LITIGATION too often is the only means of resolving disputes. Litigation

not much. Because of increasing dissatisfaction among participants in lawsuits,
a group of Maryland’s leading attorneys formed ADR MARYLAND, a nonprofit service that offers an alternative process for effective dispute resolution.
The process, used successfully throughout the country, is Alternative Dispute
Resolution or “ADR.”
ADR MARYLAND offers the advantages of fair, fast, and cost efficient
methods of dispute resolution. Just as important, ADR MARYLAND provides
control, confidentiality and relationship preservation often destroyed by
litigation. When a dispute arises involving your interests, ADR MARYLAND
urges you to consider arbitration or mediation for possible resolution before
resorting to litigation, or as a means to terminate pending litigation. ADR
MARYLAND provides a panel of neutral Maryland attorneys to serve as
impartial arbitrators or mediators in the dispute resolution process.

Mr. Baldwin practices in the area of commercial litigation, personal injury
(auto tort, medical malpractice and products liability) and professional
liability. Since 1996 he has successfully mediated settlements in over two
hundred cases and has served as an arbitrator in the out-of-court resolution of
litigation. In 2011 he was selected as Best Lawyers Lawyer of The Year for
mediation/arbitration in the D.C./Baltimore metro area. He graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law with
Honors (1975), where he was the Editor in Chief of the Law Review. Prior
to law school Mr. Baldwin served as an Infantry Officer in the United States
Marine Corps, and was honorably discharged in 1972 at the rank of Captain.
Mr. Baldwin is a Fellow of The American College of Trial Lawyers (peer
selection of the top 1% of trial lawyers in the country). He is a member
of The Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference, a Fellow of the American Bar
Foundation and a Fellow of the Maryland Bar Foundation. His skill as a trial
lawyer is reflected by induction into the American Board of Trial Advocates,
peer designation in the Best Lawyers in America publications, peer designation
in Super Lawyers, and inclusion in the Martindale-Hubbell Bar Register of
Preeminent Lawyers. He was selected on a second occasion by Best Lawyers
in America as Lawyer of The Year in the area of litigation. He is a recipient of
the Maryland Bar Foundation Professional Legal Excellence Award for The
Advancement of Professional Competence and has been recognized for his
leadership in pro bono activities by the Equal Justice Council.
Mr. Baldwin is past Chair of the Maryland State Bar Judicial Appointments Committee, past Chair of the Professionalism Committee, past Chair of the
Committee on Laws, a former member of the Maryland Court of Appeals
Commission on Professionalism and former member of the Maryland Volunteer
Legal Services Board of Directors. He has served an adjunct professor of law
at the University of Baltimore and University of Maryland Law Schools, as
well as a faculty member in continuing legal education programs.

