Big Aberdeen Action and You
Big Aberdeen is not a talking shop and it’s not about Doing
the Same Things in the Same Way and Expecting to Get
Different Results, so it doesn’t do reports. Big Aberdeen’s
aims are summed up in its strapline. There is a growing
network of people from Aberdeen’s Third Sector, public
bodies, business communities, universities etc who have
come together to “Connect Collaborate Challenge and
Change”. The latest stage of Big Aberdeen was kicked off
on 18th March.
Below are the ways that, at this next stage of Big Aberdeen, you can “Connect Collaborate Challenge and
Change” – whoever you are:

volunteering or placement opportunities and more.

ACVO and the SHMU team on the ‘So Why Don’t You….’ programme
on SHMU-FM Community Radio-99.8FM were delighted to welcome
the brilliant Future Choices as guests.
David, Helen, Liz (Bif) and Gladys were in the studio to update
listeners regarding the fantastic, important work that Future Choices
undertake. Future Choices provide a range of activities for disabled

people every week at Inchgarth Community Centre. This includes arts and crafts, boccia, board games, dominoes
and provides an opportunity for people to meet up, socialise and support each other. The charity which is totally
volunteer led continues to grow with the support of volunteers and Future Choices always greatly appreciate any
help and support people can be to the charity as volunteers, members or supporters.
Volunteering has always been a massive part of the charity and Future Choices would very much actively encourage
anyone over 16 years of age who wish to make a big difference to the lives of disabled people to contact them on

‘Mike on the Mic’ from ACVO, ‘Super Shawn’ from SHMU and ‘Avril who does A’thing’ also pack in the latest

The ACVO and SHMU team have further great special guests lined up over the next weeks to highlight their work,

Volunteering Award Success for Absafe
ACVO are delighted to announce that Absafe has been awarded the prestigious Volunteer Friendly Award.
Absafe work to advance safety, stop accidents and save lives. Their vision is to create a safe and happy North East
community and last year it opened the interactive education centre, The Safe. Volunteers are a vital part of this
in helping to teach people, of all ages, about the importance of safety in an engaging way.
The Volunteer Friendly Award is an important quality standard developed and co-ordinated nationally by Volunteer
Centre Dundee/Voluntary Action Scotland and delivered locally by ACVO, Aberdeen’s Third Sector Interface. The
Award recognises charities and community groups who are excellent at involving volunteers, lead best practice
in volunteering and enables the Third Sector to continue to offer good volunteering opportunities/experiences.
It supports volunteers in making a fantastic, essential and valuable contribution to people and communities in
Aberdeen. Through achieving the Volunteer Friendly Award Absafe has shown the strong commitment they have
to their volunteers and in continuing to develop volunteering within the organsiation.
Emma Bellu, Chief Executive of Absafe, said ‘We’re pleased to be recognised and awarded this accolade from
ACVO. We’d like to thank all our volunteers for their ongoing support and dedication in helping us to create our
vision of The Safe. Without their efforts our vision might not have been realised.’
Mike Melvin and Liz Howarth, Volunteer Friendly Assessors at ACVO added ‘Absafe makes an essential contribution
to improving safety in the North East and it is wonderful that Absafe has achieved the Volunteer Friendly Award.
It is further great testament to the superb work and dedication of staff and volunteers at Absafe’
Joyce Duncan, ACVO Chief Executive stated ‘volunteers are at the heart of all that is good - with a staggering
estimated 7.5 million hours of help contributed every year by volunteers in Aberdeen. This achievement for
Absafe is fantastic news and reflects the outstanding contribution and difference volunteers make day in day out
in Aberdeen.’

ALLIANCE publishes Self Management: Lived Experience
is Driving Change in Health and Social Care
The ALLIANCE has published its latest thinkpiece, highlighting the role of self
management and lived experience in driving change in health and social care.
The thinkpiece has been published to support the dialogue around the integration of
health and social care. It is based on our collective learning on the development of
self management in Scotland and asserts some key messages:
• Lived experience has been the central ingredient of success and must remain at the heart as we continue
to embed successful self management approaches and develop new innovations
• We need a new relationship between people and those providing support and services - this requires new
skills and changes to education, training and support of staff
• Strong connected communities are central to self management - greater investment needs to be made in
the capacity of communities to support their own wellbeing
• We need to see a whole system approach to support self management as people with long term conditions
move through the health and social care system. It is vital that health and social care integration, and the
commissioning process in particular, levers the change required
• We have made excellent progress in Scotland in terms of increasing understanding and developing ‘what
self management is’ or could be, but now need to shift up a gear so that the range of good work becomes
embedded; that greater investment is made in third sector self management support; and all groups, particularly
those most marginalised, are able to benefit from the greater control and better personal outcomes that self
management enables

