From Our Rabbi - Rabbi David Siff
Shalom Haverim,
A
pproaching Passover, I always
think about what are the confines of
my current consciousness, and of the
current social discourse. The Zohar
says that when we were enslaves, we
were confined like an embryo in its
mothers womb, and our voice (dibur) was disconnected from
our deepest inner voice (kol); only when we cried out Did God
hear us and redeem us.
This year in Israel is the Shemittah year, the sabbatical year,
farmers are supposed to give the land a rest. Although certainly there is a practical side of leaving fields fallow periodically, there is also a sense that in letting it rest, we are treating
the earth with dignity, as a thou rather than an it, an object
to be taken advantage of and discarded. David Seidenberg, in
God’s Image in the More Than Natural World, cites a Hasidic
tradition that that rocks are silent because they are on a high
level of mystical comprehension that leaves them speechless.
The world, just like each of us, is a spiritual being, and deserves
our respect. Especially at this moment of history, I am deeply conscious of the world crying out from its distress. Can we
ourselves become the mouthpiece (dibur) for the world’s inner
voice that expresses such pain?
Experimental Shabbat
Many of you have told me how much you have enjoyed some
of the alternative services we have offered on Experimental
Shabbat. In response to popular demand, we are going monthly; please let me know if there are any formats/activities you
would like us to try, and also if you would like to lead something.
Some people have asked what the goal of the experiment is,
and whether it is still an experiment. My goal is to encourage
us to play with different modalities and techniques for Shabbat
morning study & worship. For example, at our January service,
we read from the Torah in Hebrew & English, and at our March
service, Bea Opengart and Sarah Barnard will be leading us in
Shalom Yoga. If there are things we try which you would like
to see more of in a regular way, or even to bring into the main
service, we can do that; if we try something you don’t like, then
we have learned something
from the experience.
Passover
What
constitutes hametz?
Hametz, technically, is fermented grain, which is created when any of the 5 grains
(wheat, oat, barley, rye or spelt)
page 4
come in contact with water and sit for 18 minutes. Although
traditionally Ashkenazim added legumes to this list (most notably corn, soy, and beans), many in the Conservative movement argue that these days legumes should be considered
kosher for Passover. It is not allowed in any amount (it isn’t
annulled in small quantities), and we are not allowed to eat,
own, or benefit from it. The prohibition is from Friday, April 3,
at about 10 am, through Friday, April 11 (practically speaking,
through the end of Shabbat, April 12)
Many foods, if bought before Passover, are fine because of
the declaration of bitul hametz (negation of hametz) which we
make the day before Passover. Pesah guides are available in
the office if you would like a list of specific foods which need a
Passover hechsher.
Yontiff
The rules for yontiff are the same as Shabbat (i.e. the 39
melachot), except that we are allowed to cook, carry, and
transfer fire. In addition, besides not eating hametz, we are
not allowed to own or possess it.
Pet food is a big issue for many of us. I recommend purchasing grain free pet food, which is widely available in mouth
watering varieties.
Yontiff Preparations
Candlelighting—Besides
lighting
festival candles each night (during
yontiff, it should be from a pre-existing flame, as we are not allowed to
create a new flame), we light a yahrzeit candle to use for lighting the
next night’s candles, as well as gas
stoves/ovens.
Sale of Hametz—If you would like me
to be your agent for selling hametz,
please send in the form or email me
with the text (which will be sent out
in the weekly email)
Eruv Tavshilin-Technically, since yontiff is its own sacred day,
we should not be using it to prepare for Shabbat. In order to
cook on April 10 & 11 (which is yontiff) for Shabbat (April 12),
we have 2 options:
a. We can start Shabbat preparations before yontiff (i.e. on
April 9), symbolized by an eruv tavshilin (combining foods).
This Eruv consists of 2 food items, to be served on Shabbat,
cooked before yontiff starts. As long as the Eruv has not been
eaten, you can cook food for Shabbat.
b. We can cook a large quantity of food for yontiff and have
the leftovers on Shabbat
I am looking forward to sharing a joyous, meaningful, and
liberating Passover season together.
B’yedidut, Rabbi David B. Siff

