SPIRIT MISSION DAY
JUNE 25, 2009
Sister Chrysantha Chrunik
Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate
My religious vocation to the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate was secretly arranged for me by
my parents and the Lord Himself!
This is how it happened – I was a happy and healthy child, but at the age of two something
mysterious happened. I became hopelessly ill and not until later did the family discover that I had
childhood meningitis. My parents made the necessary preparations for my burial: a coffin, a white dress,
and a veil. They were later given to the neighbor’s child, two year old May Nazar who died shortly after.
I lived! As I was growing up, all I knew was I was very ill at the age of two and the family did not share
anything else. I attended SHA High School in Yorkton, SK. I was fascinated by the Sisters’ life and
started thinking about becoming one of them. In 1936, I entered Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate
novitiate in Mundare, Alberta. After my temporary vows, I was missioned to Winnipeg to teach evening
Ukrainian classes in various parishes. On August 15, 1945, I pronounced my Perpetual Vows at St.
Mary’s Church in Yorkton, SK in the presence of my parents, family and Sister Servants. It was only
now, after my Perpetual Vows, that my parents revealed the secret of my sudden recovery. The secret
was that my parents made a promise to God that if I should live, they would offer me for His exclusive
service. They did not force or even encourage me, they merely prayed. My parents were not rich
materially, but spiritually. They had deep faith and trust in Gods’ providence.
I had two older sisters in the same Community, Sr. Alphonse of Toronto, and Sr. Bernard of New
York. For me to respond to God’s call was easier because I saw that my sisters were happy in their
religious life. We are known to many as the ABC Sisters.
Most of my religious life was teaching primary grades in Catholic Schools. I taught in Montreal
from 1950-1956, and then moved to Winnipeg to teach in St. Nicholas School now known as Immaculate
Heart of Mary School from 1956-1990. Within that I also taught for a couple of years in Hamilton
Ontario and Detroit, Michigan. During my teaching years I have many memories of preparing little
children to receive their First Holy Communion. For me this has brought many joys.
I am most grateful to the Lord Jesus, Mother Mary and my parents for my vocation to the
religious life and never for a moment did I think leaving.
On October 19, 1986 I celebrated my 50th. Anniversary with Community of the Sisters Servant of
Mary Immaculate. I feel happier every day especially now that I have learned to endure pain, whatever
form it may be with Christ like acceptance and offer it for the souls by repeating the following
ejaculation: “Jesus, Mary and St. Joseph, I love you , save souls.” This prayer repeated often throughout
the day, also helps me to live in the presence of my God and Spouse.

My Daddy can do anything!
My Dad knows a lot… a whole lot.
My father does not know quite everything.
Oh well, naturally Father doesn’t know that either.
Oh, Father? He is hopelessly old-fashioned.
Oh, that man – he is out of date!
He knows a little bit about it, but not much.
I must find out what Dad thinks about it.
Before we decide, we will get Dad’s idea first.
What would Dad have thought about that?
My Dad knew literally everything!
I wish I could talk it over with Dad once more.

What can be more important than your Mother?
There isn’t anything to compare with the other.
She brought you into this world alone
And she’s the only one who would have ever known
How painful it must have been to do just that.
Not knowing things don’t come with a pat.
She worked so hard just bringing you up
(It’s not like looking after a pup).
You grow up so fast, and then she’s all alone,
But I hope you take time and call her by phone.
Then you marry and are on your own.
You visit her on important days alone.
You have children and they visit too,
Your mother loves when they come, that’s true.
It makes her happy in many ways,
Brightens up her lonely days.
Mother’s Day comes and you go over there.
She makes all the goodies for you to share.
So take care of your mothers, all of you.
Make her as happy as she did with you too.
Remember she’s the only mother you’ve got.
Some day she’ll be gone, and you’ll miss her a lot.
Show her that you really do care.
All the best to mothers everywhere!
Happy Mother’s Day to all.
Remember – just give her a call.

