Albany Dougherty Historic Preservation Commission 2014
Albany Dougherty Historic Preservation Commission
2014-2015 Art Competition & Exhibit
May is National Historic Preservation month and the theme is “This Place Matters”. Preservation
Month was designed to raise awareness about the power historic preservation has to protect and
enhance our homes, neighborhoods and communities –the places that really matter to us. The
Historic Preservation Commission is sponsoring an art contest and exhibition for artists of all ages,
to promote education and awareness of local historic properties.
This contest is an invitation for artists to explore and appreciate Albany’s significant historic
resources by portraying a historic property in their preferred artistic medium. Buildings are
considered historic if they are at least 50 years old (built in 1964 or before). Artists are
encouraged to depict a historic building or site that has personal meaning to them.
The competition will allow entries in adult and youth (17 and under) categories. There is no fee for
entry. Deliver artwork to be judged by Wednesday, April 29, 2015 to the Albany Area Arts
Council. Entries will be judged by representatives of the Albany Area Arts Council and an awards
presentation and reception will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at the Albany Area Arts
Council. Ribbons will be presented to the 2nd and 3rd place winners in both categories. The 1st
place grand prize artwork for each category will be a $250 purchase award. The artwork will
become part of Thronateeska Heritage Center’s permanent collection.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping the Historic Preservation Commission focus attention on
significant historic resources through talented artists in our area.

Albany Dougherty Historic Preservation Commission
2014-2015 Art Competition & Exhibit Rules
Purpose: May is National Historic Preservation Month and provides an
opportunity to celebrate the diverse and unique heritage of our community and
the places that really matter to us! The Art Contest and Exhibition is an education
and awareness project of the Albany Dougherty Historic Preservation
Commission to encourage participation and appreciation of historic resources
and the arts and to recognize accomplishments with awards and public
awareness of our local artists.
Historic resources are buildings at least 50 years old (built in 1964 or before).
Contest and Exhibition Rules:
1. Everyone is invited to participate in our local contest. Artwork, portraying a
historic Albany resource, will be judged and be eligible for awards. There will
be two (2) categories: Adults (18 years and older) and Youth (17 years and
younger). The first prize artwork in each category is a purchase award ($250 for
Adult Grand Prize and $250 for Youth Grand Prize) and will be on permanent
display at Thronateeska Heritage Museum in Albany.
2. Artists may submit two works of art in each medium with a maximum of three
entries per person.
3. Artwork will be accepted from the following media: painting, drawing, sculpture,
ceramics, printmaking, photography, metal work, graphic design, mixed media
and crafts. ALL WORK MUST BE ORIGINAL. Oil or acrylic paintings may be
framed; two-dimensional work on paper should be matted and framed
appropriately.
4. Each entry should be marked on the back of the artwork for the judging (title of
work / artist’s name and contact information). This is critical to insure the
appropriate recognition and safe return of the artwork.
5. Ribbons will be presented to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners for youth and adults.
A cash award of $250 will be presented to the 1st place grand prize in each
category (youth and adult) and will be a purchase award permanently displayed
in the Thronateeska Heritage Museum.
6. All artwork will be on display at the Albany Area Arts Council from May 7 through
June 4, 2015. Artwork (other than the grand prize purchase awards) will be
available for sale during this time – at artist’s discretion and in compliance with
Albany Area Arts Council regulations. Artwork must be picked up on June 5,
2015 between 10:00am and 2:00 pm.
