ABOUT THE EVENTS
The upcoming POWER-GEN Africa and DistribuTECH Africa conference and exhibition will bring together regional and
international power sector leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa and around the globe to design and implement the course of
power and electricity for 2015 and beyond. The two events combine to provide end-to-end coverage of electricity generation,
transmission and distribution.
The event represents the most comprehensive conference and exhibition serving the Sub-Saharan Africa electricity sector.
Under the theme “Emerging Opportunities in the World’s Fastest Growing Continent”, POWER-GEN Africa and DistribuTECH
Africa will address key issues affecting the region’s electricity market and provide pioneering and practical solutions to expand
energy efficiency, technological excellence and implementation of smart solutions tailored to Africa’s power industry. With
conference delegates having the choice of over 35 strategic and technical sessions, this is far and away the most in-depth
conference for African power industry professionals
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to make crucial contacts with senior decision makers as over 3,000 industry professionals
convene from over 70 different countries from around the world creating the hub of Africa’s electricity industry. With
comprehensive coverage of the power needs, resources and issues facing the electricity generation and T & D industries
across sub-Saharan Africa, and over 200 exhibiting companies, this event is one not to be missed.
WHY AFRICA NOW?
The world is increasingly looking to partner with African countries to pursue opportunities created by strong growth in the
region, improved regulation, the fast pace of urbanisation, an emerging middle class with higher discretionary income, creating
demand for reliable and accessible electricity. Infrastructure development is central to this growth.
Sub-Saharan African countries are racing to meet this growing power demand in order not to hold back industrial growth and
social development. All around the continent there are initiatives underway to improve the power transmission and distribution
infrastructure, develop new power generation plants, both centralized and on a distributed generation basis. Despite these
efforts and abundant natural resources, most countries in Sub-Saharan Africa still have power deficits and systems subject
to blackouts and load-shedding. Opportunities lie in partnering with African countries in the fields of finance, technology and
engineering expertise to realize the potential that exists.
There are many examples of successful project implementation and restructuring in the power sector and it is vital that these
lessons are shared among African countries where similar challenges exist. The common goals of delivering affordable,
available and clean power exist but in regions where no existing infrastructure is in place, there is the chance to implement
new, smart and sustainable systems, based on best available technology.
In a recent report, the IEA predicts that the Sub-Saharan economy will quadruple in size by 2040 and energy demand will
grow by around 80 per cent. Power generation capacity will also quadruple with renewables growing strongly to
account for nearly 45 per cent of total Sub-Saharan capacity,
South Africa, for example, is alive to its renewable energy potential, with Frost &
Sullivan predicting that the country is set to becoming one of the fastestgrowing renewable energy markets worldwide. The Minister of
Energy has pledged that 3725 MW is to be generated from
renewable energy independent power project sources
as part of its drive towards continued uninterrupted
supply of electricity, including 100 MW
procured from small projects (max 5 MW).

We invite you to take part in an underground guided tour of
Palmiet Power Station and site, recognised as a forerunner in

of the visitors centre with interactive models and informative
displays demonstrating how electricity is gernerated. The
Palmiet Power Station is part of the Palmiet Pumped Storage
Scheme which acts not only as a hydro-electric pumped
storage scheme, but also as a water transfer scheme.
The power generated at the Palmiet Pumped Storage Scheme
is fed into the national transmission network at the Bacchus
substation near Worcester. An additional 400kV line was
commissioned during 2007 and feeds directly into the Stikland
substation near Cape Town. A special feature of the high-voltage
yard at Palmiet is the tubular low-level high-voltage busbar
system which has been used to minimise its visual impact.
The scheme comprises two new dams, the lower Kogelberg Dam
on the Palmiet River south of Grabouw and the upper Rockview
Dam on the watershed between the Palmiet and Steenbras rivers.

SEE WHAT PAST ATTENDEES HAVE TO SAY
Woodgroup – Thomas Adams
This has been a valuable show and we have made good contacts, it’s been very positive. There is a
lot of exciting stuff happening in the market, its been a good learning experience.
Minx Avabros - SAIEE
For business networking, it was excellent. I have found the event to be very inspiring. I have met great people. I would
recommend this event to any engineer who wants to make a mark in the industry. This is where you can rub shoulders with
the global industry.
Fairbanks Morse Engine – Sheila Gailloreto
The event worked well for us. Tuesday was a great day and we met good prospects and industry
professionals. PennWell does a great job - they know how to run a show.
Voith – Thierry Constantine
It was generally good for us, and we met the right people for our business. Cape Town is a also a lovely city to be in. The event
is also well organised.
Impact Energy – Wayne Bromfield
We have obtained lots of good value at the event. We have had numerous meetings and utilised the
event to train our staff. It has also been worthwhile to network with other exhibitors.
PW Power Systems - Peter Wride
We know that opportunities in Africa are growing, and it will continue to grow. It’s time to concentrate our efforts on the
Sub-Saharan African region. This is the main reason that we are here. Our participation is worthwhile.
