It`s no surprise that Camp Chevra keeps up the fun all year long
Chevra Shmooze
From the Couch of Taz:
It’s no surprise that Camp Chevra
keeps up the fun all year long. Other than that,
however, Camp Chevra is full of surprises!
Like, remember the time when Tzviki ate a
mouse? Me neither, but that would’ve been
surprising. Anyway, we kicked off the second
half with one of our notorious surprises: a
string hunt! Who could’ve seen that coming?
No one, that’s who.
Most surprised of all
were the strings, who
scrambled for their
lives as campers hunted them down. I’d love
to print one of those
classic disclaimers that
says something along
the lines of “No strings
were harmed during
this activity,” but it
would simply be false.
Lots of strings were harmed. It’s a string hunt.
What did you expect?
To be fair, strings don’t have feelings
or pain receptors, so it’s not like it’s a big deal
or anything. Campers, conversely, do have
feelings, and they felt pretty awesome after the
hunt. And who felt the best of all? The winners
did! The bunk with the longest compiled string
at the end was the fifth grade, no strings attached. (That last line was courtesy of Rabbi
Peikes, and the Chevra Shmooze takes no responsibility.)
String hunts also leave people hungry,
which is why it’s a good thing Monday also
happened to be PIZZA DAY! And guess who
missed Pizza Day again! Yup, it was Gav. And
more importantly, me. How do I keep doing
this to myself? This is the third time I’ve
Volume 8, Issue 5
missed out on ooey-gooey cheesy delicious
pizza with all the accouterments. It’s so good
and I’ve snookered myself once again! I vow
to return for the next Pizza Day (whenever that
may be), and if I don’t make it, I will cry uncontrollably! Considering my track record this
year, I’d better get the tissues ready.
For the record, I don’t actually know if
Pizza Day took place before or after the string
hunt.
Monday
also
brought in a slew of newcomers, as it was (as
mentioned in the first paragraph) the first day of
the second half. In addition to welcoming the
new campers, the Chevra
Shmooze would like to
welcome all the new staff
members, including: Shalom Adams, Eli Klein,
Akiva Rosenberg, Zat,
Daniel Blech, and Eli Jakubovic. Some of
them did start at the very end of the first half,
so don’t start correcting me on that. And to
those staff members who are wondering why I
didn’t give a shout-out at the beginning of the
summer: I honestly don’t have an answer for
you. I think I mainly put in this paragraph as
space filler. Sue me. (Please don’t really sue
me.)
Welcome to Tuesday, the day after
Monday! Leagues began on Tuesday! Who’s
ready for a leagues update? Not me: we haven’t heard the sound yet. When we do, I’ll be
sure to update y’all on the latest standings. Instead, I’ll take this opportunity to say that the
daily plays resumed on Tuesday. I’m not sure
why I keep reminding you that the plays resumed. They’re daily. Yes, we miss a day or
Chevra Shmooze
two here and there, but then they resume. All
the time. So yeah, we have daily plays, and
they’re so much fun! When we do miss days,
campers are sad. Then they get happy again
because they’re in CAMP CHEVRA!
On Tuesday, Shalom Bob was also
dealt a challenge to his title as second-place
champ of the singing competition. FTR, Rabbi
Peikes is the first-place champion. The contest,
you see, has one contestant sings a song, then
the other has to continue with a song that starts
with the last letter that was sung by contestant
number one. This may sound like Quidditch or
Bunk Feud in terms of complicated-ness, but
it’s not that hard.
Eh-nee-way, the challenger was Noach
Weinstein, and he was busy working his way
through the ranks in order to contend with
Bobby Ray Shalom. Will he have what it takes
to topple him? We will find out on Wednesday
when the adventure continues!
The next day was Wednesday. Noach
lost. Sorry.
Wednesday was also the day of our annual WATER FIGHT! But since we don’t condone fighting in Camp Chevra, it was more of
a water conflict. Or a water tiff. Or a water exchange-of-unpleasantries. One of those things.
Happens to be, the water clash is one of the
most anticipated events of the summer, and it
did not
disappoint.
Nobody
was
able to
get
Rabbi
Peikes
wet,
though.
That’s
because he was already wet beforehand.
Is that the leagues update sound? Nope.
Is that it? Nope. WIZZ-BAAAAAAAANG!
Hey, that’s it! It’s time for a leagues update!
Volume 8, Issue 5
Excellent. In the Jew-niors, three teams are
tied in first at 2-1! Winless Shalom Adams
knows that he can only go uphill from here.
