DEAR ORLANDO, I LOVE YOU, BUT…
Margo Roth Spiegelman, a Central Florida native, went on
plenty of adventures in Orlando. Her greatest moments included
catching sight of the city from a top of the SunTrust skyscraper
and sneaking into SeaWorld theme park moments before dawn.
But not even those thrilling journeys could keep Margo from
growing tired of Orlando. As the 18-year-old student, she began
focusing on the faults of Orlando and the people within the city.
“It’s a paper town. I mean, look at it, those streets, all the houses
that were built to fall apart. I have never once in my life come
across anyone who cares about anything that matters here,”
Margo said of the city.
Before the Orlando fanatics form an “I hate Margo” group,
I must point out the cynical teen is not real. She is just a character
in John Green’s novel, Paper Towns. But I like to think the
fictional personality is not all that fictional. I think she exists in
the ambitions of my classmates and me.
Just like Margo, I have lived in Central Florida my entire
life. I have never done anything as drastic as breaking into
SeaWorld, but the region has taken me on some unforgettable
childhood adventures. But even with the hundreds of memories
I have had here, I cannot help but dream of the day I leave this
place.
It is not like that I hate Orlando and I cannot stand living
here. But there is nothing new for me to explore here. I have
eaten the same meals at the same restaurants for the past 16
years. I have seen the angry mobs at the Florida Mall so many
times that I do not pay attention to them anymore. The only
thing I have not got used to in Orlando is the roads. I get lost at
least 500 times each day.
In fact, I am fond of this city, and I think it is overflowing with
wonderful people and places. However, I am ready to find a new
setting for my life. I want to replace familiar classmates with
complete strangers at a university. I want to move to a city that
freezes over in December and see snow for the first time. I want
to be sure I no longer need my mom and dad when I find a tiny
spider in my room and suffer a panic attack.
Let me be clear: there is nothing I want to leave behind. When
I leave Florida in the fall of 2015, I want everyone here to
understand that I do this because I must find a greater definition
of myself, I must leave the borders of my hometown and explore
new worlds. But until this time comes, I will try my best to stop
concentrating so much on tomorrow and appreciate one last
year of staying here.