Paul D. Bekman graduated from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1971.
Since his graduation, Mr. Bekman has concentrated his practice in the handling of
serious personal injury and wrongful death cases, with special emphases in medical
negligence, product liability, maritime and common carrier cases. He is currently
managing partner of the Baltimore law firm of Salsbury, Clements, Bekman, Marder
& Adkins, LLC. Mr. Bekman has lectured, taught and written extensively in the
areas of trial advocacy, personal injury and wrongful death, damages, and medical
negligence. He was certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy as a civil trial
specialist in 1980 and recertified in 1990, 1995 and 2000. In 1986, Mr. Bekman was
elected President of the Maryland Trial Lawyers Association. In 1982, he served as
Chairman of the Young Lawyers Section of the Bar Association of Baltimore City. In
1993, he served as President of The Bar Association of Baltimore City. In June 1997,
he became President of The Maryland State Bar Association.
In 1992, he was certified by the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys
and was re-certified in 2002. He is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates
(ABOTA) and served as President of the Maryland Chapter between 1997-2012. In
2000 he became a Senior Counsel of the American College of Barristers. In 2003, Mr.
Bekman was elected to membership in the International Academy of Trial Lawyers
whose membership is limited to 500 trial lawyers throughout the United States. In
1993, he was elected to membership in the American College of Trial Lawyers, the
foremost trial organization in the country, whose membership is limited to the top one
percent of trial lawyers in each state. In 2000 he was appointed State Committee Chair
for Maryland. In 2006 he became a Regent of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
In 2011 he served as Secretary of the College. Mr. Bekman has been recognized as a
top ten Maryland Super Lawyer in the Maryland Super Lawyer Magazine from 20062014. In 2011 he was recognized by the BABC as one of 11 Living Legal Legends.
Since 1989, and for every year thereafter, Mr. Bekman has been recognized as one
of the top lawyers in the country in The Best Lawyers in America. He is currently
recognized in five areas of practice: alternative dispute resolution, personal injury,
medical malpractice, products liability, and maritime law.
In addition, Mr. Bekman has been an elected member of the Trial Courts Judicial
Nominating Commission for Baltimore City since 1983. He has served as President of
the Maryland Bar Foundation, is a Fellow of the International Society of Barristers, a
member of the Academy of Catastrophic Injury Attorneys, and is a former Chairman of
the University of Maryland School of Law Board of Visitors. Mr. Bekman is a regular
faculty member and seminar participant for MICPEL and the National Business Institute
on a variety of topics, including medical malpractice, catastrophic injuries, wrongful
death, damages, trial tactics, trying the automobile accident case, premises liability,
joint tortfeasor releases, maritime law, settlements and other trial related topics.
For approximately 20 years, Mr. Bekman has regularly conducted mediations
and arbitrations in medical negligence, automobile, products liability, insurance,
construction, general liability, and complex commercial cases throughout the state
of Maryland.

As a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of The Johns Hopkins University, Herbert
Better, the founding partner of Zuckerman Spaeder LLP’s Baltimore office,
knows what it takes to succeed. He has applied that knowledge to his legal
practice, as exemplified by his recognition in The Best Lawyers in America in
five different categories Bet-The-Company Litigation, Commercial Litigation,
White-Collar Criminal Defense, Mediation and Arbitration – and his awards
for public and pro bono service. In 2014, Mr. Better was recognized by Best
Lawyers as the Baltimore Mediation Lawyer of the Year, and in 2011 he was

Before opening the Baltimore office in 1987, Mr. Better spent 14 years in the
U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maryland, starting as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in
1972. He served for five years as the First Assistant US Attorney, and in 1981
he was appointed by the U.S. District Court to serve as the U.S. Attorney.
Into 2003, the Maryland Chapter of the Federal Bar Association presented
Mr. Better with the Peter A. DiRito Award for his outstanding and dedicated
service to the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland and to the
Maryland Chapter. In 2001, the judges of the U.S. District Court for the
District of Maryland presented Mr. Better with the Pro Bono Service Award
and in 2011, they presented him with the Exceptional Service Award. He
currently is a member of the U.S. District Court’s Bench Bar Committee and
serves as President of The Historical Society of the United States District
Court for the District of Maryland.
He is a former president of the Maryland Chapter for the Federal Bar
Association and of the Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association.

Neil J. Dilloff graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
in 1970 where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In 1973, he graduated
from Georgetown University Law Center, where he served as an editor of Law
and Policy in International Business. Mr. Dilloff served in the US Navy as a
lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. from 1973-1977. In 1977,
he joined what was then known as Piper & Marbury and has been at the firm
ever since. He has engaged in a diversified national litigation practice including
complex commercial, professional liability, construction and insurance litigation.
He has tried more than 100 cases in state and federal courts and has won two of
the largest plaintiffs’ verdicts in Maryland history. He has successfully defended
law firms, insurance companies, and other organizations.
Mr. Dilloff has written more than 40 articles and books on a variety of
subjects. One of his recent articles won the 2014 Burton Distinguished Legal
Writing Award. He has taught civil trial practice, trial advocacy, settlement
negotiations and deposition practice for the continuing legal education arm
of the Maryland State Bar Association since 1983. He also serves as a senior
adjunct professor at the University of Maryland School of Law where he
teaches written and oral advocacy, legal malpractice law and alternate methods
of dispute resolution and at the University of Baltimore School of Law where
he teaches trial advocacy. Since 2002, he has served as a civil case mediator
on the Baltimore City Circuit Court’s Mediation Panel where he has handled
hundreds of mediations. He also has been appointed as a civil case mediator in
the Circuit Court for Baltimore and Frederick Counties.
In Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, the leading
global research firm Chambers & Partners ranks him as one of the best business
litigators in Maryland. Chambers praises him as “one of the best trial lawyers in
the country,” a “master of the courtroom” whose “thoroughness, integrity and
intellect were all deemed to be absolutely first-rate.” He has been ranked by
Chambers in the first tier of Maryland business litigators for several years. He
has been named to the Best Lawyers in America since 2006 in four categories:

