March 1, 2015 - First Presbyterian Church of Ocala, FL
Welcome to First Presbyterian Church Of Ocala March 1, 2015 This Morning’s Sermon Prayer “101” 511 S.E. Third Street, Ocala, FL 34471 The Reverend Dr. Raymond Guterman, Pastor The Reverend Darren Bess, Associate Pastor The Rev. Dr. Ray C. Ruark, Jr., Pastor Emeritus Phone: (352) 629-7561 Fax: (352) 629-8066 www.fpcocala.org FAITHFULLY SERVING JESUS CHRIST IN MARION COUNTY AND THE WORLD SINCE 1857 AND STILL GROWING! TRADITIONAL WORSHIP THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT March 1, 2015 8:15a.m. & 11:00 a.m. We Gather with Others in God’s House The Welcome and Announcements The Ritual of Friendship (Thank you, if able, for standing and greeting your neighbors in worship today with the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ.) We Prepare Our Hearts and Minds for Worship The Chiming of the Hour The Prelude Prelude on: What Wondrous Love Is This Dale Wood To meditate upon today during the prelude…… As our Savior Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to say: “Our Father. . . .” So runs the old liturgical formula, stressing the Pater Noster (The Lord’s Prayer) as a command and its use as a daring, trembling, holy boldness. At one level, this is entirely appropriate. At another level, however, it fails to catch the most remarkable thing about the Lord’s Prayer — and so fails to grasp the truly distinctive feature in Christian prayer that this prayer points us to. For the Lord’s Prayer is not so much a command as an invitation: an invitation to share in the prayer-life of Jesus himself. - N. T. Wright The Introit Awake, Arise! Hughes Huffman, Jr. The Call to Worship (Unison) Psalm 100 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name. For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations. We Give Praise and Adoration to God *The Hymn of Praise Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah 281 *The Re-Affirmation of Faith (Unison) Philippians 2:6-11 Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. *If able, please stand *The Gloria Patri #579 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. (Children sitting with their parents in the 11 O’clock service may now join Ms. Jacque Johnson for children’s church.) We Seek and Share God’s Forgiveness The Call to Confession The Prayer of Confession (Unison) Psalm 51:1-13 Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your unfailing love; according to Your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight; so You are right in Your verdict and justified when You judge. Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Yet You desired faithfulness even in the womb; You taught me wisdom in that secret place. Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, so that sinners will turn back to You. Amen. (A time for silent prayer and confession.) The Assurance of Pardon We Give God His Tithes and our Offerings The Call to Offering The Offertory Hymn-Setting: Draw Us in the Spirit’s Tether *The Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Norman Slade #592 We Hear God’s Word Proclaimed The Old Testament Scripture Daniel 6:10 (O. T. Page 827) The New Testament Scripture Matthew 6:9-14 (N. T. Page 8) This is the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God The Sermon Prayer “101” Pastor Darren Bess We Celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion The Hymn of Preparation ( 8:15) Let Us Break Bread Together #513 The Anthem (11:00 ) How Beautiful Twila Paris, arr. Benjamin Harlan How beautiful the hands that served the wind and the bread and the sons of the earth. How beautiful the feet that walked the long dusty roads and the hill to the cross. How beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful is the body of Christ. How beautiful the heart that bled, that took all my sin and bore it instead. How beautiful the tender eyes that chose to forgive and never despise. How beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful is the body of Christ. See from His head, His hands, His feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown? How beautiful the feet that bring the sound of good news and the love of the King. How beautiful the hands that serve the wind and the bread and the sons of the earth. How beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful is the body of Christ. The Invitation to the Lord’s Table The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is truly right and our greatest joy… Therefore we praise You, joining our voices with choirs of angels and with the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of Your name: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. You are holy, O God of majesty… Accept this, our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving as a living and holy offering of ourselves, that our lives may proclaim the One crucified and risen. Christ has died. Christ has risen. Christ will come again. Gracious God, pour out Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these Your gifts of bread and wine, and that the bread we break and the cup we bless may be the communion of the body and blood of Christ. By Your Spirit unite us with the living Christ and with all who are baptized in His name, that we may be one in ministry in every place. As this bread is Christ’s body for us, send us out to be the Body of Christ in the world. Amen. The Sharing of the Lord’s Supper The Lord’s Prayer We Depart to Live and Love as Christian Disciples *The Hymn of Dedication What a Friend We Have in Jesus *The Charge and Benediction *The Congregational Response (8:15) Three-fold Amen *The Choral Response (11:00) The Hand of God Shall Hold You *The Postlude Prelude & Fugue in E Minor #403 #585 Marty Haugen Johann Sebastian Bach The flowers in the Sanctuary today are given to the glory of God.
