in the Dining Room!
Listen closely...do you hear it? The sounds of spring - birds tweeting,
gentler breezes blowing, and if you listen very closely, you might be
able to detect the ticking of a clock - the countdown to summer is ON! You know summer is right around the corner when the mail arrives
with a letter from AYC reminding you to purchase your sticker for
your sailboat!
As the days of April showers give way to May flowers, activity at
the Avalon Yacht Club ramps up. Fridays in the Grill Room have been well attended,
as members get used to the new cashless payment system (if you'd like to learn more,
there's information in this issue of the Topsider). They have found it very convenient,
and the club's new online system is functioning very smoothly; don't forget to check out
the "Member Log In" section of the AYC website (you'll need your member number;
once you're in, you can view the member directory, edit your directory profile, make
payment arrangements for your club balance, etc.).
The club premises are looking to be in "ship shape" after some improvements over the
winter months; new decking adorns the main entrance and the stairs off of the rear of
the club (we hope to replace all of the decking over a few years). Some new storage
and a new fence are in place near the youth room. There will be several new rooftop
HVAC units in place this season as well, and some new equipment in the kitchen (not to
mention the services of a pastry chef) will enhance the quality of food at the club this
season.
Inside this issue, you'll also see some information on upcoming events at the Club;
Mother's Day brunch is almost here (get your reservations now), and information on
sailing, club activities, Women's Auxiliary events, and some early highlights of the
social calendar are mentioned in this month's issue - check it out!
Deirdre and I are thrilled to be atop the flag this year, and are looking forward to seeing
so many of you again in our beloved Avalon very soon. Until then, we hope that you
enjoy a happy and healthy Spring.
Best regards,
Pat McAleer, Commodore

THE AVALON YACHT CLUB HAS GONE CASHLESS!
Over the winter we implemented a new system to manage the clubs operations, finances, and cash registers. This will help us to better manage
our club operations and also provide new benefits to our members. Those benefits include:
•
•
•
•
Fully cashless operations, allowing members to charge anything purchased in the club to their account, including the Ship's Store!
Retaining the ability to charge a dining room, grill room, or Ship's Store purchase directly to a credit or debit card, by a member or a member's guest
The ability to set up an automatic settling of member's monthly bills to a card or checking account on file
Greatly enhanced, state of the art security technology to dramatically minimize the risk of card fraud originating from transactions with the club
Some members have asked what if these new payment capabilities are expensive for the club, which is a great question and one very much
appreciated by the Finance Committee! The short answer is as follows: The least costly alternative for the club would be to have every
member write a check each month to settle their account. Only slightly more expensive is to set up an "ACH" (Automated Clearing House)
to automatically and electronically debit a member's designated checking account each month. The most expensive for the club is to settle
monthly charges to a credit card. Our advice is for members to do whichever is most convenient for them, and the Finance Committee will be
monitoring the cost impact as the season progresses. Any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

In addition, we are excited to continue this year with our silent

feature this year – a mini marketplace – where will have some
unique vendors so we can indulge in a little shop. We will be
featuring vendors such as Baker Bloom, a unique purse boutique,
along with Meg Kershner, who has wonderful personalized items
also seen in the Ship’s Store. It will be an exciting evening of fun

YOUTH & SAILING
Summer is just around the corner and the first sailing and arts & crafts session will begin on June 29th. All members
who participated in the program last year should have received registration packages for the 2015 Summer Youth Sailing
Program. If you have not, the forms are on the AYC Website. Any families who want to register their child for the
program for the first time can request registration packages at [email protected] or by calling the club at
609-967-5616, or by getting the forms from the AYC website.
Kevin Strogen will return as the Director of Youth & Sailing and Leigh Ann Penske will return to Arts & Crafts. We are anticipating an
exciting summer of sailing, racing, arts and crafts, swimming, and fun for all AYC youth! Our sailing program, for many, has been a great
way to make new friends and begin lifelong friendships. AYC youngsters can enjoy the beauty and freedom of sailing while learning a skill
that they may put to use in their teenage or college years. We are fortunate to have a solid group of instructors and program management
to work with the children. We encourage you to sign up your child today! Please contact Bob Hartel at [email protected] for any
questions.
AYC Sailors have already started competing this season. Congratulations to AYC Sailor and Instructor Sam Mandel who placed 4th at
Charleston Race Week in the J22 class. Sam was skippering a chartered boat which he dubbed “AYC1” for the event. Congratulations
Sam and thank you for representing our club! The regatta website, including results and pictures can be seen at the following link.

HONOR A PAST
COMMODORE
INTERESTED IN AYC HISTORY?
Why not pay tribute to a
Past Commodore for their years
of service at AYC and at the
same time add artwork to the
renovated Club Room on our
second floor? A new project is
in place to do just that! You can
arrange to have a copy of the Past Commodore’s yearbook
cover matted, framed and labeled with their name and year.
These framed tributes will hang on the walls of the Club
Room to honor our Past Commodores. It would make an
ideal gift for home or office as well.
The AYC yearbooks from
We have commissioned The Inside Advantage,
