Cold War Alliance Systems
Using an atlas or maps from your history textbook, code the respective alliance systems on the
world map provided.
1. North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)—Green dots
Members included the United States, Canada, Iceland, United Kingdom, Portugal, Spain,
France (withdrew in 1966 from military aspects to pursue an independent but coordinated
military position with NATO), Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, West Germany, Denmark,
Norway, Italy, Greece, and Turkey.
2. Warsaw Pact—Red dots
Members included the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Poland, East Germany, Hungary,
Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, and Romania. Albania withdrew in 1968 after the Sino–Soviet split
and Yugoslavia, though Communist, remained independent and never joined. (This alliance
ceased to exist when the Cold War ended.)
3. Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO)—Blue dots
Members included the United States, United Kingdom, France, Pakistan (withdrew in 1972),
Philippines, Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand.
4. Central Treaty Organization (CENTO)—Yellow dots
Members include the United States, United Kingdom, Pakistan, and Turkey (Iraq withdrew in
1958).
5. Australia, New Zealand, United States Security Treaty (ANZUS)—Purple dots
Members included Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.
6. U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM)—Orange dots
This was established by President Ronald Reagan in 1983 to provide rapid air, naval, and
ground support to nineteen nations in the Persian Gulf, southwestern Asia, and the horn of
Africa region, which may face threats or themselves threaten U.S. interests in the area.
Members include the United States, Egypt, Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti, Jordan, Saudi
Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Oman, and Yemen. Headquarters is in Florida, but a command headquarters is located on a ship based in Bahrain.
