The Anglo in numbers
The “Anglo European School” is a strange name
for a comprehensive school. To the uninitiated we
are a rather quirky school, funded by the European
Union which runs English language courses for
students from overseas! On arrival people might
expect some sophisticated architecture as if it were
the Berlaymont Building in Brussels which is the
Headquarters of the European Commission. None
of this, of course, is true. The Anglo is a state
school for boys and girls. Readers will be familiar
with the unique nature of the school which we
have proudly presented over the years. It is a
school that uses data to self-evaluate and improve,
but it is its underlying values that drive it.
Readers will also be familiar with the data that is
published to enable comparison with other
schools—the 5A*-C including English and
Mathematics, for instance. What follows is another
look at data which we hope will shed new light on
this school for its staff, parents and students. It is
presented as a series of questions, the answers (the
data) is presented on Page 2 — upside down of
course!

We hope this can be treated as a family fun activity
and shed new light on the school for our students,

The Anglo European School has been appointed as
a GLP Expert Centre. The GLP programme is
aimed at creating a national network of likeminded Primary, Secondary and Special schools.
We will act as a learning hub to help schools in the
local area deliver effective teaching and learning
about international development and global issues.
In doing this it helps schools enhance their
Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural provision and
evidence
of
this
provision has recently
become an important
aspect
of
Ofsted
inspections.
Where are they now?
Sam Marks (2004-2011) has had a varied music
career from playing in piano bars in London to
working on cruise ships. He is currently studying at
Berklee College of Music in Boston and is in a band
called
“Yankee
and
the
Foreigners”.

Ola Awosika (2002-2009) currently works for “The
Challenge” as an Assistant Graduate Manager. She
lists one of her achievements since leaving school as
Youth Campaigner with the Cabinet Office.

James Tunningley (2007-2011) was recently
selected to represent Oxford University Blues against
Cambridge in the 131st Varsity football match.

Osayimwense Omotayo (2005-2008) is currently
working as a Credit Specialist for American Express
after
serving
in
the
Austrian
Army.

Erin Robinson (2011-2013), after becoming an au
pair in France, now attends York University.
Lauren Sanchez-Jinks (2002-2009) gained a Degree
of Master of Arts in Psychology 2.1 at the University
of Aberdeen.
Rebecca Baker (2007-2012) has completed an
Apprenticeship with the Central Training Group in
Hairdressing.
Laura Cooper (2004-2010) achieved a First in her
final exams reading Modern Languages (German)and
was awarded the Mary Somerville Prize from
Somerville College, Oxford.
John Wheatley (2007-2009) graduated from the
Department of Materials at Imperial College London
with a Master of Engineering degree in Materials
Science and Engineering achieving a First Class
Honours.

Co-operative Trust
We have received a donation from the Co-operative
Star of £142.50.
This is the result of the
accumulative points from the Co-op cards. Thank
you for your continued support with this scheme; as
you can see every little helps. If you want more

Thanks to all those who donated their bikes to
support the Bikes to Africa charity. We managed to
collect 50 bikes!
World Academy of Sport
The school has been officially recognised by the
World Academy of Sport as being a place which
provides
a
supportive,
athlete-friendly
environment for elite athletes. We are delighted
with this recognition which is a vindication of the
hard work and success of our PE department as
well as the school as a whole. We are the only
school in the country to be accorded this status so
far and currently one of only 7 worldwide.
This initiative came from the International
Baccalaureate Organisation who launched it
during the 2012 London Paralympics. It enables
IB students to take three years to complete their
Diploma instead of two. We used the idea to
introduce our own Elite Performer Programme
covering all those who perform at a national/subinternational standard or equivalent. It involves
the school allocating a mentor, liaising with
coaches and agreeing certain flexibilities with the
student. The programme is co-ordinated by Miss
Dempster.

Student News
Ryan Luke U6TP and Bryce Luke U6AK r ecently
competed in the Zurich European Karate Championships,
with Ryan achieving 7th place.
The AES Gym Club took part in the annual Essex
Schools’ Gymnastics Competition at Chelmsford Gym
Club. Each gymnast had to perform a floor routine and 2
vaults. After many early morning practices every
gymnast rose to the occasion and performed fantastically.
Our senior boys team won Bronze. Many of the
gymnasts choreographed their own floor routine and
some of the senior team assisted with the coaching of the
junior teams. A sterling collaborative achievement!

have
retained
the
shield at the
Brentwood
Natasha Zossimova 11E, Sara Somogyi 11E, Tereza Kolacna
district gala for
L6TP & Nikita Smith L6MG
the 5th year
running! The sixth form girls team also came 1st at the
Mid-Essex School Sports Association (MESSA) gala this
year. To have won the gala 5 years running in this
category is a great achievement beating teams from the
Brentwood and Chelmsford area. Year 8 and 10 girls’
teams also won, so a great time for
girls’ swimming teams at Anglo!
Every term artwork is chosen to be
hung in the Headteachers’ office.
This term, the work of Manon
Davies L6LK was selected.
Our Year 7 Cross Country team
competed in the Brentwood Schools’ Cross Country
Championships achieving first place as the overall
winning team. Congratulations to Michal Zalewski
10E for finishing first in his race.
Congratulations to Serena Yau 8T for winning the
First Bus Poster Competition. Her winning entry will
be able to be viewed on First Buses very soon.

