Prof. Christopher Krupa Publishes New Book
Prof. Krupa's new co-edited (with David Nugent of Emory University) volume, State
Theory and Andean Politics: New Approaches to the Study of Rule, has just been
published by The University of Pennsylvania Press. Focusing on the everyday, extraofficial,
and frequently invisible or partially concealed permutations of rule in the lives of Andean
people, the essays in this collection explore the material and cultural processes by which
states come to appear as real and tangible parts of everyday life. Includes contributions
from ten Andeanist scholars and theoretical engagements from Akhil Gupta and Gyanendra

AGSU Spring Wine & Cheese April 7
Hello Anthropology Colleagues,
Now that this semester is finally coming to a close it is our pleasure to invite you to the AGSU Spring Wine and
Cheese taking place Tuesday April 7th, from 4-7pm at the Prenup Pub. The Prenup Pub is located at 191
College, at the corner of Henry about 2 blocks from the Department and we will be on the second floor. They
have 70 beers on tap, over 20 wines available by the glass and tasty appetizers. As well, we are inviting everyone to
feel free to bring a sweet treat for all to share.
So join us...this is a great opportunity to unwind from a challenging semester and a busy school year by having
some food and drinks (2 free) on the AGSU and The Department of Anthropology. No dress code. We hope to

Prof. Shawn Lehman Awarded FAS Germany/Europe Funding
Congratulations to Prof. Shawn Lehman for his successful application to the Faculty
of Arts and Science Germany/Europe Fund to formalize a research collaboration
with lemur biologists at the Institut für Zoologie, Stiftung Tierärztliche Hochschule
in Hannover, Germany. The collaboration will provide international experience and
innovative programming to Anthropology graduate students.

2015 AAA Leadership Fellows Program
The AAA Leadership Fellows Program provides a unique
opportunity for anthropologists early in their careers to learn about
leadership opportunities within the association. Each year a group
of three to five fellows will be paired with a mentor chosen from
among AAA leadership. Mentors are available to fellows
throughout the year to answer questions related to AAA. Fellows
shadow their mentors at the AAA Annual Meeting in meetings of
the Executive Board, Association Committees, and Section
Committees. In addition, fellows are invited to attend the AAA
Donors Reception and a Leadership Fellows Social bringing
together past and present cohorts of fellows. Applications must be
submitted by April 6.

The Sophie Coe Prize in
Food History 2015
The Sophie Coe Prize is
the longest-running and
most generous prize for
writing in food history in
the English language,
awarding £1,500 to the

In 2015, our 20th anniversary year, the winner will be chosen – as
usual - by an anonymous panel of distinguished judges and awarded
to the author of an original, informative article or essay on any
aspect of food history. Published and unpublished work may be
submitted. If the former, it must have been published within the last
12 months of the submission deadline. If the latter, it must be in
immediately publishable form.The submission deadline is 1st May

2015 Anthony Leeds Prize in Urban Anthropology
The Leeds Prize is awarded each year by the Society for
Urban/National/Transnational/Global Anthropology (SUNTA)
for the outstanding book in urban, national and/or transnational
anthropology published in 2014. The prize is named in honor of
the late Anthony Leeds, a distinguished pioneer in urban
anthropology. The prize is awarded to a book that uses
ethnographic data from complex, transnational, urban societies in
methodological innovative ways. The goal of the prize is to
showcase model studies that advance the research agenda of urban
anthropologists. The prize committee is chaired by Robert
Rotenberg and includes Danny Hoffman, winner of the 2012 prize
for “The War Machines (Duke University Press), Daniel
Goldstein, winner of the 2013 prize for “Outlawed” (Duke
University Press) and Mun Young Cho, winner of the 2014 prize
for “The Specter of “The People”: Urban Poverty in Northeast
China” (Cornell University Press). This year’s deadline for

Undergraduate Teaching of Anthropology
Celebrate your favorite anthropology teacher by nominating her or
him for the 2015 AAA/Oxford Teaching Award! Take advantage

For more than 25 years, the Society for Cultural Anthropology has
been distinguished by having the largest graduate student
membership of any section of the American Anthropological
Association. Recognizing that doctoral students are among the most
experimentally minded and often among the best read of
ethnographic writers, the SCA wants to know: Who is on your
reading horizon? This spirit gave rise to the Cultural Horizons
Prize, awarded yearly by a jury of doctoral students, for the best
article appearing in Cultural Anthropology during the preceding
year. The 2014 Horizons Prize was awarded to Kevin Lewis
O'Neill (U of T) for his article, “Left Behind: Security, Salvation,
and the Subject of Prevention”Cultural Anthropology 28, no. 2
(November 2013): 204-26.
The SCA is soliciting doctoral graduate students to serve as
volunteers on the prize jury. The work involves reading through the
2014 volume of Cultural Anthropology over the summer, and
delivering a collective decision by early August. Each member of the
jury will receive a modest honorarium to help defray costs of
attending the 2015 AAA meetings, in order to present the award to
the recipient.
For the selection of the jury, we aim to cover the widest range of
interests consonant with SCA membership, as well as SCA's spirit
that prioritizes interdisciplinarity, ethnography, theoretical
innovation, and literariness. To apply, please send:

-A short (one paragraph) note of recommendation from a
dissertation committee member.

