COMMON MISTAKE
• Early stage embryos are just simply a ball of cells that have not developed the essential feature of a human being.
• Food vacuole contains nutrients which are engulfed from the surroundings.
• Not until day 14 will the nervous system of embryos be developed; embryos should not experience pain.
• The nucleus contains genetic information which controls cell’s activities. The genetic
information will also be passed to the next generation after cell division.
• Large number of embryos was produced in in vitro fertilization (IVF) which they were not given the chance of life. It
would be better to use the stem cell for research so to save lives rather than killing the embryos.

Cell biology
Homeostasis — A stable environment is important to the growth of a cell. For example, cells
have to pump excess water away when they live in a freshwater environment, otherwise
excess water uptake may cause the cell to burst.
Exceptions to cell theory
Cells contain sub-cellular structures which are enclosed by a cell membrane. This helps cells
to maintain a specific set of conditions to perform specific reactions inside the cell. Cells also
contain genetic information for cells’ functions. However, there are exceptions that do not
follow this cell theory’s statement:
Striated muscle fibre — Striated muscle fibres (Figure 1.5) are cells that are responsible for the
movement of humans. They are different from other cells that they contain more than one
nucleus in the cytoplasm.