As part of the
Anglo’s celebration
of the Chinese New
Year,
Year
7
students enjoyed a
week of Chinese
cultural activities.
They participated in paper cutting, calligraphy,
tai chi, fan dancing and Chinese music classes,
as well as learning about China in Geography
lessons, talking about the Chinese New Year in
language lessons and completing Chinese
themed Maths puzzles.
Congratulations to Holly Bolton 8T, Serena
Yau 8T and Pippa Bloom 8T for their entr y
into the Step into the NHS Competition last
term which was highly commended by the
judges. This is a brilliant achievement as over
1,700 entries were received.
Our annual Eisteddfod once again showcased
the amazing talent of all our students from
dramatic monologues, hilarious comedy
sketches,
dancing
and
music.
Congratulations to Lois Brisley U6LK our
Palm D’Or winner; Leanna Lucas L6SW who
received the Callum Reilly Award for Most
Notable Performance; Ed Tunningley U6AK
for his Special Contribution to the Eisteddfod;
Charlie Thurston U6AK gained the
Headteachers’ Award for all his work
backstage on the lights and Sam
Wolstenholme 10A for winning the Most
Memorable Performance.

successfully
campaigning to gain support from the staff,
the Sixth Form and, for the first time, the
whole school. Some great manifestos and
broadcasts were produced by all of the
candidates involved. They will be assisted by
our new Deputy Head Boy, Jaymey McIvor
L6AK and Izzy Dogliani L6MG.

Visitors to the School
Director of Sixth Form, Mr Stuart Newton, and
lower sixth politics student, Jaymey McIvor,
organised a political debate for the lower and upper
sixth students. Representatives from all the major
parties were present and a lively debate took place
on topics such as immigration, education and the
economy. Students were asked to complete a poll
before the debate began indicating which party they
would be voting for in the General Election and
then again at the end of the debate to see if there
was a shift in the student’s voting choice. Jaymey
was interviewed on BBC Essex the same day.
In addition, President of YouGov, Peter Kellner,
visited the school to speak to sixth form students on
a number of topics including compulsory voting,
changing the electoral system, how to reform
politics, state funding of parties and beyond!

Fundraising
Year 8 took part in a “Giving Nation” fundraising
event as part of their Citizenship work. The students
ran stalls and games at lunchtime in order to raise
money for the charities, Amnesty International,
Barnados and Rainforest Concern. They r aised
over £600.
£312 has been raised for the Marie Curie Cancer
Fund fr om the sale of button daffodils.
The Amnesty Youth Group held an AmnesTea
party in school to raise money for Amnesty
International. Freshly baked cakes and cookies were
available to purchase during lunchtime and the
group raised £230.
Non Uniform Days: In addition to our ongoing
support of the Aloysian Boys Home in Mangalore,
we are now supporting the education of girls in
Morocco through Education for All.
Donations
Many thanks for the donations we have received for
our Music Department which have included a
piano, two keyboards, guitar equipment and a
keyboard amp. We always welcome donations of
musical instruments. If you have something that
you think the students might be able to benefit
from, please do contact the school office.
Author Jonathan Stroud visited to speak to Year 7
students about his writing and series of books,
Lockwood & Co, which focus on a London psychic
detection agency. An exciting talk that engaged
and entertained Year 7 was followed by a book
signing session where students were able to
purchase a book and have it personally signed by
the author. His books were very well received by
our students and we hope that his visit will
encourage students to become lifelong readers.
Jonathan also commented on how well behaved our
students were calling them a credit to the school.
We hosted a representative from the Department of
Education, Jane Sallans to undertake a 3-day
Immersion Programme. The visit was designed to
be different from the usual visits to schools. Jane
met staff, attended meetings and fully immersed
herself into the day to day workings of the school.
She also attended our Eisteddfod. “It has been an
invaluable experience for me to see school life from
within and learn about the uniqueness of AES. I
will remember it fondly” .
Staff Update
We say goodbye to the following teaching staff this
term: Lin Squires, Head of Technology (after 23
years), Arti Nischal, (teacher of Technology),
Amardeep Sirha, (Subject Leader Business
Studies), Warren Palmer (teacher of Citizenship) and
Helen Trenoweth (teacher of Religious Studies)
Joining us after Easter are: Rachel Cutteridge,
Chemistry teacher and Nick Hills, Citizenship and
Religious Studies teacher.
Congratulations to three members of staff on the birth
of their babies: Jenny Box, Michelle Ibbotson and Jo
Follett.
David Barrs, Co-Headteacher, who serves on the IB
Heads’ Council as the UK representative has just been
nominated as the Chair of the Council and as a result
now sits on the Board of Governors. He chaired his
first meeting in Cardiff in March and in April will
attend his first board meeting in Bethesda, US. He is
putting the Anglo well and truly on the international
map.
