A message from our school leaders
A message from our leadership team
Dear Parents, Carers and Children,
Our school’s activities to celebrate and support understanding of Harmony Day have “kicked” off
to a brilliant start in class with Ibu Le Riche last week. Each class had their Sock Day, where
diversity and difference were acknowledged and appreciated. When next you’re in the school
have a look at the various strip photos of socked feet and legs – an innovative and thoughtful way
of representing how differences can be accepted and contribute to a colourful and rich social
climate.
The Harmony Day activities are continuing with family picnic lunches for Harmony Day next
Wednesday, at both preschools. Ibu Le Riche is also working with all classes in the Primary school
to create a space in the playground to represent the multiple cultures in Australia, reinforcing the
message ''Everyone Belongs' and 'Taking a Stand Together.' Each child will be writing and/or
drawing a self-portrait on a hand shape of their choice to represent their commitment to both
messages. Watch the Junior playground to see the Labyrinth appear. Next week is also the
Harmony Day –Everyone Belongs-Lunch Week. There are notices elsewhere in this newsletter
about ordering these.
Congratulations and thanks continue to the dedicated team of House Captains who are helping
with the safety in the bike racks each day. They are monitoring and guiding children placing their
bikes in the bike enclosure, and then returning just before bell time in the afternoons to wheel
out some of the bikes to avoid the hectic congestion at 3.02!
th
On Thursday 26 March (Week 8) we will give a brief introduction to how we use the school
NAPLAN results in planning and teaching. As you will be aware, NAPLAN testing is carried out
nationally in May for students in Years 3,5,7, and 9, with results being available online to schools
generally in September/October. This information helps us evaluate school programs and set
priorities for the school and for individual students. The meeting will be held at 6.30, before the
P&C meeting.
th
There will also be an information session on helping your beginning reader – Wednesday 18
March. While this session is primarily aimed at kindergarten all parents with early readers are
invited to come along. Mrs Albrecht’s Kindergarten Kittens’ room, 6pm.
Yes, I wrote that correctly! Yvonne was married last weekend – CONGRATULATIONS
YVONNE! She wishes to change her name at school as well, so no more Mrs Richardson – our
Kinder Kittens teacher is Mrs Yvonne Albrecht and her class has also changed its name to KYA.
Have you noticed the bursts of colour all over the school playground? The gardening group,
together with Miss Smith and Mrs Fitzgerald, have been busily working, planting, wheelbarrowing
soil, spreading mulch and watering the newly planted gardens at lunch times. Thank you to all for
your fantastic efforts – the school is looking terrific.
Enjoy this lovely autumn,
Frances

Celebrating 50 Years
Dear Parents/Carers,
Each year, Curtin Primary school offers students the opportunity to take part in the ICAS (International Competitions and
Assessment for Schools) external examination program. Participation is offered to students in YEAR 3, YEAR 4, YEAR 5 and YEAR
6. Year 2 students are also able to enter the English, Science and Mathematics competitions.
These competitions are not compulsory and are offered to the students on a voluntary basis. The ICAS competitions are run by
UNSW (University of New South Wales). The tests take the form of a written paper assessing each particular subject area. The
tests will be carried out at school under test conditions and invigilated by a teacher. This will mean that each student carrying
out the test will be absent from their normal class curriculum for the test period, usually starting at 9:30am. Please take this into
consideration.

Friday 27th March (Week 8)
11am-12.30pm
INVOLVEMENT
All children from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be participating in the Cross Country Carnival throughout
the morning. They may choose to walk or run the course.
ARRIVAL
Morning session at school will be as usual. Children will move down to the oval with their teacher after
recess. This event will be finished before lunch.
WHAT TO WEAR
Children will need to wear shorts, t-shirt, school hat and running shoes. Children are encouraged to
wear a top in the colour of their house (no singlets).
FREE ICEBLOCK
At the end of their race, children will receive an ice block (99% fruit – no added sugar), kindly donated
by the school canteen. If you do not wish your child to receive an iceblock, please inform your child’s
teacher.
HELPERS
At Curtin we are very lucky to have a fantastic Cross Country Course for the children to run, which
includes grass, concrete, dirt tracks, uphill and downhill. For safety reasons we need a number of
marshals placed around the course. We will have staff placed at various points, but we need parents to
help so the children can be well supervised at all times throughout the race. If you are able to help on
the day please contact me on the phone number or email address below, or return the reply slip to me.
The carnival should not go any longer than 1 ½ hours.
NB: I will place you on the course where you are able to see your own child compete.
