An Evening with John Julius Norwich
'Sicily: A Short History from the Ancient Greeks to Cosa Nostra '
Monday 15th June
Starts 7.30pm, doors open 7pm
Chorleywood Memorial Hall, WD3 5LN
Historical writer and TV presenter John Julius Norwich was inspired to write this
book during his first visit to Sicily in 1961. This tremendous read explores the dark
and hidden story of the Mediterranean's largest island and is the conclusion of
a fascination that has lasted over half a century.
The evening will begin with a glass of Sicilian wine and traditional Sicilian pizza in
the company of our sponsors who know all about the modern day Sicily. But this is
also a wonderful opportunity to learn more about its history- from erupting
volcanoes to the assassination of Byzantine emperors, from Nelson’s affair with
Emma Hamilton to Garibaldi and the rise of the Mafia. Norwich features the key
buildings and towns and includes fascinating stories and unforgettable
characters. Sicily is the book he was born to write.
This is an ideal evening for history lovers or for those who just want to learn a bit
more about the beautiful Mediterranean island and its rich history. Join
Chorleywood Bookshop for a fascinating talk, presented by a remarkable speaker.
Event book vouchers £8.00, book £15.00 on the night (RRP £25.00).
