarke & Team including Bp Rennis Ponniah, Ven Wong Tak Meng, Revd Yee Ching Wah, Revd Daniel Wee & Mr Jason Wong. • Jubilee Day of Prayer, 05 Jul (Sun) As Singapore celebrates SG50, may all believers in Christ seek and pray for God’s grace and favour for Kingdom’s values to come upon our families, schools & government (Matthew 6:10). ST ANDREW’S CATHEDRAL • Church Prayer Meeting this Friday (27 Feb) We thank God for faithful members who gather once a month to pray as the Church that God has placed us together. This coming Friday, we pray for the faithful ones to continue to come and for those who have yet to attend – to find it a ‘duty and joy’ to come before the throne of grace. PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SICK Patrick Boyd, Chia Hearn Jiang, Terence Choo. Amy Dang, Annie Dang, Khor Seow Hong, Marjorie Lau, Nancy Li, William Ng, Alvin Oh, Madeline Quah, Sylvia Wong and Lily Yeo. • City Community Services, Fundraising Dinner, 27 May (Wed) Let us pray for good response towards this fundraising dinner that is intended to help the poor and needy.