Presidents Message
Dear Fellow Congregants:
O
n Valentine’s Day (February 14th) our new rabbi David Siff was officially installed as the senior
rabbi of Congregation B’nai Avraham. This was a historic moment in the 100+ year life of our congregation.
I view this event as symbolic of our renewal as a congregation. Working together as a team, we will together
rededicate our efforts to ensuring the growth of Northern Hills Synagogue. This will involves of course enhancing our ritual services, recruiting new members and changing some programmatic priorities. Currently,
your leadership is formulating a strategic plan for the future. This will involve reaching out to our members
and the community including unaffiliated Jews in our neighborhoods. We are and will be planning
membership events for new and prospective members and a new member Shabbat Service.
All of us are looking forward to soon celebrating Pesach together with our families, commemorating our liberation and redemption from Egypt. At this time, we should also reflect on how fortunate we are
to freely practice our religion and to observe our ancient Passover traditions both here in American and in
Israel. I wish all of you and your families a very happy Pesach.
Warmly,
David I. Bernstein
President

Message from Moreh Maksim
I
would like to start a new series
of articles. The purpose of this series is to create a short, monthly
family lesson to inspire discussion around your Shabbat table.
The inspiration for this format is due to a similar series of
emails I receive from URJ entitled, “Ten Minutes of Torah.”
Hopefully, these mini lessons will inspire your Shabbat discussions.
There will be an introduction, “The Situation,” consisting of a short story based on a prevalent theme. A host
or a family member will read the situation, then ask the
questions in the, “Thought Depot.” After everyone has
offered their personal responses, you can then look at
“What Our Traditions Say” to discover some passages for a
discussion that deal with the topic
at hand.
Our first lesson is entitled, Your
Friends Make a Difference:
The Situation:
How do you define a friendship?
This question has different answers depending on whom you
ask. For some people, a true friend
will consist of individuals, who
trust one another, with whom you
are comfortable to share your feelings, and stands by you no matter
the situation. For other people, true
friendship consists of someone you
can play sports with, go fishing, or
hang out with on a lazy afternoon. In fact, regardless, of
how you define friendship, scientists believe they are of
great importance.
In fact, the significance of making friends/friendship, is
especially true when students make their transition from
elementary school to middle school. In younger grades,
teachers serve a greater part of friendship development
than in middle school, when, “BFFs,” take center stage.
A noted psychologist, Thomas Dishion, demonstrates that
students in grades 6-8 whose friends are socially active
and don’t make trouble tend to get better grades. On the
other hand, kids whose friends constantly get into trouble
tend not to do well in class.
He points out that: “Puberty is taking place, the brain
page 10
is changing rapidly. Kids’ brains are almost wired to be
reading the social world to see how they fit in, and the
school is the arena for it.”
Of course, parents have been telling children this for
generations: “It’s important who your friends are.” In
other words, kids whose friends value music, tend to be
involved in music. Kids whose friends drink or do drugs
tend to mimic those habits. During middle school years,
children are constantly in the process of being affected
by the people around them.
Thought Depot:
Who are your friends? Do you hang out with people
from lots of different groups?
Why are they fun to be around? What do you like to
do when you get together?
What qualities should
a good friend possess? Do
they need to be cool, truthful, and dependable? Are
they someone you can talk
to when times get rough?
Are there some people who
you think might be a bad influence on you?
Now, think about your best
friend. What makes them
such a good friend? What
do you like about them?
What do they like about
you? How would life be different without them?
What Our Traditions Say:
“He who overlooks an offense promotes good will; he
who repeats a tale separates friends” (Proverbs 17:9).
“Two are better than one, for if they fall, the one will lift
up his fellow.” ~~Ecclesiastes Kohelet 49:10).
“I have learned much from my teachers, but from my
friends more than my teachers” (BT Ta’anit 7a).
“Who raises his hand against a friend is wicked even if
he does not strike him.” (Talmud, Sanhedrin).
“Distance oneself from a bad neighbor, and do not befriend an evil person” (Pirkei Avot, 1:7).
“Who shames his friend in public has no share in the
world to come” (Pirkei Avot, 3:11).