2015 Ruth Benedict Book Prize
The Association for Queer Anthropology (AQA) is proud to
announce the 2015 Ruth Benedict Book Prize Competition for
outstanding anthropological scholarship on a lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender, or queer topic.The Ruth Benedict Book Prize is
presented each year at the AAA's annual meeting to acknowledge
excellence in a scholarly book written from an anthropological
perspective about a topic that engages issues and theoretical
perspectives relevant to LGBTQ studies. The Prize is awarded in
each of two separate categories, one for a single-authored
monograph and another for an edited volume.
To nominate a work, please submit one copy of the book or edited
volume to each of the four committee members, with the author or
editor’s name, mailing address, and email address, and telephone
number printed clearly on a separate cover letter indicating that it is
a submission for the Ruth Benedict Book Prize. All submissions

Festival is organized by the students
of Ethnology and Cultural

Zadar in cooperation with the

ethnographic film and deepening the knowledge of this area. We
believe that the rich program which combines lectures by experts,
discussions, workshops, presentation of student ethnographic films
and discussions with the authors of films, create an inspiring,

Collaborative Arctic Summer School in Epidemiology
(CASE), August 3-7, 2015, Yellowknife
This summer school will focus on environmental stressors in the
High North and the challenges involved in studying human health
effects of such external factors.
The main goal is to prepare young scientists for particular
challenges related to conducting science in the High North. Other
goals are to create an arena where these young scientists may
interact with senior scientists who are experienced in High North
issues, in addition to building networks with other international
students that have similar challenges. Throughout the week, senior
scientists will be available to supervise on specific requests the
students might have.The main topics of the course will be human
health related to environmental impacts, lifestyle choices, food
security, climate change and practical statistical methods.

Field School Workshop
The aim of the workshop is to gain
and exchange experiences in
anthropological and interdisciplinary
research on topics concerning
beekeeping.
Goals
• Develop a research topic in cooperation with the other
participants of the workshop
• Enhance your participant observation skills through
ethnographic fieldwork.
• Find access to your field and collect and align your
primary data.
• Explore the potential of interdisciplinary methods and
different ways of representation.
• Contribute to an anthropological publication on

The Jean Monnet Summer School is organised with the support of
the Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP) of the European Union.
It offers an intensive, interactive and interdisciplinary approach to
the study of the complex issues of security and justice in Europe,
including amongst others the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice
(AFSJ) (formerly 'Justice and Home Affairs') and the Common
Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), as well as the impact of these
policies on fundamental rights and liberties. It examines the latest
empirical developments and theoretical approaches, in addition to
featuring research methods and general doctoral training sessions.
In addition, all participants will present their research project and
will receive constructive feedback on it. They will also be
encouraged to contribute to the two main publications related to
the Summer School on the basis of their research project.
The Summer School is intended for students of any discipline
writing or planning to write a PhD thesis on any topic related to
justice and security in Europe, including amongst others any aspect
of the European Union's Area of Freedom, Security and Justice
(AFSJ) and the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP).

Experimental Archaeology & Beer Production, July 29August 19, 2015, Cyprus
HARP will be running an Experimental Archaeology Field School
in the village of Kissonerga, Cyprus that aims to recreate an
installation that was likely used for beer production in the Middle
Bronze Age. The original structure has been excavated as part of a
research excavation run by Dr. Lindy Crewe of the University of
Manchester since 2007. The site of Kissonerga-Skalia is a Middle
Bronze Age settlement that has revealed a series of domestic
dwellings that were superseded by a phase of monumental
construction. The village of Kissonerga is incredibly rich in
archaeological sites with some of the world’s oldest Neolithic wells
at Kissonerga-Mylouthkia, the Chalcolithic settlement of
Kissonerga-Mosphillia, as well as the settlement of Skalia.
The aims of the Field School are to build a fourth installation using
slightly different construction techniques than in previous seasons,
and to produce beer using methods likely dating back to the Bronze
Age. The 2015 kiln will be used to dry malted grains before the
grains are crushed using traditional techniques. The crushed malt
will then be used to make beer using locally sourced ingredients and
traditional brewing techniques. Participants will also get the
opportunity to excavate the remains of the 2013 and 2014 kiln in
order to learn excavation skills and test our excavation hypotheses
for the kiln. Further info here.