WEST NILE VIRUS
Mosquito Season is here. Protect yourself and residents against West Nile Virus.
Mosquitoes that have bitten infected birds spread West Nile Virus. If an infected mosquito bites you it is
unlikely that you will become ill; however in very few cases the virus can cause mild illness with
symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches and, sometimes a rash.
In very rare cases, the virus can cause encephalitis an inflammation of the brain. In the elderly, the virus
is more likely to cause such severe illness.
What Can You Do About West Nile Virus?
Protect yourself and resident sfrom mosquito bites:
Reduce the time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
Wear light colored, loose fitting long sleeved tops and long pants when outside especially between
dusk and dawn.
Apply insect repellant containing up to 30% DEET (DEET is not recommended for children under the
age 6 months). Insect repellent containing up to 30% DEET can be used on the elderly.
Check that doors and window screens fit tightly and are free from holes.
Reduce mosquito numbers:
Eliminate unnecessary standing water:
Clean eave troughs regularly so water does not collect.
Empty things that are in and around the yard such as pool covers, saucers under flowerpots, children’s
toys, pet bowls and wading pools regularly.
Cover openings in rain barrels with mosquito screening or tightly seal around the drain spout.
Clear yard of old tires and other debris that can hold rainwater.
Participate in Bird Surveillance:
Report any dead crows, magpies, gray jays, blue jays or ravens to Health Links at 788-8200 in
Winnipeg – 1-888-315-9257. Health Links will provide information on dead bird pick up or
disposal. Do not touch dead birds or animals with your bare hands.
Remember:
The risk of becoming seriously ill from West Nile Virus is very low. Most people bitten by an
infected mosquito will show no symptoms or very mild illness. In very few cases illness may
become severe.
Take steps to aviod mosquito bites
Reduce standing water
Report any dead crows, magpies, gray jays, blue jays or ravens to Health Links.

Three Little Prayers
Three men walking through the woods get lost and find themselves at a
raging river. As night begins to fall the men turn to prayer.
1st man: Dear God, please help me to cross this river.
*Poof*
A rubber raft appears and the man paddles and fights his way across
taking five hours.
2nd man: Dear God, please help me to quickly cross this river.
*Poof*
A wooden boat appears and he rows across to the other side of the river
taking three hours.
3rd man: Dear God, please give me the presence of mind, the courage and
ability to make it across the river.
*Poof*
The man changes into a woman, she reads the map, and walks over the
bridge.

BOUNCE THIS ALONG
My mail carrier told me that the US Postal service sent out a message to all letter carriers to put a
sheet of Bounce in their uniform pockets to keep yellow-jackets away.
I use them all the time when playing baseball and soccer.
I use it when I am working outside. It really works. The yellow jackets just veer around you.
All this time you’ve just been putting Bounce in the dryer!
It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them.
It also repels mice.
Spread sheets around foundation areas, or in trailers, or cars that are
sitting and it keeps mice from entering your vehicle.
It takes the odour out of books and photo albums that don’t get
opened too often.
It repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when
outdoors during mosquito season.
Eliminate static electricity from your television (or computer)
screen.
Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your
television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from
resettling.
Dissolve soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a sheet of bounce.
Collect cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract all the
loose hairs.
Eliminate static electricity from Venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of bounce to prevent
dust from resettling.
Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like
a tack cloth.
Eliminate odours in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry
bag or hamper.
Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight.

Charism of Blessed Josaphata
“To ennoble the heart of the people”
(Continuation April May edition)
One granddaughter related this: (paraphrased off the internet)
“Once upon a time, my 90 year old grandma sat feebly with her head down
staring at her hands. I sat down beside her, but she didn’t move. I asked her if
she was OK. Grandma raised her head, looked at me and smiled.
“Yes, I’m fine, thank you for asking,” she said. Then she asked me,
“Have you ever looked at your hands? I mean, really looked at your hands?”
“Stop and think about your hands, how they have served you throughout the years. These hands,
though wrinkled, shrivelled and weak have been the tools I have used all my life, to out and
embrace life.
They caught my fall when as a child I crashed upon the floor.
They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back.
My mother taught me to fold them in prayer.
They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots.
They dried the tears of my children and caressed the love of my life.
They wiped my tears when my husband went off to war.
They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent.
They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold our newborn daughter.
They wore the wedding band that showed the world that I was married and loved by someone
special.
They wrote letters home and trembled when I buried my parents and spouse.
They have held children, consoled neighbours, and shook in fists of anger when I didn’t
understand.
They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body.
They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw.
And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well, these hands hold me up, lay
me down and again continue to fold in prayer.
These hands are the mark of where I’ve been and ruggedness of my life.
But more importantly, it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when he leads me
home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the
face of Christ.”
After Baba told her about her hands, the granddaughter never looked at her own hands the same again.
But she remembers God reached out and took her Baba’s hands and led her Home. Now, when her own
hands are hurt or sore or when she strokes the face of her children and husband, she thinks of Baba. She
knows Baba has been stroked, caressed and held by God’s hands. She, too, wants to touch the face of God
and feel his hands upon her.
This is the kind of love which inspired our foundress Blessed Josaphata, when she allowed God to use her
to minister to the needs of her people, to alleviate their neglect and “to ennoble their hearts”. She could do
this because she inserted herself into their story. She wanted her Sisters to serve their people with dignity,
as children of God. Her life and service is an example to all of us here, “that we have nothing to lose when