Paul H. Ethridge has practiced law in Maryland since 1973 and in the District
of Columbia since 1976. He has held an “AV” rating from Martindale-Hubbell
for more than two decades. Having served three separate terms on the Board
of Governors of the Maryland State Bar Association, Mr. Ethridge also had the
privilege of sitting on the Maryland State Bar Association Board of Governors’
Executive Committee for two terms as well. He was the chair of the Maryland
State Bar Association Committee on Rules of Practice and liaison with the
Rules Committee. He was also the chair of the Maryland State Bar Association
Committee on Laws.
Paul was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, having
the distinction of being chosen in this select membership as one of the less than
one percent of all trial lawyers in the nation. Paul was elected to the Maryland
Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. As a member of the
Montgomery County Bar Association, he served on the Executive Committee
from 1985-1995.
Mr. Ethridge is admitted to the Bars of the United States Supreme Court, the

Mr. Ethridge served on the Governor’s Trial Court Nominating Commission
from 1998 to 2002 and on the Litigation Section Council of the Maryland State
Bar. Currently he is on the Governor’s Appellate Nominating Commission.
He is a frequent lecturer for Montgomery County, State, and National CLE
programs. He has sat on numerous Montgomery County Bar Association
Committees, including the Judicial Selections Committee, the Insurance
Committee and the Administration of Justice Committee.
Mr. Ethridge’s experience includes hundreds of trials involving business
disputes, medical malpractice, product liability, personal injury matters,
insurance coverage disputes and legal malpractice. Currently, he serves as a
Special Mediator and Special Master to the Circuit Court for Montgomery
County, Maryland. He is part of a group of Maryland’s leading attorneys,
mediators and arbitrators that formed ADR Maryland, a non-profit service
that offers an alternative process for effective dispute resolution. Paul also
has the distinct honor of receiving the Leadership in Law Award presented by
the Daily Record. Paul is proud to have served on the governing body of the
Montgomery County Special Olympics. He presently volunteers at The Lords
Table kitchen, and has actively been involved in his church and other outreach
community activities.

Robert L. Ferguson, Jr. is a trained mediator, having taken the 40 hour course in
civil mediation as well as advanced mediation for complex cases. Mr. Ferguson has
been mediating cases since 1996 and is a court appointed mediator in the circuit
court in five Maryland counties, Mr. Ferguson is a Fellow of the American College
of Trial Lawyers. His practice is concentrated in the defense of complex personal
injury and construction cases, with extensive experience in insurance coverage,
aviation, maritime and products liability matters. Mr. Ferguson is a Past Chair of
the Litigation Section of the Maryland State Bar Association, Past President of

