Palm Sunday of the Passion of Our Lord: Through the gate of palms we today
enter into the Great and Holy Week of the Church’s year. In the Gospel for the
procession we remember Jesus as he rides into Jerusalem, but liturgical
“remembering” does not mean the staging of a pageant. It is not an artificial or
slavish re-enactment of a first century event, but an invitation to participate in the
mystery of our salvation as a present reality, as people who have been baptised into
Jesus’ death and resurrection. In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples to bring to
him a tethered colt that no one has ridden. Mark’s background to this description is
probably Zechariah’s prophetic words addressed to a joyful Jerusalem: “Lo, your
king comes to you, triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” (Zech 9:9). Jesus will make his symbolic journey into
Jerusalem not on a well-trained and muscular warhorse, but on a gentle animal.
After entering to joyful, exuberant “Hosannas!” we read the Passion in Mark’s
Gospel. We juxtapose palm branches and the Passion. Praise and pain. The
enlightenment of Christianity is a God who gives himself totally. In this pouring forth
of Jesus’ life can we appreciate the entry into a new and more expansive
Jerusalem? Let us follow with a lively faith.
Show on the road: it has taken a lot of mobilisation to have our Palm Sunday and
Passion of Our Lord celebrations. Much “hail” to the facilitators of each of the
Masses, and the many volunteers who have given time to setting up the ambience of
both churches, in practice of the processions, the reading of the scriptures, and
music, and every other little detail in between. “Hosanna” to you!
Thursday 2 April is Holy Thursday. Mass of the Lord’s Supper will be celebrated
at 7.30m at Christ the King Graceville. There will be no morning Mass at St Joseph’s
Corinda this Thursday morning.

To combat variable weather patterns
affecting farmers in West Timor,
Indonesia, a local community program supported by Caritas
Australia, is teaching farmers how to terrace land & grow sustainable
crops for life. Poor soil quality & erosion meant farming was difficult
for Vinsen & his community, & in recent years, weather patterns have
become increasingly erratic. In 2010 & 2011, Vinsen’s village was hit
by heavy rains & strong winds, which destroyed crops & killed
livestock. Incomes plummeted & famine spread.
Wanting to protect his family’s future, Vinsen enrolled in the Sustainable Agriculture Program.
Respecting the environment & our role as Stewards of Creation, the program provides
training for farmers & a representative in each village helps & advises farmers on challenges.
The farmers learnt to terrace their land, helping them to stabilise against landslide, combat
erosion & harness valuable rainfall. They also learnt how to plant long-term crops in addition
to short life-span crops like vegetables, which allows them to build a stable livelihood &
survive crop fluctuations & unexpected weather changes. Vinsen’s income has increased by
25% & his family now lives without fear of food insecurity. Vinsen is now passing on his
knowledge by training others & encouraging others to take part in the program.
St Paul in his Letter to the Philippians included this hymn of the early church. We use it as the
second reading of today. It is a rich summary of what is celebrated. It is well worth pondering on
today and the week ahead.

yet Christ Jesus did not cling
to his equality with God
but emptied himself
to assume the condition of a slave,
and became as men are,
and being as all men are,
he was humbler yet,
even to accepting death,
death on a cross.
But God raised him high
and gave him the name
which is above all other names
so that all beings
in the heavens, on earth and in the underworld,
should bend the knee at the name of Jesus
and that every tongue should acclaim
Jesus Christ as Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.”

particular celebration. Ministries for all the liturgies have been finalised and are at the back of the churches. Thank you as
well for making sure you are at the practice on time.

Practices of each of the ceremonies are happening at different times during the week. Thanks for giving extra of your time so
that our liturgical celebrations run prayerfully.
Thursday: each school will be praying the Stations of the Cross. Remembering them as they walk this solemn walk of Jesus
this week.
Keep praying for our RCIA: Hawa Angaba, Haji Andadi, Hamadi Andadi, Anna Huynh, and Rahim Narimisa are preparing
for Baptism, Confirmation and first reception of Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. Nicole Chan and Kallo Kanis will celebrate
Confirmation and first reception of Eucharist. Abundant new life for the Church and our parish.
Project Compassion: bring your project compassion offerings to Holy Thursday Mass and place in the basket on the gifts
table so that they can be brought forward in the procession of the Preparation of the Gifts as our service to those who are in
need.
Feet: are to be washed during Holy Thursday Mass. The congregation will be invited to wash the feet of others. Shoes and
socks that are easy to take off are a wise idea. Stockings keep for Christmas!
Holy Land Holy Places: a leaving collection will be taken up at the end of Good Friday liturgy in support of the Holy Places in
the Holy Land.
Resurrection Party: there will be a lively celebration after the Easter Vigil. It will be even more fulfilling if you remember to
bring a plate. Many plates are welcome.

from Saturday 18 April 2015. Fr Domenico has also been appointed Priest in Residence of Holy Family Parish, Indooroopilly.
Death Row: Apart from the two Australians awaiting execution this month in Indonesia, others scheduled for execution this
are month Syofial alias Iyen bin Azwar (Indonesian), Harun bin Ajis (Indonesian), Sargawi alias Ali bin Sanusi (Indonesian),

Easter Vigil Supper
Supper will be served in the Mall at
St Joseph’s Church after the Easter Vigil next
Saturday evening. All are invited to stay,
socialise, celebrate and welcome our newly
initiated Catholics. Please bring a plate of
food to share. Thank you in anticipation!

Children’s Liturgy
Children’s Liturgy is held each fortnight during school terms at
the 9.30am Mass at Christ the King. Commencing after the
Easter holidays, the parish will also offer Children’s Liturgy at
the 8.00am Mass at St Joseph’s, on the alternate weekends.

Cay Taylor died on Palm Sunday last year and her funeral
was celebrated straight after Easter. The Family are holding
a small commemoration at the graveside the first Sunday

LITURGY SNIPPET:
Good Friday - Celebration of the Passion of the Lord
The Celebration of the Passion of the Lord on Good Friday is the
second part of the Sacred Paschal Triduum, which has begun at the
Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, reaches its high
point at the Easter Vigil, and closes on Easter Sunday evening.
The primary elements of the Celebration are the proclamation of the
Passion, the Solemn Intercessions, the Adoration of the Holy Cross
and Holy Communion. Jesus’ life-giving death is the focus in the
proclamation of the Passion and the Adoration of the Holy Cross. The
cross is an instrument of life. A variety of gestures of adoration are
encouraged, including kissing, touching and genuflecting. The Solemn
Intercessions, which conclude the Liturgy of the Word, are the
universal prayers prayed on this day. From the end of the celebration
through Holy Saturday the church is a "shrine" for the Holy Cross.