when we give everything…to ennoble the hearts of our people.” (Sr. Dominic)
As board Members, it would be enriching to visit the different residents who live in our Home, for when
we come to spend time with someone here-be it a family member or close friend, or someone who has no
one to visit them-we can learn from them what they used to do, what their favourite things were, where
they loved to do-“once upon a time.” We’ve heard it said that “love is forever”, but so are memories, so
are memories. Sometimes, memories are the only bit of love that keeps them going, like this sad story:
“Once upon a time not long ago, in a certain Care Home, this letter was found:
Dear Kids,
I am happy in the new residence you have put me in. This week we actually got to go outside for an hour.
I haven’t been feeling very good this week-the friend I shared a room with died yesterday. I am coping pretty well
with my sorrows. It’s been months since you’ve visited me last, I guess you’re all pretty busy. It’s OK; I’ve learned
to use the Internet to pass the time. And the computer in the rec. room has a decent web cam. So you can
remember what I look like, I have attached a recent picture of myself. You all take care, and write to me soon.
With all my heart,
Love,
Grandma. (From the internet)
Maybe disabled people and seniors are not able to produce according to materialistic standards, but they
sure can teach us that, “Being is more important than doing.” As Henry Nouwen writes: “While I was
preoccupied with the way I was talked about or written about, the disabled quietly tell me that, “God’s
love is more important than the praise of people.” They can’t produce anything, they have no fame to be
proud of nor any award, but by their very life, they witness the radical truth that they are beloved of God
from all eternity and sent into the world with a unique mission… That’s our mission too. They teach us
to ask ourselves: would people forget us as soon as we were no longer of use to them? Are we good
because of what we do or have, or because of who we are? We are all somebody… to God.”
Sr. Dominic writes that Blessed Josaphata did not close her eyes to the difficulties, threats and
challenges; she was aware of reality, but she never wavered from her commitment. She persevered.
Yes, it is important to succeed in our Revitalization Project which is very necessary; however, much
more than that, we need to revitalize our mission here, our purpose and the hope we must give to our
residents and staff, i.e. “to ennoble the heart of our people.” Material things can never substitute for love,
gentleness, compassion and giving them their sense of dignity. This is the legacy people will
remember. This is the legacy that will carry Holy Family Home forward.
So, tonight I hope each of you feel Blessed Josaphata’s “thank you” in your heart, for giving so much of
yourselves, your talents, your expertise and care which makes the lives of our residents more meaningful.
Thank you for treating them as “special tea cups.”
Coincidently, when Sr. Josaphata was dying, one of the requests she made of the Sisters who were there
by her bed was: “When I’m gone, you all have a nice cup of tea.” As you see, Sr. Josaphata always
reminded the Sisters to cultivate human values, courtesy, service and a family spirit. (Sr. Dominic)
Some day perhaps everyone at Holy Family Home will use pretty tea cups. I’m sure it would bring a
fountain of memories and smiles to their faces. Can you picture what that would look like? Then we
could continue the story: “Once upon a time they lived happily ever after.”

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
”TO SERVE IS TO LOVE”
Spring greetings to our residents, their families, staff and volunteers! This season brings upon
us new life-flowers blossoming, birds chirping, trees and grass are greener, and so do we blossom as
we face and enter new challenges in our lives.
Although most of our major projects and events will be back in full swing in the fall, there are
some that continue throughout the summer (and all year). They are: canteen on the weekends,
community singing periodically throughout the summer months, friendly visiting, birthday visits and
some of our members assist the volunteer area by giving their time in transporting residents to medical
appointments, liturgies and activities, and also help with the Home’s special events. We are so
fortunate to have such dedicated members who continue to give of themselves throughout the whole
year!
On May 9th-15 members helped put together and delivered floral displays to 207 lady
residents of the home. Thanks to these ladies for their efforts in celebrating Mother’s Day with the
Home’s Residents. We look forward to our Father’s Day special event when we will honor the
gentlemen residents of the Home.
Recently, the Auxiliary purchased eight blood pressure machines, totaling $9,723.00 through
monies raised from our major projects. Each unit will have their own blood pressure machine which
will enable the Nurses to have a more efficient system that will provide quality care for the residents.
In 2010, the Auxiliary will be Celebrating their 50th Anniversary of dedication and caring.
There are several events being planned for that year. We hope you will join us in these events, as we
enter a new phase— “The next 50 years”. We will keep you informed of our events in future issues of
newsletters.
We are fortunate and blessed to have such a dedicated executive, committees, and members
who work together with the Home and Community to achieve the success of our projects.
HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY SUMMER!
GOD BLESS!!