In the intermediate division, three
teams are also tied in first. The difference:
they’re tied at 3-2. No matter. What does matter is that Avramie Gross’ team is going to
keep on truckin’ because in Camp Chevra, you
don’t get the first draft pick when you finish
last.
Then
there are the
seniors.
We
don’t
care
about
them
(because they
cheat),
but
since I’m nice,
I’ll list their standings anyway. Guess who’s in
first place! It’s… MENACHEM REISER! He
finished last in the first half, but he’s making
up for it now in a big way! He’s at 3-2, and
there are two teams half a game behind him at
2-2-1. Those teams are Mo-Kay and Shlo-Ber.
As for Sha-Bob… he is a responsible person
and should be commended for that. He’s a solid three.
That takes us all the way up to Thursday. If you’ve been following along, you’d
know that we’ve been going in sequential order, so this actually makes sense. There’s a
natural order to things! Organization rules!
Speaking of organization, Chai Lifeline is a
pretty good one, and on Thursday we had a
Chai Lifeline Bowl-a-Thon, where campers
and counselors alike bowled to raise money for
them.
Rabbi Peikes and Shalom Bob were
pretty confident in their bowling skillz. After
all, they are the first-and second-place champions of the singing competition; why wouldn’t
this translate into bowling? I can think of
countless flaws in that argument, but we’ll discuss later. You can speak to me about that in
person if you really feel the need. Back on
track: Bob and Rabbi P were so confident that
Chevra Shmooze
they offered a case of soda to anyone who
could top their respective scores.
Did anyone do it? Is it even possible?
Yup. Sheffy Frankel notched 144 points and
got himself a case of soda from Rabbi Peikes!
144 is a lot: it’s an average of 14.4 points per
frame,
and considering
there’s
only ten
pins per,
that’s
pretty impressive.
Obviously he cheated, since he’s a senior, but he got
the soda anyway because Camp Chevra is
sympathetic.
Speaking of sympathetic, we’d like to
extend sympathies to a fellow camp, which we
defeated yet again in another intercamp game,
this time baseball. Hooray us!
And speaking of hooray us, hooray for
our staff! As you know (since you’ve heartily
perused every issue of the Chevra Shmooze
thus far), our staff has been attending a nightly
shiur (hosted by our own Rabbi Peikes) in Gemara Rosh HaShana. Well, as of this week, the
staff has completed the first perek, encompassing 22 blatt. It’s all just in time for our special
staff Shabbos, which is sure to be filled with
ruach. Our staff is so wonderful and cohesive!
We may have discussed Shabbos already, but let’s not skip Friday. We were supposed to do Kangaroo Court on Friday, even
though we weren’t supposed to, but we had to
postpone it, which is fine since it wasn’t originally on the schedule for this Friday anyway.
So what did we do instead? I don’t know, I
wasn’t there. But I’m sure it was exciting,
much like everything else in Camp Chevra. It
probably involved racehorses and pine cones
or something. We love that stuff!
What do we have in store next week?
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and
Volume 8, Issue 5
Friday! Would you like to know what we’re
doing on those days? I bet you do! On Mon-
day, we are going to have an
amaaaaaazing trip! That means camp
will be ending at 3:30, so please make
note of that! On Tuesday, we are scheduled
to have Slurpee Day! Tons of Slurpees have
already been distributed this summer (Taz
loves giving out Slurpees!) but this time, the
whole camp gets to go! Wednesday is Balloon
Day! It’s true! We’re not full of hot air!
(Womp womp womp…) On Thursday, we
have… oh my goodness, two weeks in a row…
I vowed I would be there for this, so I better
make good on my promise, because it’s… PIZZA DAY! HOW CAN I POSSIBLY CONTAIN MY EXHILIRATION?! Finally, that
leaves the Treasure Hunt on Friday, which is
similar to the string hunt, except for the fact
that we hunt treasure instead of strings. Treasure is more valuable. Also, on Friday, we’ll be
giving out the Chevra Shmooze! It’s been the
number-one ranked newsletter in New York
for the past three years! Judging is about to
begin
for
this
summer, so everyone vote
for
the
Chevra
Shmooze to
win
once
again! Fourpeat!
Advance apologies to anyone left off
the updated staff list: if your name is missing,
you know how to reach me. Actually, you
probably don’t. Tell Rabbi Peikes, and he’ll
know what to do. Also, everyone start working
on your yearbook articles. Isn’t it a little early
for that? Absolutely. But why not get a head
start? I’d rather tell you now than in three
weeks… when camp is over.
On that note, have a lovely, lovely
Shabbos!
