The past three parshiot have outlined detailed instructions for building the sanctuary: (Mishkan), its measurements, materials,
fabrication, and even naming the architects, (Bezalel and Ahaliav).

There must be a reason for this duplication. Many times in the Torah a word is used twice, a phrase is repeated and; always,
Chazal (rabbis) tell us there is a reason for the repetition; for emphasis of a second meaning. It is there with a message! The
building of the Mishkan and its symbolic meaning were so important that each detail had to be lovingly described as an
accomplished deed! By this repetition, it indicates a commitment to that deed!
The Torah states "And Bezalel made the arch of the Acacia wood...and he overlaid it with pure gold within and without." (Exodus
37:1-2)
Many symbolic interpretations of the Mishkan furniture have been offered. The best known relates to the fact that it was overlaid
with gold not only on the outside; where the precious metal was visible to all the beholders; but on the inside also, where it could
not be seen by the masses of onlookers. This requirement therefore, teaches that a person's inside should be like his/her
outside. One's public behavior should not differ from one's private conduct. One should not attempt to give an impression which
falsifies who one really is.
Another interpretation relates to the material of which the ark was constructed. Wood is alive. The tree represents growth and
development. Gold, on the other hand, is inert. Its value lies in its stability. It does not deteriorate with time. The Holy Ark thus
represents both growth and stability, because the Torah, contained within, facilitates both of these qualities. On the one hand it
permits personal spiritual growth and the growth of the collective knowledge of the community of Israel. On the other hand,
religious growth is conditioned on unchanging principles.
Growth and stability are often antithetical. The development of new ideas usually requires the rejection of old sancta. Not so in
the world of the Torah. Growth and stability are not mutually exclusive. They are interdependent. The Holy Ark is fashioned from
gold and wood.
