Junior Giants Frequently Asked Questions
Junior Giants Frequently Asked Questions
What is Junior Giants?
Junior Giants is more than just baseball. It's a free, non-competitive, co-ed baseball program for
underserved boys and girls, ages 5-13. It offers youth a chance to learn the basics of baseball, while
also learning the Four Bases of Character Development: Confidence, Integrity, Leadership and
Teamwork as well as fundamental lessons in Education, Health and Violence Prevention.
How old does my child have to be to participate?
Children must be between 5-13 years old by July 1st.
When does the program start?
The program runs mid-June through the beginning of August.
What days are practices / games? Where are they held?
Teams practice 2 days per week and have their game Saturday morning. Each day is divided where
half the time is dedicated to baseball and the other half to the weekly educational lesson—all done
on the ball fields at Winship Middle School in Eureka, Rohner Park in Fortuna and Hiller Sports
Complex in McKinleyville.
Who coaches the team?
Coaches are all volunteers, usually parents. Volunteer coaches are provided professional training,
and receive a thorough background check.
How much does the program cost?
The program is FREE to all participants. Our goal is to eliminate any barrier for families to have
access to the program.
We’re planning a family vacation for the summer, can my child still participate?
Typically Jr. Giants programs fill to capacity (in our case 300 participants). For this purpose, the
Giants Community Fund has established a “3 Strikes Rule.” If a participant misses 3 or more activity
sessions, a member from the waiting list will be allowed to take their space.
What if we register and find the schedule doesn’t work for us?
No problem. Let us know as soon as possible so we can provide your space to the next person on the
waiting list.
How is my child motivated throughout the season?
Aside from the fun of baseball, the Giants Community Fund provides many incentives for
achievements in the educational aspect of the program from trading cards and notebooks to
backpacks, bobbleheads and even tickets to attend a San Francisco Giants game!
