Title:
PRACTICE SUPERVISOR
Accountable To: PRACTICE MANAGER
Position Summary:
The Family Help Trust provides intensive home visiting services targeted at families with multiple
difficulties. The intention of services is to reduce the risks of child abuse, poor health and social
outcomes for children and to increase family functioning for enrolled families. This is achieved
through the provision of a broad base system of family support which is delivered by professional
Social Workers. The referrals are usually received from a third party such as Child Youth and Family
or other health and welfare professionals. ‘Self-referrals’are uncommon.
Family Help Trust provides Understanding Behaviour, a parenting programme within the home
which is delivered to those families identified by FHT social workers as benefitting from extra
support in this area.
Family Help Trust hosts and delivers the HIPPY (Home Instruction Programme for Parents and
Youngsters) at three sites around Christchurch. The HIPPY programme is managed and monitored
nationally by Great Potentials who are based in South Auckland.
Included in the Practice Supervisors role is to
1. provide professional supervision and clinical leadership to designated Social Work team members.
2. achieve the provision of quality control in the area of service provision and its delivery to families
of FHT,
3. ensure training and professional standards are achieved by clinical staff.
4. monitor clinical staff to ensure they are working within the systems and processes that enable FHT
to achieve success audits by external agencies.
5. provide assistance to the clinical staff to develop and achieve professional development plans and
CPD logs.
6. provide additional supervision and training for social workers who deliver the ‘Understanding
Behaviour’ Programmes
7. assist to maintain the clinical integrity of the ‘Understanding Behaviour’ Programme and any
further development of the Programme.
The Practice Supervisor will consult with and be accountable to the Practice Manager regarding
clinical practice issues and will assist the Practice Manager to further develop service delivery and
social work practice within the agency.
The Practice Supervisor will provide back up for the Practice Manager as required from time to time.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
A qualification in Social Work recognized by the Social Work Registration Board and membership of
ANZASW
Preference for a further qualification in Supervision
Experience in the areas of Care and Protection, working with at risk families.
Demonstrate significant experience and training in the provision of supervision.
To be culturally competent, and committed to the agency’s cultural policy and able to work in
partnership with Maori
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
Ability to practice social work at an advanced level of competency
Good knowledge of the dynamics of family conflict, Care and Protection legislation and all safety
protocols relevant to children's safety and domestic violence issues. Knowledge of CYP & F Act,
(1989), and other relevant legislation.
Good knowledge of infant and child development, psycho-social dynamics, family systems theories.
A working knowledge of addiction and anti-social behaviours.
Being able to work both with staff and with management in partnership.
Must have a sense of humour.
Skills and knowledge in basic computer operation
Excellent written and oral communication skills