Nepalese Himalayan Association - Nepal Appeal
As we all are aware from the news that a series of earthquakes have hit Nepal since the past two days, the exact casualties
are yet to be established but more than 2500 (official figure) have been declared dead and many thousand lives still to be
accounted for. Some Britons have also been reported missing in the Everest Base Camp Area due to an avalanche triggered
by earthquakes.
In this disastrous situation, we at the Nepalese Himalayan Association Scotland (NHAS) are raising funds and provide it to
the earthquake affected people in Nepal through the Prime Ministers’ Relief Fund.
We sincerely request everyone to extend their hands in this campaign and donate as little amount as they can through the
charity.
We are also tying up with Nepal Red Cross Society and JET Airways to arrange other relief materials like clothes, blankets,
medicine/first aid etc. from nearby areas and communities.

Social Enterprise Census Scotland 2015
Is your organisation trading for the benefit of others in Scotland?
Social Enterprise Academy is part of a consortium of support bodies and government
agencies that have come together to launch a high profile and ambitious study.
With support from all consortium partners, Social Value Lab are conducting a large-scale
Social Enterprise Census that will take an official count of the entire population of nonprofit distributing organisations that are carrying out some level of trading for the good of Scotland.
The Academy believes this work to be incredibly important for the sector. We appreciate your time is valuable, and this may
seem like a hassle, so to thank you for contributing, you will have the option of entering a FREE PRIZE DRAW to win an iPad
Air (there will also be weekly prizes contributed by some of Scotland’s leading social enterprises).

Varapunya Meditation Centre - Nepal Appeal
On the Saturday’s devatating earthquake in Nepal. It has been claimed over 5,000 died. The death roll is increasing every
hour. Hundreds and Thousands are being affected by this tragic incident. I would like to make a formal appeal for the funds in
aid of the victims of Nepal. There are thousands of families affected and some not yet had any sort of assistance whatsoever;
many still unaccounted for.
All money raised will organised in two parts:
1. Humanitarian support:
We are coordinating with local organisations, Viswa Shanti Vihara Kathmandu, Sukhi Hotu Nepal and Pranidhi Purna
Mahavihara, Chandragiri municipality.
2. Post Humanitarian support
The funds will be given directly to the victims.
Any donations, big or small, is highly appreciated at this time of desperate need. Thank you for those who have already

Peacock Visual Arts Gets New Lease of Light
Aberdeen arts centre Peacock Visual Arts is set to save over £1,200 a
year by upgrading the lighting in its printmaking studios, allowing artists
to work in optimum conditions.
Located in a converted hall of Aberdeen’s St Andrew’s Cathedral, Peacock
Visual Arts offers a creative space for printmaking, workshops, exhibitions
and other events. The centre made the decision to replace lighting
following expert advice from Resource Efficient Scotland, a programme
of Scottish Government funded Zero Waste Scotland. Peacock Visual
Arts also accessed funding for the upgrade through Resource Efficient
Scotland.
Finance and Admin Manager, Alison Kennedy said: “By replacing our outdated fluorescent tube lighting with LEDs, we can
save money on our energy bills while making our studios and gallery spaces more pleasant to work in for our artists.”
“The interest free loan from Resource Efficient Scotland made this upgrade affordable, and as the LED bulbs last so much
longer and are cheaper to run, we can pay this back and still save a substantial amount on replacing and maintaining the
bulbs.”
LEDs provide up to 60,000 hours of light, compared to just 10,000 for fluorescent tube lights and a meagre 1500 for
traditional lightbulbs. In addition to their greater lifespan, LEDs consume far less power than fluorescent tubes and emit
less heat, making them better for the environment. Unlike fluorescent tube lighting, the colour and intensity of LEDS can be
adapted to suit different settings, making them the perfect solution to Peacock Visual Arts’ lighting issues.
The LED installation is the first phase of the arts centre’s wider plan to increase its overall resource efficiency, with the aim
of upgrading its heating system and installing secondary glazing with further support from Resource Efficient Scotland in
the future.
Resource Efficient Scotland helps the public, private and third sectors reduce costs by using their energy, water and raw
materials more efficiently. Businesses and organisations can benefit from a suite of free online tools as well as a dedicated
advice phoneline designed to provide support in all areas of sustainability.
Through Resource Efficient Scotland, there is also an option for businesses and organisations to make a Resource Efficiency
Pledge, as a public demonstration of their commitment to the environment and which can help Scotland’s businesses save
money by using energy, water and raw materials more efficiently.

