Remember to check your minimum specifications of your computer before you start the
installation of the software.
7. In this screen that displays, the Local Disk (C:) is the first icon and this represents your Hard Drive. Under
that icon is a section Devices with Removable Storage. This will represent your optical drive or any other
removable devices that you may attach to your computer, such as USB Flash drives. In the example, you
can see that the optical drive available is a DVD / CD Drive which can read DVDs and CDs. This drive is
most often referred to as the D: drive but this can change from computer to computer.
8. This is the hard drive on your computer, and is essentially your computer’s primary storage device. Your
primary hard drive is always referred to as your C: drive. On some computers, you may find more than
one hard drive. To find out how much free space you have on your hard drive, right click on the Local Disk
and select Properties.

[ Installing a Printer Driver ]
When you are using Sage Pastel Partner V12, you will need to have a printer driver installed on your computer,
even if you do not have a printer. Sage Pastel uses the printer driver when you print reports to your screen.
The terminology ‘print reports to screen’ basically means to view the report on your screen in the format it will
print. If you try to open a company in Sage Pastel without having a printer driver installed, you will get a
message asking you to install one and you will not be able to open the company until the printer driver is
installed.
There are two steps to installing a printer driver:
 Install the driver; and
 Set up the driver.
Installing a driver
We are now going to work through the steps on how to install a printer driver on your computer.

Lesson 1
Please note that depending on the Windows operating system you are using, the names of the
tabs and buttons may vary. The process remains the same for all operating systems
1. To see if there are any printer drivers installed on your computer, click on Start and look for Printers and
Faxes or Printers. If you do not have Printers and Faxes or Printers in the menu, then click on the Control
Panel icon. In the Control Panel, look for the Printers and Faxes or Printers icon. Double click on the
specific icon.

2. Once you have opened the Printers and Faxes screen, (as shown below), you will be able to see if there
are any printer drivers loaded on your computer. If there are no printers displayed in the screen, as shown
below, you will need to load a printer driver. If there is a printer listed in the screen, it is not necessary to
load another printer.
3. To load a printer driver, click on Add a printer in the Printer Tasks section on the left of the screen.

6. The Wizard will prompt you to select where the printer will be connected to. Because we are not going to
physically install a printer and are only going to install the software for the printer known as the driver, leave
the settings as they are. If however you wish to install your printer now then simply connect your printer as
shown on screen. Click on the Next button to continue.
7. On this screen you are required to select the make and model of the printer. Remember that this is only
the printer driver you are installing so even if there is no printer attached to your machine you will still be
required to select a driver from the list. Any common driver will get you started. Click on the Next button
to continue.

the printer driver you are installing so even if there is no printer attached to your machine you will still be
required to select a driver from the list. Any common driver will get you started. In our case, we will call
the printer Pastel Printer. Click on the Next button to continue.
9. Sharing your printer will allow everyone on the same network as you to print to this printer. Think of a
good share name for the printer. e.g. Janet’s A4 B&W Laser printer. This will let all other users know that
they can only print black and white A4 size documents on this printer. Click on the Next button to
continue.

If you receive errors when printing in Sage Pastel, or your printouts are not correct when you print
to screen or your printer, you can go through these steps to reinstall your printer driver, which may
have become corrupt. This can often solve many problems.
11
SAGE PASTEL PARTNER VERSION 12
Version 12.1
Lesson 1
Set up the driver
When you install a printer driver, the default settings are as per the manufacturer or your computer system.
Most systems and manufacturers use the American defaults. In South Africa, we use A4 paper as a standard
for printing; the American standard size of paper is Letter, which is longer and thinner than A4. This can cause
problems when printing in Sage Pastel.
We will now go through the steps to set the paper size on the printer driver to A4.
Depending on the printer that you have loaded, the screens may differ from the screens in the
activity. The important fact is that all the paper sizes must change to A4. Refer to your printers
help files if you experience problems.
1. Open the printer folder by selecting Start…Printer and Faxes. Right click on the Pastel Printer driver that
you installed, and select Properties. The screen below will display.
The selected paper sizes on the printer
driver are listed here. A4 is the only paper
size that should be listed.

2. To change the paper size, click on the Device Settings tab and then set all settings to use A4. This
includes the paper size for envelopes, if they are available on the printer.
3. Next, click on the Advanced tab, then find the Printing Defaults button at the bottom of the screen and
click on it.

screen where you will need to click on Apply and then OK.

You have now installed and set up your printer driver to print Sage Pastel A4 documents correctly.
If you are using a virtual printer, confirm that the settings of the virtual printer are also set to use
paper size A4.
[ Check the system date ]
It is very important that the date on your computer is correct when you are working in Sage Pastel.
Sage Pastel will not allow you to work in a company if your system date has been changed since
the last time you worked in it.

1. To check your system date, place your mouse cursor over the clock in the bottom right hand corner of
your screen.

2. The date will pop up in a little block over the clock.
3. The Date and Time Properties screen will allow you to set the time and date for your system. You will also
set the time zone you live in on the Time Zone tab. To change the date or time, double click on the clock
at the bottom right hand corner of the screen and the Date and Time Properties screen will open.
4. Click on the Apply button and then the OK button to save any changes that you made to the date and
time.
[ Change screen resolution ]
Your screen resolution refers to the amount of pixels used to fill your computer screen. Partner V12 requires a
screen resolution not less than 1024 x 768 for all information to display correctly.
If your screen resolution is set too big, for example 800 x 600, your processing screens in Sage Pastel will not
fit on the page and you will have to scroll up and down and to the left and right while you are working, which
can be very frustrating. Also, some of your icons will overlap, making it difficult to select them.
If your screen resolution is smaller, for example, 1280 x 800, Partner V12 will still display. The only issue with a
screen resolution that is smaller is that the display is smaller and you may strain your eyes to view small print
on your screen.
17