Mr. Graham has been included in The Best Lawyers in America for more than
10 years. That publication recognizes him in the areas of Bet-the-Company
Litigation, White-Collar Criminal Defense, Commercial Litigation, and
Alternative Dispute Resolution as one of the leading lawyers in Maryland. In
a recent survey of his peers conducted by Baltimore Magazine, Mr. Graham
was recognized as one of the 30 best Baltimore lawyers and one of the four
best business litigators. Chambers USA rated Mr. Graham as one of the best
commercial litigators in Maryland for 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. And Mr.
Graham has been listed as on of the Top Ten lawyers in Maryland by Super
Lawyers each year from 2007-2015, and as the Top Vote Getter in every one
of those years but one.
Mr. Graham was the Maryland State Chairman of the American College of Trial
Lawyers from 1996 to 1998. He was Chairman of the Ethics 2000 Committee,
a committee of the Maryland State Bar Association, from 2001 to 2003, and
a member of the committee appointed by the Maryland Court of Appeals to
study and recommend changes to the Maryland Rules of Professional Conduct.
He has held many offices and board and committee positions with the ABA,
the FBA, and the Maryland and Baltimore City Bar Associations. Mr. Graham
served on several Maryland and federal judicial selection committees and on
the Maryland Judicial Selection Commission. He is a former President of the
Baltimore Courthouse and Law Museum Foundation, and of the Maryland
Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. He is a founding member of ADR
Maryland, a non-profit forum for alternative dispute resolution. He is a
permanent member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference. He is currently
the chairperson of the committee appointed by Maryland’s federal court to
study and recommend changes to that court’s rules on attorneys’ fees. Mr.
Graham has been Chair of Maryland Legal Aid’s Equal Justice Council from
2002 to date.
Mr. Graham is frequently invited to lecture on a wide variety of subjects before
diverse audiences. He has authored numerous articles and presentations, such

From 1966 to 1969, Mr. Greenwald served as a trial attorney in the United States
Department of Justice. Since joining Gordon Feinblatt in 1969, he has served as
lead counsel in a broad spectrum of cases. Many of them have involved issues of
first impression and significant constitutional litigation. He has argued before the
Supreme Court of the United States.
Most recently, Mr. Greenwald has defended providers of financial services in class
action litigation. He also has served as national trial and appellate counsel defending
a firearms manufacturer in nationwide litigation brought by New York State and
various municipalities and individuals. He also has served as lead counsel in multistate litigation defending a Roman Catholic order of priests in child abuse cases. He
also has served as a mediator and arbitrator in a variety of cases.

In 2001 Mr. Greenwald was selected by Lawyers Weekly USA from the more than a
million lawyers throughout the country as one of ten “Lawyers of the Year” who had
a “noticeable impact on the law and legal system in this country.” He also has been

Mr. Iliff has been practicing in the area of civil litigation since admission to the
Maryland Bar in December 1969. His practice has involved cases in the areas
of professional negligence in health care, dental care, law and accounting.

Mr. Klein is a name principal in the law firm of Wharton Levin Ehrmantraut &
Klein, P.A. Since 1976, Mr. Klein has focused on the defense of products liability,
mass tort and complex commercial matters. He is a trained mediator, with emphasis
on the mediation of complex matters. Admitted to practice in Maryland and the
District of Columbia, Mr. Klein also has been admitted pro hac vice as lead counsel

Mr. Klein’s experience includes serving as national coordinating counsel in toxic

the Rules of Practice and Procedure. He chaired or was a member of numerous
Rules subcommittees, and in these roles helped develop procedural rules governing
all aspects of litigation in the Maryland court system.
Mr. Klein has taught at the Maryland Judicial Institute, and has published and
lectured extensively on product liability law and civil practice in the United States
and abroad. From 1976 to 1987, he worked as an associate and then as an equity
partner in the Baltimore office of Piper & Marbury (now known as DLA Piper).