BUPA UK Launches New Charitable Foundation
Healthcare provider Bupa UK has announced the launch of the Bupa UK Foundation, a new charitable
foundation that will provide grants to support health and social care projects across the UK.
The new foundation is expected to award up to £1 million in grants this year. The funding will be
offered through clearly defined funding programmes, each of which will be focused on a different
theme. The theme of the first funding round will be announced in mid-May when the Foundation
opens to applications, with funding decisions expected in the summer.
According to the Bupa UK Foundation website, the Foundation will fund a small number of practical projects and initiatives
that aim to tackle critical challenges in health and social care, deliver public benefit and make a direct impact on people’s
health and wellbeing.
The Foundation has a strong interest in tackling health conditions that can affect everyone, including heart health, cancer,
Type 2 diabetes and dementia. It will also focus on important factors that underpin good health, such as mental health,
ageing and wellness, the prevention of long-term conditions, and behaviour change to improve health and wellbeing.
The Foundation is currently inviting interested groups to comment and provide their ideas on:
• Themes or challenges they would like to see the Foundation tackle through its funding programmes.
• Its approach to grant-making and the kinds of projects and initiatives it plans to fund.

Social Investment Scotland Launches Fund to Tap Wealthy
Investors’ Appetite to ‘Do Good’
For the first time in Scotland, UK investors will be able to invest their money in a pioneering fund
for social good. Social Investment Scotland are aiming to raise £500k from UK investors by utilising
the government’s new Social Investment Tax Relief scheme (SITR).
The SITR scheme has been established in order to ‘unlock’ an estimated £500 million from private investors, by offering them
a tax-related incentive. Recent research by Ipsos Mori also highlighted an unmet appetite for social investment amongst
high-net-worth Individuals, who wanted their money to ‘do good’. SIS Community Capital is a response to that demand.

Community Capacity Building and Resilience Fund
The Scottish Government’s Community Capacity & Resilience Fund pilot funding scheme aims to support innovative and
creative projects which increase the capacity of frontline third sector organisations to mitigate the impact of welfare reform,
promote social inclusion, and combat inequality.
Grants of £1,000 - £5,000 are available to organisations with an annual income of £200,000 or less in most recent accounts.

The Creative Breaks Funding Programme
Creative Breaks provides grants to third sector organisations working in Scotland to
increase the range and choice of short break opportunities for carers of adults, kinship
carers, young carers and the people they care for.
The programme will distribute around £1 million of Scottish Government funding in 2015.
The deadline for applications is Noon, Friday 8th May 2015.
Interested?
The application form and guidance notes are on the Shared Care Scotland website including information about the fund.
You can apply for grant either to develop short break services or for funding to establish your own small grant scheme for
carers so that carers can then pay for the short break that’s right for them.
Our maximum grant is £50,000 for one year. Successful applications will receive their grant in September 2015.
Funding for National Voluntary Youth
Organisations in Scotland
The National Voluntary Youth Work Organisations Support Fund is
currently accepting applications for funding.
The Scottish Government has established this fund to support National Voluntary Youth Organisations who are contributing
to the achievement of the National Youth Work Strategy 2014-2019 ambition that ‘all young people, in every part of Scotland,
should have access to high quality and effective youth work practice’.
Applications are accepted from all national voluntary youth work organisations involved in the management and delivery of
youth work across Scotland. Please note that local branches of national voluntary youth organisations or voluntary youth
organisations that do not have a national remit may not apply.
The funding is aimed at activities that lead to one or more of the following outcomes being achieved:
• Improved support and engagement of volunteers.
• Increased access to workforce development opportunities for paid staff and/or volunteers.
• Increased access to leadership development opportunities for senior managers and/or senior volunteers.
• Improved strategic leadership.
• Improved communication and partnerships with local authorities supporting the delivery of the national outcomes for
young people.
Projects must be delivered between 1 June 2015 and 31 March 2016.
There is no lower limit for funding, but groups seeking in excess of £50,000 should contact the Development Manager at
YouthLink Scotland, which is administering the Fund, prior to submitting an application.
The deadline for applications is 11 May 2015 (5pm).

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
2 Day Course
ABERDEEN/ABERDEENSHIRE DATES FOR 2015
ASIST is the most widely practised suicide intervention skills training in the world with over 1 million people having attended
the course. The two-day interactive workshop is facilitated by at least 2 highly experienced trainers who will create a safe
environment in which to explore how anyone, regardless of their background or previous experience, can help someone
stay safe from suicide.
This course aims to help participants from within Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire:
• recognise invitations for help
• reach out and offer support
• review the risk of suicide
• apply a suicide intervention model
• link people with community resources

A limited number of spaces are still available for this year’s City of Aberdeen Baker Hughes 10K Running Festival
on Sunday 17th May to raise money for Aberdeen Cyrenians.
Runners, walkers and joggers of all abilities are invited to take part on the day, to help raise vital funds for people
across the North-East who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or affected by homelessness in any way.
The event will start from the Beach Boulevard on the Sunday morning and follow a route round the harbour and
along the Beach Esplanade before coming back through the city to the dedicated charity village. Entertainment will also be provided on
the day, including sports massages for participants and a fun-filled children’s village.
Remaining spaces cost £24 and are strictly limited - when they’re gone they’re gone!

