POSITION VACANT – CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Background to the Position
AMA (ACT) Limited is looking to employ a suitably qualified and experienced Chief Executive Officer
to oversee its strategic and management objectives.
AMA (ACT) Limited is the peak body for registered medical practitioners and medical students in the
ACT. It has a membership of approximately 700 medical practitioners (across a range of disciplines
and practice models); and medical students.
AMA (ACT) Limited is a company limited by guarantee.
The Role
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) reports to a Board of nine directors, all of whom are registered
medical practitioners.
The objectives of the AMA (ACT) cover three principal domains: the Association; the Membership;
and the Community
The CEO is expected to provide advice to the Board on all issues pertaining to achieving the aims and
objectives of the AMA (ACT) in its role as the principal organisation representing the medical
profession and advocating for patients in the ACT now and into the future.
At the same time, the CEO is expected to provide leadership to the management team and to
effectively manage the secretariat to ensure that Association resources are used as effectively and
efficiently as possible, whilst at the same delivering on the strategic objectives. The CEO will ensure
that the management team is supported and that AMA (ACT) remains an “employer of choice”.
Additionally, it is expected that the CEO will continue to develop AMA (ACT) so that it remains
relevant to its membership. This will require development and maintenance of dynamic external and
internal relations, targeted business and operational deliverables, and sound resource management
– human, financial and technological. The key results areas include: ensuring financial viability;
leading; representing; informing and serving the profession; publishing “Canberra Doctor” and other
resource publications; developing relationships with other health professionals and stakeholders;
promoting good health and health care; promoting ethical standards amongst the medical
profession and promoting the profession as an asset to the community.
The CEO
Candidates for the position will be expected to demonstrate a range of skills and competencies and
ideally will draw upon experience from previous high level management roles. Preference is to have
worked within a health environment with understanding of and experience in the dual and separate
roles of governance and management.
Of importance are skills in financial management and the ability to manage limited resources
effectively and to a budget; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; excellent writing skills;
experience in working with a Board; well-developed relationship building skills to nurture existing
relationships and create new mutually agreeable relationships with external and internal
stakeholders (these will include members of the profession, politicians, organisations and their
leaders): manage staff; and the ability to identify needs of membership and develop strategies to
grow membership and corporate partners for the benefit of members.
Qualifications and competencies
It is anticipated that the CEO will hold tertiary qualifications in management or a related discipline
and hold qualifications in corporate governance or membership of a professional body promoting
corporate governance excellence (eg, Australian Institute of Company Directors).
Qualifications and/or experience in employment and/or employee relations will be highly regarded.
Experience
It is anticipated that the CEO will have had extensive experience in leadership of a management
team either as CEO or COO or experience that underpins and encourages progression to a CEO role.
It is also anticipated that the CEO will have had extensive experience in reporting to a Board and
deep understanding of best practice governance as the CEO will also be appointed as Company
Secretary.

It is expected that the CEO develops empathy with the cause and commitment of AMA (ACT) Limited
and its directors and members and their commitment to patients and community.
It is expected that the CEO has high levels of personal integrity, intellectual capacity, understanding
of the constraints and opportunities of working for a not-for-profit; capacity to see opportunities to
innovate to increase the revenue base; and has a tolerant and courteous demeanour.