Thomas (“Tom”) E. Lynch, III is a member of the Real Estate Litigation Practice
Group and has been a partner and then a principal of Miles & Stockbridge for more
than 30 years. Mr. Lynch has a very diversified litigation and alternative dispute
resolution background. Since the mid-1980s, Mr. Lynch has represented industry,
large and small businesses, financial institutions and individuals on environmental
matters, including environmental litigation, compliance counseling, transactional
matters including mergers and acquisitions, and contract negotiation. Mr. Lynch
also has handled a very broad range of complex litigation matters, including
emergency injunctive practice, employment and employment-related litigation,
general corporate and civil business litigation, land use and real estate litigation.
Mr. Lynch also is one of our most experienced alternative dispute resolution
practitioners.
Mr. Lynch also is known for his very broad knowledge and experience on ethics
issues. He has participated as a member of the Maryland State Bar Ethics Committee
since 1989. Tom was selected by the Maryland Court of Appeals to participate on
a committee, chaired by Judge Rodowsky, retired Judge of the Court of Appeals,
which rewrote the Maryland Rules of Professional Conduct in 2003. He was also
selected by the Judges of the Circuit Court for Frederick County to serve as Frederick
County’s representative on the Professionalism Task Force headed by a Judge of the
Maryland Court of Appeals. He was thereafter appointed by the Court of Appeals
to serve on the Professionalism Commission as the representative from Frederick
County and chaired the Professionalism Subcommittee of that body, which drafted
the Ideals of Professionalism approved by the Commission and adopted by the
Maryland Court of Appeals. Tom now serves as the Vice Chair of the Board of
the Maryland Professionalism Center, Inc. and chairs the Subcommittee on Aging
Attorneys, Substance Abuse and Other Factors That Affect Professionalism.
Mr. Lynch also is well recognized for his contributions to his community and to
the Maryland and Frederick County Bar Associations. Tom served as the President
of the Frederick County Bar Association in 2000. He also was responsible for the
creation of a non-profit consensus building organization called the Committee for
Frederick County, which he chaired from 1998 until July of 2003. He served as the
Vice Chair and then Chair of the Solid Waste Advisory Committee for Frederick
County. Mr. Lynch also serves on the Board of Directors of the Frederick County
YMCA and on the Board of Directors of the Frederick County Chamber of
Commerce, having just completed a two year term as its Chair.
As a result of his contributions to his community and to the Bar, Tom was selected
by the Daily Record as one of Maryland’s “Leaders in the Law” and, was given a
Vision of Character Award by the Character Counts Council of Frederick County.
Prior to joining Miles & Stockbridge in 1980, Mr. Lynch worked for Venable,
Baetjer & Howard between 1977 and 1980, working as an associate for Francis D.
Murnaghan, Jr., who became a distinguished Judge of the United States Court of

Tim Maloney has extensive Maryland trial and appellate experience. In June
of 2014, he was named “Trial Lawyer of the Year” by the Litigation Section
of the Maryland State Bar. That same month, he received the John Hardwicke
Award for Outstanding Contribution to field of administrative law in the State
of Maryland. Two years earlier, he was named “Trial Lawyer of the Year” by
the Maryland Association of Justice.
Maloney is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. From 1988 to
2014, he served as a member of the Rules Committee of the Maryland Court of
Appeals. He also serves on the Court’s Character Committee and is a member
of the Maryland Judicial Appellate Nominating Commission.
Maloney has been the lead counsel in pioneering civil rights and employment
litigation, winning over $30 million in settlements and verdicts in the last
five years. He is also highly recognized for his commercial litigation and
administrative law practice, winning major legal challenges to zoning
decisions at National Harbor, Cafritz, Melford and other major developments.
He has won major election law cases, including the challenge to the 2012
casino gaming referendum, the recent attempts to petition Baltimore County
zoning maps to referendum, and the 2014 campaign finance challenge to
Brown-Ulman campaign.
Maloney serves on the Executive Board of the University of Maryland
Foundation, the Board of Governors of the Maryland Catholic Conference,
and the Board of Trustees of Archbishop Carroll High School. He currently

Judge Matricciani brings more than 40 years of experience as a practicing

Since joining Gordon Feinblatt in 1977, Sheila Sachs has served as Chair
of the Family and Juvenile Law Committee of the Maryland State Bar
Association and is a member of the American Academy of Matrimonial
Lawyers. After many years of traditional family law practice either litigating
issues attendant to divorce or custody to negotiating settlements, Sheila Sachs
emphasizes to clients that a private mode of dispute resolution of divorce and
other family disputes through mediation or collaborative practice is more
effective than litigation.