Barnardo’’s Aberdeen Vacancies
Barnardo’s has a number of services across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire that work with
young people and their families.
The BAYI Service works across Aberdeenshire Council to provide a service working
with young people within the local authority who are at risk of or involved in offending
behaviours. The service is targeted towards the Prevention and Early Intervention stages of the Whole Systems Approach
and delivers a timely, appropriate and effective range of interventions to meet the needs and address the risks presented by
the service users
The Connect Service is a busy and dynamic service that supports young people and their families within the Aberdeen area.
This innovative service supports young people who present with significant vulnerabilities and risks. The service engages
with young who are involved in risk taking behaviours; including offending, sexually harmful behaviours and or who are
missing from home. The service further offers support and interventions around leaving home and preventing homelessness
which is supported by volunteer mentoring.
The Linksfield Service is an established residential Unit in Aberdeen City. The Unit provides, high quality, therapeutic
placements for up to six young people (aged 8 to 12 at point of referral) with complex behaviours. An additional sleep-in
allowance is also paid for residential posts.

The role of Chief Executive is crucial in leading and developing the strategic vision for CLAN and building its
operational capacity to deliver a broad range of services. You will be a visionary leader, an ideas person and a
dynamic manager of people.
You will have a genuine commitment to, and sympathy with CLAN’s objectives, maintaining its ethos and vision
and influencing stakeholders positively in order to achieve results that are in the best interest of CLAN Cancer

will include responsibility for the day to day management of the service including monitoring, evaluating and continually
improving the service as well as line management of a small integrated team of staff.
Applicants should possess excellent organisational, communication and IT skills, with a good working knowledge of Microsoft
Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint. You will have the ability to work on your own initiative, as well as part of a team. You
will be confident at liaising with external stakeholders and building new networks. You should have experience of managing
people and improving performance.

or volunteer engagement and an ability to communicate with and influence people. You will be computer literate.

Childline volunteer counsellors provide a vital service to children and young people who contact the helpline by
telephone or the Childline website. As a trained volunteer, Childline Counsellors are able to respond to children
and young people in a variety of ways that meet their needs at the time they contact. This includes listening and
speaking to children and young people on the telephone; via a live 1-2-1 online conversation, or via email.
Full training is provided and Childline Supervisors always work alongside counselling volunteers giving support,
advice and direction in working with sensitive issues such as bullying, sexual abuse, physical abuse, self harm and
family relationships.
Our next volunteer counsellor training starts on the 2nd August 2015 and we welcome any enquiries and

Volunteers make a huge difference. In Aberdeen it is estimated around 52,000
people volunteer, contributing around 4.4 million hours every year. The economic
impact of volunteering to Aberdeen is thought to be a staggering £67.3 million
annually.
With so many opportunities there has never been a better time to get involved
in volunteering. ACVO exists to involve, represent, support and develop not-forprofit organisations by finding business skilled volunteers to fill gaps in a charity’s
personnel base. The hours of volunteering are flexible to fit in with a volunteer’s

ACVO’S BUSINESS SKILLED VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME
The Business Skilled Volunteers Programme operates within the Aberdeen city boundary and aims to match
business skilled volunteers and professionals to organisations requiring specific skills, allowing the organisation
to expand its range of activities. Many organisations desperately need additional resources but lack the time
or finances needed to recruit suitably skilled workers. Organisations are in constant need of volunteers with
skills in areas such as Accountancy, Business Planning, Human Resources and staffing issues, Information

Volunteer Opportunity – Join Dementia Research
Are you interested in research? Do you have access to an up-to-date computer, and are you comfortable using on-line
resources? Would you like to help people join the UK’s major dementia research register?
Introduction
Join Dementia Research (JDR) – www.joindementiaresearch.nihr.ac.uk - is a national NHS web-based initiative, which aims to
be a central register of people who want to volunteer for dementia research. Individuals are then “matched” to potentially
suitable research projects. Alzheimer Scotland is providing support to the JDR service across Scotland and is now planning
to base the JDR Helpdesk service alongside the current Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Helpline service.
Opportunity
Alzheimer Scotland is seeking volunteers with excellent people skills who would be able to support those without their own
internet access to register on Join Dementia Research. The volunteer will be comfortable using a computer whilst on the
phone. Each registration takes between 20 and 40 minutes, with more time required if the individual being registered has
dementia.
Full training on the JDR system will be given, as well as speaking and listening skills training. The Alzheimer Scotland
Dementia Helpline staff will be available to support volunteers in this interesting initiative.
