Use your knowledge you have about organs and organ system to propose solutions for problems humans sometimes develop. The solutions you’re going to come up with must be structural solutions. ** For example, a lot of people have heart attacks. What causes heart attacks? Most of us know that exercising and eating well greatly reduces the chances of having a heart attack—however what you’re doing today is thinking about structural changes in the body that could reduce heart attacks. So in this circumstance maybe making arteries more elastic would be something that could reduce heart attacks. Choose one of these topics and create a “before and after” drawing explaining your solution. Be prepared to present this to the class. 1. Describe a change in structure or function that would reduce heart attacks. 2. Breaking bones – CRACK!!!! You are a lucky person if you get through your whole life without breaking a bone! How could you improve the body to prevent bone breakage? 3. Getting rid of urine – Have you ever had to urinate so badly, but there was no bathroom close by? How would you change the body to allow someone to go longer without urinating? 4. Wisdom teeth – Does it really involve wisdom?!?! The 4 (sometimes 2) large extra teeth in your mouth can cause some problems like pain and messing up your straight teeth! How would you change the structure of the mouth and teeth if you could? 5. Concussions – Our brain is in a very vulnerable position!! If we smack it in a certain way, it can be very detrimental to us!!!! How would you increase the strength of brain protection? 6. Torn ACLs (Ligaments) – If you move your legs in a way that the body doesn’t like or move, your ligaments can be torn. This causes extreme pain and the inability to effectively use that appendage. What change might prevent torn ligaments? 7. YOU Choose!! Name a common problem people face in their health. Make sure the topic is school appropriate.
