INVITATION FROM THE ISPO PRESIDENT
ISPO WORLD CONGRESS
As ISPO’s flagship meeting, the ISPO 16th World Congress is a unique interactive forum where the
global community of professionals involved in the care of persons in need of prosthetic, orthotic,
mobility and assistive devices comes together to learn about the latest scientific and clinical advances,
products, innovative technologies, designs and materials in prosthetic and orthotic care.
It is my pleasure to invite you to the ISPO World Congress in the fabulous city of
Cape Town in South Africa. Already in its 16th edition, this World Congress will
be hosted under the theme “Assistive Technology for All”.
Participants include orthotists, prosthetists, physiatrists, orthopaedic surgeons, physical and
occupational therapists, rehabilitation engineers, caregivers, clinical psychologists, social institutions
and many others.
Ensuring increased access to assistive technology for users worldwide forms part
of ISPO’s vision to “contribute to a world where all persons have equal opportunity for full participation in society”.
The broad interdisciplinary programme features symposia, instructional courses, exhibitor’ workshops
and paper & poster presentations.
This Congress offers professionals involved in P&O rehabilitation a unique opportunity for continued
development through discussion and exchange amongst teachers, clinicians, researchers, technicians,
manufacturers, doctors, therapists and healthcare decision-makers.
Furthermore, the parallel tradeshow provides a platform for equipment manufacturers from across
the globe to showcase their products, as well as to exchange ideas, network and get closer to their
customers.
Educational institutions, systems and service providers, rehabilitation centres, financial institutions,
etc. also get an opportunity to promote their activities to an international audience while learning,
sharing, initiating new projects and building partnerships.
ORGANISERS
THE CONGRESS IS
ORGANISED BY:
Association of Prosthetics and
Orthotics - SADC region
IN COLLABORATION WITH:
Rural Rehab
South Africa
South African Society
of Physiotherapy
Occupational Therapy Association
of South Africa (OTASA)
DIAMOND SPONSOR:
People with disabilities have the same general health care needs as others but are three times more
likely to be denied health care and four times more likely to receive unsatisfactory treatment*.
To change this alarming scenario we, as ISPO International, believe that we can contribute significantly
to improve access by working together with international agencies, national governments, P&O and
rehabilitation professionals and the industry and the users/groups. To foster this, ISPO will also host a
dedicated session, jointly with the WHO, on the Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology (GATE).
We are also planning to launch the new WHO Standards for Prosthetic & Orthotics supported by ISPO
and USAID at the World Congress 2017.
THE CONGRESS IS
ENDORSED BY:
SUPPORTED BY:
Today, it is estimated that only 5%-15% of the people who require Replace with:
prostheses or orthoses or any other assistive products actually get them. In 2050, it is anticipated that
there will be 2 billion people in need of assistive devices with only 1 in 20 having access to them*.
Through a high calibre scientific programme delivered by a variety of professionals from various
disciplines and regions, by offering a parallel exhibition where companies, NGOs, training institutions
and government organisations showcase their latest product developments and projects and by
gathering all the individuals working in the P&O and rehabilitation field on the African continent, the
ISPO 16th World Congress will do just that.
Time is running, and I call upon the ISPO community to start the work and act together towards
making this congress the edition of cooperation and unity. On behalf of the organisers, we very much
look forward to your participation and contributions.

INVITATION FROM THE CONGRESS SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE CHAIR
The ISPO 16th World Congress Scientific Programme is a major contributor to
professional communication and global advancement in prosthetic and orthotic
care. I call upon you to join us as a presenter or participant, since the global sharing
of ideas, methods, and results is fundamental for improving quality of life for people
with disabilities.
The programme will provide platforms for symposia, instructional courses, free
papers, posters, case study presentations, and keynote speakers. This variety of
communication opportunities allow the global community to interact and foster
further assistive technology and health related innovations.
The conference theme “Assistive Technology for All” also applies to the multidisciplinary
aspect of congress delegates and scientific programme participants. Interacting with
a diverse group of professionals (from prosthetists-orthotists to physicians to
physiotherapists to psychologists to professional engineers) provides opportunities to
change practice for the better and to “think outside the box” by interacting with
experts from around the world who provide a different professional perspective.
I look forward to meeting you at the ISPO 16th World Congress in Cape Town.

ISPO & WHO GATE Symposium, supported by USAID
Only one in ten people in need have access to assistive technology. As a result,
people are often excluded from participating in society, and locked into poverty and
isolation. The World Health Organisation is coordinating the GATE initiative to
address this huge and unmet global need, and improve access to high-quality
affordable Assistive Products.
The ISPO World Congress 2017 will host a GATE Symposium jointly organised by
ISPO and the WHO, and supported by USAID, with high level speakers and
participants from government and leading institutions.

About South Africa and Cape Town
Cape Town and the Western Cape are considered
among the most beautiful areas in Africa and the
world. Characterized by a cultural melting pot of
its original people and tribes, mixed together with
Indonesian, French, Dutch, British, and German
cultures, the pristine coastline with its white
sandy beaches, the magnificent countryside with
its bountiful rivers, wetlands and dams, and the
unique flora combined with a warm climate and
friendly community, the region is perfect
destination to explore.
Cape Town International Convention
Centre (CTICC)
In the middle of Cape Town’s business and
entertainment centre, a stone’s throw away from
the congress hotels and the famous Cape Town
Waterfront, the CTICC provides excellent facilities
venues for the congress.
Health & Safety
In general Cape Town is a safe city to visit. In
common with many major cities world-wide,
there is crime and there are precautions to be
taken. As everywhere, visitors are encouraged to
remain in the main tourist areas in the downtown
area of the city and are advised to not carry too
many valuables with them.
Weather
With the winter approaching, May can be cool.
Visitors will certainly want to bring jackets and
layers, as well as prepare for some precipitation.
The natural beauty around Cape Town is no less
stunning in the cooler months, and May is a great
time to visit when there are less tourists at the
popular attractions like
Table Mountain.
Only a short flight away, South Africa is the
perfect destination for an encounter with the
famous Big Five during an adventurous safari.

The International Society for
Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) is a
global multidisciplinary non-governmental organization acting as a
platform for the exchange and communication
on all aspects of the science, practice and
education associated with the provision of
prosthetic and orthotic care, rehabilitation
engineering and related areas.
In cooperation with the WHO, ISPO undertakes
advocacy and awareness raising activities to call
for increased access to quality and affordable
assistive health technologies for people with
disabilities worldwide.
Purpose and Function
ISPO aims to improve the quality of life for
persons who may benefit from prosthetic,
orthotic, mobility and assistive devices. For this
purpose, ISPO promotes the provision of quality
services, innovative technology, clinically relevant
research, and education in the field of rehabilitation for persons with physical disabilities. ISPO
further advises on and advocates for best
practices to governments and non-governmental
organizations on key issues.