Part II : Sunday, March 15th 10:30am -11:30am Is It Really Possible To Be Happy
With Your Lot?
Part III : Sunday, April 19th 10:30am -11:30am Overcoming Grief and Depression
Rabbi Emeritus George Barnard
O
As part of the congregation’s commitment to tzedakah, in the Jewish community and in the
community at large, we have two food collection barrels in the vestibule of the synagogue. One
is managed by the Men’s Club, and one is dedicated to the Jewish Family Service Food Pantry.
Recently, Rabbi Barnard took the contents of the Men’s Club barrel to the Mason Food Pantry, and Ron and Sandy Richards took the contents of the other barrel to the JFS Food Pantry.
When you bring donations of non-perishable food items to refill these barrels, please note that
there is no reason why people who use the Mason Food Pantry cannot eat food which happens
to be kosher, and the JFS Food Pantry is not exclusively kosher, so there is no need to sort the
food donations. Also, remember that we will soon be asked to make donations to the
Samuel S. Rockwern Passover Delivery Project (a project which started at NHS!).
ne of the most enduring activities at Northern Hills Synagogue is organized
Talmud study. The activity was initiated by Rabbi Bertram Mond in the 1960s, and
Rabbi Siff currently leads Talmud study on Saturday mornings from 8:45 a.m. until
the beginning of morning services at 9:30 a.m. The Babylonian Talmud is the
classical statement of the Oral Torah, which stands beside the Written Torah as a basis
for Judaism, and Talmud study has been at the center of Jewish learning for centuries.
The first credible translation of the Talmud into English was published by the Soncino
Press in England between the World Wars, and, while it still is useful, it is showing
its age. The synagogue owns a Soncino Talmud set as well as some volumes of other
recent English translations.
Leah Pentelnik Letts, Tamar Pentelnik Ribnick, and Elana Pentelnik, in honor of
the significant birthday of their father Steven (a regular participant in Talmud study at NHS), made a generous donation
to buy the 16 volumes which have appeared so far of the Steinsaltz-Noé edition of the Talmud. This edition includes the
traditional Hebrew-Aramaic text, a contemporary English translation, and a unique commentary prepared under the
direction of Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, an Israeli scholar who has revolutionized Talmud study.
In order to buy the additional volumes (26 more are expected) as they appear, the synagogue will need additional
donations.
Any donation is welcome, but a donation of $54 will enable you to dedicate a volume. Please include a memo with
donations, telling the purpose of the gift.

Jewish Summer Camping
Jewish summer camping is one of the most important aspects of American Jewish life, and our
congregation and community offer several kinds of
assistance to families who want to take advantage
of this resource.
2. The community program makes grants for up to two years to any individual child. The Singerman Fund makes grants also to repeat campers beyond two years, subject to the availability of funds in
relation to the number of applicants.

Both the synagogue’s Singerman Fund and the

Judaism, while the community fund has a longer list of approved camps.

give special mention to Camp Ramah,
the camping arm of the Conservative
movement. There are seven Ramah
Camps around the country, and Cincinnati kids
attend the camp in Wisconsin. Ramah offers a
first-rate camping experience and also a unique
experience in Jewish living. Information is available at the synagogue or at

The Movie: “Anita”
Anita is the story of a young woman with Down syndrome (Alejandra Manzo) who lives a happy, routine
life in Buenos Aires, being meticulously cared for by her mother Dora (Academy Award nominee Norma
Aleandro). One tragic morning in 1994, everything changes when Anita is left alone, confused and helpless after the nearby Argentine Israelite Mutual Association is bombed (the deadliest bombing in Argentina’s history). As Anita wanders through the city, she learns not only to care for herself, but touches the
lives of those around her, from an alcoholic to a family of Asian immigrants, ~Menemsha Films

ewish tradition teaches that we have a responsibility
to make the world a better place for future generations. One
method of accomplishing this is to leave a Jewish Legacy.
This obligation is being furthered by the Jewish Federation of

assist greater Cincinnati congregations and Jewish agencies to
increase their endowments – for more

meeting. A considerable number of Board members have submitted a non-binding Letter of Intent to provide a legacy gift.
You don’t have to be wealthy to participate – a legacy commitment of any size will help build our synagogue’s endowment and
provide vital resources for our future when you are no longer here
to support us and other charitable organizations. This is the time
to ensure our collective Jewish future by building a strong, secure
and permanent endowment for our Synagogue. By completing a
nonbinding Letter of Intent to leave an after-lifetime gift, you can
help us reach our goal and secure a $10,000 grant for
NHS-CBA! Additional information about CYJL-- NHS-CBA will be
provided in this bulletin on an ongoing basis. Additionally, members will be contacted beginning on March 1. To request a Letter
of Intent or for questions and comments, please contact Bill, Joe,
