Employment Dates: June 1, 2015 – July 30, 2015
PROGRAM SUMMMARY:
Camp SEA Lab operates under the University Corporation @ CSUMB and has close ties to several
Monterey Bay area universities and institutions. Camp SEA Lab is governed by the University
Corporation at Monterey Bay and an Advisory Board of Directors comprised of members from
collaborating institutions.
Camp SEA Lab’s mission is to foster lifelong excitement, scientific understanding, and stewardship of
our coasts and ocean. The exceptional environment of the Monterey Bay region, and a host of exemplary
marine science and education institutions make it a perfect setting for a science camp program focused on
ocean and coastal resources.
Camp SEA Lab programs are designed for youth ages 8-16 from culturally diverse backgrounds. Summer
programs are delivered in a multi-day format as residential or day experiences (visit our website
campsealab.org for more information). All Camp SEA Lab staff is engaged in the development and
implementation of a safe, educational, and inspiring program in marine science.
Work schedule: Day camp hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday. Residential camp hours are
from 9:00 am on the first day through 4:00 pm on the last day, Sunday - Thursday. Naturalists must be
available during all program hours and are required to stay overnight during residential camps.
Housing: Camp SEA Lab will provide room, board and meals during residential programs only.
Candidate must provide own housing during day programs and staff training week.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator and the Field Coordinator, Naturalists will work on a
variety of tasks related to the implementation of the Camp SEA Lab vision and programs, while
maintaining the safety and well being of participants. The following is a list of tasks required to carry out
job functions:
§ Implement safety procedures and risk management protocols during all programs.
§ Effectively deliver marine science lessons to students age 8-16; lead large group activities in
non-competitive games.
§ Work effectively in a dynamic team setting, demonstrating sensitivity to diversity and
multiple working styles.
§ Provide constant supervision of students’ participation in structured and unstructured
activities.
§ Demonstrate sensitivity to special, developmental, and emotional needs of students.
§ Appropriately model behavior and use positive behavior management techniques.
§ Maintain positive relationships with Camp SEA Lab community partners and customers.
§ Ability to safely drive students in camp vehicles, adhering to all traffic laws and defensive
driving protocols.
QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience
§ Demonstrate knowledge of and familiarity with the marine environments along the central
coast.
§ Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the Camp SEA Lab and CSU Monterey
Bay Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service
orientation, multiculturalism and diversity.
§ Experience in youth focused-programs and delivery of science content; knowledge of
inquiry-based teaching strategies and Next Generation Science Standards.
§ Demonstrate creativity and productivity on work assignments within a team setting.
§ Able to traverse a wide range of habitats. Ability to walk at least three miles of rough terrain.
§ Ability to work with diverse and multicultural populations.
§ Ability to lift and carry 30-40 pounds and load luggage, tables, chairs, and other equipment.
§ Excellent oral and written communication skills.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position, including the
knowledge and abilities identified above. In addition, the successful candidate will meet the all following
conditions:
§ Minimum age requirement of 21 years of age.
§ Possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a science-related field.
§ Must be able to get to and from CSUMB campus via own transportation.
§ Possess necessary endurance to maintain supervision of students during all program hours.
§ Must be able to swim and participate in water-related activities (such as kayaking, surfing).
§ Successfully pass a criminal background and National Sex Offender check through
University Corporation.
§ Must possess current First Aid/Child CPR certification throughout duration of employment.
§ Must possess a valid driver’s license, submit a clean driving record, and pass an on-line
University Corporation Defensive Driving Course prior to employment.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
§ Bilingual – Spanish and English
§ Water Safety and Lifeguard Certification
§ California State Teaching Credential
PAY SCHEDULE:
Non-overnight shift
Overnight shift
$86 to $93 per day
$115 to $125 per day

All applicants are screened for minimum qualifications. Qualified applicants are referred to the selection
committee for interview. The selection process may take two to three weeks, if not longer. If selected for
an interview, candidates will be notified to schedule and interview appointment. Applicants not selected
for interview will be notified only after the position closes and successful candidate(s) have been chosen.
The hiring committee will make the final selection and forward the recommendation to the University
Corporation Human Resources Department.
