You are not the
cold crystals
of forgotten light
the distant
ache of
extinguished brightness
no
you are the hand strewn
promise
of Abraham’s children
brilliant creations
flung
across night’s dark landscape.
The wise yet trace your courses.
Welcome to Rideau Park United Church. Please note: Audio loops are available from the ushers. Prayer

Prayer of Confession (unison)
O God of life, in all its moments: We come to worship as stragglers and strugglers,
followers of Jesus who sometimes wonder why we are here. The hymns of Lent call us to
repent, but we question a community of faith built on guilt. We confess, O God, that
sometimes we are too comfortable in traditions and theology that are not relevant. Heal
our complacency, we pray, and make us bold to live our faith anew. Amen.
(a time of silent reflection)

Please keep in mind worshippers who have limited mobility, especially with this winter
weather. Parking in the parking spots beside Cunningham makes it easier for them to come to
church, so if you don’t have the need, please use a parking spot on the Beecroft side or in the back
parking lot off Woodcrest. Thank you.

Followers Feast and Fellowship: On Wednesday nights in Lent , at 6:00 p.m. you are invited to come
and share a potluck meal in our Parlour. After dinner, we will stay at the dinner table, and have an
informal time of discussion based on a passage of Scripture. We used this format for midweek
services in the summer and it was a great experience. All are welcome to join in.
Lenten Book Study: This year we are studying the book, “The Wisdom Jesus” , written by Rev. Dr.
Cynthia Bourgeault. Dr. Bourgeault is a modern day mystic, Episcopal priest, writer, and
internationally known retreat leader. Cynthia Bourgeault is a masterful guide to Jesus’ vision and to
the traditional contemplative practices you can use to experience the heart of his teachings for
yourself. Although we began the study on February 21, we would love to have you join us next week.
Our tradition is to have a potluck breakfast at 9:00 a.m. followed by discussion. If you would like to
join us, please contact either Doreen Hamilton or Chris Inrig. The cost for the book is approximately
$16.00.
Poetry and Prayer: During Lent, our bulletin covers include a poem or prayer in preparation for
worship. Two of the poets are: Carol Grace Scott of Emmanuel United Church in Ottawa, whose
books are available on the Sunday School counter for $15.00, of which half of the proceeds go to the
Mission and Service Fund; Wendy Tarry of Rideau Park, whose book “With a Whisper “ is available
through Amazon.ca. There is also a copy available to borrow in our RPUC Library.
Attention Students!: Rideau Park is in need of caretaking help for six weeks: May 18 to 30, (9:00
a.m .to 1:00 p.m.), Monday to Friday; July 6 to 18, (9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.), Monday to Friday; and
August 10 to 21 (2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday to Friday). Some flexibility is an option for
discussion. Duties will include light custodial duties, care and maintenance of the grounds, set up/
take down for groups meeting in the church, and other duties as required. A job description is
available upon request. If you wish to apply, please leave your résumé in Debi Brown’s mailbox
outside the office, or email to [email protected]
UCW Easter MEMORIAL LILIES: On Easter Sunday the Sanctuary is filled with fragrant Easter lilies. All
of these lilies are placed there in remembrance of a loved one. Anyone wishing to place an Easter lily
in the Sanctuary for Easter Sunday morning, in memory of a loved one, is asked to call Mary Harris
or Marcia Gosse. After Easter worship members of the UCW and friends deliver all the lilies to over
80 members of our congregation who are on our Pastoral Care list. Cheques should be made payable
to Rideau Park UCW and given to Mary or Marcia. The deadline to order a lily is SUNDAY, March 22.
If you are able to help deliver lilies on Easter Sunday, please call Mabel Bannerman. It would be most
appreciated.
Harmony Club for Seniors (60+) will meet on Wednesday, March 25. From 11:00 a.m. until noon,
when lunch (cost $6.00) will be served by volunteers, there is time for meeting others for
conversation. From 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Rev. Steve Clifton will present on: “A Journey to
Jerusalem. A visual presentation of a pilgrimage to the Holy City”. Please spread the word that
presentations are open to all, without charge or prior notice. For anyone who is not yet a member to
join us for lunch, registration is required by March 18. Please call Marg Nelson. Plan to join us again
on April 29, 2015.
Rideau Park Book Club: Sunday, April 19, 10:45 a.m. The selected book is called “The Unlikely
Pilgrimage of Harold Fry”. It’s in paperback and also available from the Ottawa library, and Elizabeth
has a few copies to lend. Everyone is welcome to come and join us for the discussion.
50+ Exercise Group: Tuesday and Thursday, 9:00-10:00 a.m. Spring has sprung (almost!) and our
“winter-weary” bodies are looking for a workout! Please join us at Rideau Park, in Beecroft Hall, twice
a week during March and April, for stretching, movement and balance exercise. The fee is $40.00 for
the two months. For further information please call Mary Harris at 613-733-0061.
Spring Retreat: You are invited to join in a retreat to Galilee in Arnprior for a time of quiet, reflection
and fellowship. Galilee is a short walk from downtown Arnprior and sits on the shores of the Ottawa
River, near an old growth forest. It`s a wonderful spot to spend some time away from schedules and
routines. Everyone is welcome to come and join in. Our next retreat is scheduled for Friday, May 22
and Saturday May 23. If you would like to know more please contact Steve.
Did you know? The United Church of Canada is considering changes, to be voted on by General
Council’s meeting in August 2015. Some key points: There would be no more Presbyteries or
Conferences, replaced by a Regional Councils. Ministry personnel would be accredited by a
professional College. Mission and Service funds would be used only for mission and ministry in
Canada and overseas; while administrative costs of the denomination would be assessed from
congregations. And that’s just the beginning. If you would like to read the proposed changes, you
can find the report, called United in God’s Work, on the General Council 42 website: http://
www.gc42.ca/comprehensive-review-report. Rideau Park and Ottawa Presbytery will hold meetings
to learn about, and discuss the recommendations. Locations and dates to be announced.

URGENT HELP NEEDED: Following a recent resignation, the Heron Emergency Food Centre (HEFC) is
in immediate need of a treasurer. Here is a short description of what the Treasurer does: The
Treasurer collects the mail, pays the bills, deposits donations in the bank, and issues tax receipts and
thank-you notes. On a monthly basis, he/she reimburses the food buyers, pays our Executive
Coordinator and makes the government remittances. In preparation for our monthly Board meetings,
the Treasurer prepares the monthly reports, including the balance sheet and income statement. On a
yearly basis, the Treasurer files the annual charity return with the Canadian Revenue Agency, files the
annual information update with Industry Canada, submits the T-4 summary for income tax purposes
and coordinates the financial audit.
This would be a good fit for someone retired from the accounting, bookkeeping or banking
professions. Please contact Harold Black – Board member or Owen Ripley – President
([email protected])
Tom Sherwood gives a series of six presentations based on his “Listening to The Echo” research: over
700 statements from young adults across Canada discussing religion, spirituality, God, god and gods,
as part of “Learning in Retirement at Carleton University,” April 22 to May 27. Many young adults
identify as SBNR – Spiritual But Not Religious. Tom brings their voices into the presentations, as they
talk about their religious upbringing (including the United Church), religion in general, environmental
concerns, attitudes toward gender and sexuality issues, and their personal spiritualties. Wednesdays
from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. For further information and to register: http://carleton.ca/linr OR http://