Active in Bar Association activities, Sheila Sachs is a former President
of the Bar Association of Baltimore City. In addition, Ms. Sachs has
served on various boards, including the Baltimore City Board of School
Commissioners, the Judicial Nominating Commission for Baltimore City,
the Board of Trustees of Goucher College and presently serves on the Board
of Managers of Haverford College. She is rated in Martindale-Hubbell an
AV Preeminent Lawyer, was designated by the Daily Record as an Influential
Marylander in 2008 and 2012, is the recipient of awards as a family lawyer
and for leadership in the legal profession. In 2012, Ms. Sachs was named by
Best Lawyers in America as Family Law Mediation – Baltimore “Lawyer of
the Year.” Currently, she serves on the Board of Collaborative Professionals
of Baltimore, reflecting her conviction that the courtroom is not a desirable
forum for resolving family conflicts.

Mr. Stanley joined the firm of Semmes, Bowen & Semmes in 1971 after service
in the United States Navy. Throughout his career, Mr. Stanley has represented
diverse clients regarding disputes arising under a wide variety of commercial
and insurance contracts. His particular focus has been on advising clients in
connection with claims involving construction and procurement projects and
in defending life, health and disability insurers in the state and federal courts
of Maryland and the District of Columbia and before arbitration panels. His
service to construction industry clients has included advice concerning the
drafting, negotiation and administration of construction contracts in an effort
to avoid disputes. He has been a frequent speaker to various professional and
industry groups on these topics.
Mr. Stanley is a trained mediator and arbitrator. For the last 18 years, he has
frequently served as an arbitrator or mediator of disputes under construction,
commercial and insurance contracts. He is a member of the American
Arbitration Association National Panel of Commercial Arbitrators, a member
of its Mediation Panel and has been approved as a mediator by the Circuit
Courts for Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Howard County. He has been
certified as a mediator for the Business and Technology Case Management
Program in the Circuit Courts of Maryland. He is also a member of the FINRA
Board of Arbitrators.
Mr. Stanley has been listed in Best Lawyers in America, Maryland Super

Gregory K. Wells, a 1984 graduate of the University of Maryland School of
Law , concentrates his practice in the trial of Plaintiff’s medical malpractice,
serious personal injury and wrongful death cases, as well as commercial and
business litigation. Mr. Wells has been listed in Best Lawyers in America in
the specialties of Medical Malpractice, Personal Injury, Product Liability and
Professional Malpractice Law since 2007. He has also been listed in both the
“Maryland Lawyers” published by Baltimore Magazine, and “Washington,
D.C. Super Lawyers” published by Law & Politics since 2007.
Mr. Wells is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and is a
Past Chair of the Maryland State Committee of the American College of Trial

Mr. Wells is the immediate Past Chairs of the Trial Courts Nominating

Litigation Section Council. He is also is a former Adjunct Faculty Member
(Trial Practice) at the University of Maryland School of Law and has also
served on the faculty of the Maryland Trial Advocacy Institute. He was recently
invited to membership in the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference. Mr Wells is
also a Life Fellow of the Maryland Bar Foundation.
A long-time resident of Prince George’s County, Maryland, Mr. Wells’
reputation and commitment to his community resulted in several appointments
including, People’s Zoning Counsel (1995-1997); Member (and Chair) of the
Prince George’s County Cable Television Commission (1985-1991); Special
Counsel to the County Executive (1994-2002) and Commissioner, Washington
Suburban Sanitary Commission (2002-2003).

John is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has tried major
construction cases in numerous jurisdictions. He represents owners/developers,
lenders and other funding agencies, design-builders, engineers, construction
managers, contractors and equipment manufacturers.
John also arbitrates as an advocate before panels of the American Arbitration
Association (AAA), Center for Public Resources (CPR) and the International
Chamber of Commerce (ICC), and represents clients in mediations, mini-trials and
dispute review board matters. John also serves as a neutral in ADR matters, as an
arbitrator in domestic and international arbitrations and as a mediator.
John serves as a member of the Washington & Lee University Board of Trustees. He
has served as the chair of the University’s national annual fund, on the University’s
Athletic Council, past President of the Law School Alumni Association, and is a
recipient of the University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award.
