Oracle has released their much-anticipated new
database, Oracle Database 12c. This new release
is considered a revolution in terms of the technical
capabilities it offers users.
Oracle Database 12c includes several hundred new
features that enhance what was already the worlds
leading RDBMS in all areas, including performance,
security, high availability, disaster recovery and ease
of administration.
Multi-Tenancy
Oracle Database 12c introduces a new database
architecture that uses six times less hardware, and
is five times more scalable than before! The new
architecture, known as multitenant database, is
enabled through “pluggable” databases, each of
which acts like a totally separate virtual database in
its own right, and acts just like a pre-12c database
for an application (packaged or custom). It is
possible for the root level “container” database
to hold up to 252 pluggable databases, with only
a single set of memory processes and structures
required to support all of the pluggable databases,
therefore allowing for previously unheard of levels of
consolidation.
The pluggable database architecture provides
additional benefits over and above consolidation.
Upgrading and patching now becomes simplified
and significantly faster. Upgrading a container
database instantly upgrades all pluggable
databases (PDBs) within it. Alternatively individual
PDBs can be “unplugged” from the CDB and
“plugged’ back into another patched/upgraded/
modified container database (CDB).
• Easy build of private cloud
• Resource control between and within PDBs (CPU, IO1, Parallelism)
Selected Other New Features
Information Lifecycle Management: Data usage is
now tracked at a granular level with it possible to
automatically move or compress data based on
usage patterns. For example after one (1) month of
being unused data can be compressed and moved
to a new partitioning (allowing for the exploitation of
tiered storage).
Additional Online Operations: It is now possible
to perform even more operations on-line (that is
without any disruption to the end user) including
online move of active datafiles and online move of
partitions and sub-partitions.
Easier Migrations: Several new features at both
database architecture and development level
allow for much easier migration from other platforms
such as SQLServer and Sybase.
Cross Platform RMAN Recovery: For clients looking
to change platforms life has never been easier.
12c allows migration from one operating system
to another through rman backupsets – including
incrementals to provide for near zero downtime
migration
Other Changes: Many new features exist for high
availability including changes to DataGuard for
improved WAN support, Global Service Manager
(GSM) and a whole new ASM architecture called
Flex ASM.
