in Gainesville, FL on a full

brother, and coaches; before
signing, he thanked everyone for their support and
said he’d make them proud.

The Poetry Out Loud contest was important for our students
for many reasons. It teaches students the importance of performance and public speaking skills, which are applicable in
almost every college and career scenario, as well as in everyday life. It also teaches students the rhythms of language and
how to communicate effectively with others. Finally, it
teaches students how to convey powerful meaning and emotion using their individual, unique voices. This contest allowed our students to be involved in an important, meaningful competition that showcased their talents and gave our
students and our school a chance to shine.
Timothy Chandler, our BDCHS Poetry Out Loud school
champion (pictured right), went on to compete in the State
Finals in Tallahassee. Out of over 15,000 high school students from all over the state of Florida, Timothy was ranked
12thoverall!
We hope to have an even more successful competition next
year.
- Ms. Julie Youngster, Poetry Out Loud Coordinator
Softball Phoenix Showing Grit, Perseverance
The softball team, led by returning players Deja Benjamin
(Senior), Brooke Diaz and Bre
Barker (Juniors), have had their
hands full with one of the toughest schedules in program history.
The good news is the team has
had a surge in interest and is
carrying seventeen players on
the roster this season. With only
one senior, the future looks
bright as the team continues to
work hard in skill development
and team bonding.
Having come close to victories
in early season games against
Berkeley Prep (L 7-5) and Carrollwood Day (L 5-4), they got
over the hump this week beating
Indian Rocks Christian 8-1 on
the strong pitching of Victoria
Lancet and a defense that was
relentless in route to the victory.
The team had their last home
game for a while against district
rival Bishop McLaughlin this
Thursday (3/19) and then begins
a stretch of four difficult away
games agsinst Seffner Christian
(3/20), Tampa Catholic (3/23),
Academy at the Lakes (3/25) and
Bishop McLaughlin (3/27), before playing at home again
against Tampa Prep (3/31).
All home games are at the North
Seminole Little League complex. Come out March 31st, fill
the stands and support the team
against district rival Tampa
Prep!

Sports Update - Baseball Art Students Shine
The Phoenix baseball team
begins the District 7
tournament next week!
The boys have won two of
their last four games, including wins over Leto 5-4 and
Shorecrest Prep 11-5. They
will face Lakeland Christian
April 17th in their final regular season game.
Good luck in Districts!
Junior Anthony Diaz has been accepted into the
first round of judging for the annual 14th Congressional High School Art Exhibition. His painting is
currently hanging in the Tampa Museum of Art
waiting for final selections. If chosen, Anthony’s
painting would be on display in the U.S. Capitol for
one year! Congratulations, Anthony!
Sophomore Brooke Vantoorenburg also has art
work that has been recently celebrated. Her original
piece reflects a recycling or waste reduction theme
and has been selected to be entered into the City of
Tampa Art Contest. The winning submission will
be enlarged and wrapped on the sides of Tampa
recycling trucks all over the city. Congratulations
Brooke and good luck in this unique contest!
