capacity to support the developmental needs
of their children through an understanding
of ADHD and associated behaviours and
through their relationship with their children.
Anxiety Connections provides support for
young people suffering from anxiety.
This grant is to support Umbrella Society as
they expand their youth focused services—in
particular their peer outreach model, to
connect with youth struggling with addiction
issues as well as the growing number of
youth who are struggling with concurrent
disorders where substance use and mental
health issues exist at the same time.
This is a music therapy program for children
with complex health issues. The program
combines music therapy, speech therapy
and occupational therapy and is delivered
over a two-week summer camp.
Support to purchase two therapeutic riding
horses that will be trained for the special
needs of children with disabilities.
Support for a Wellness Navigator to work
with youth to better understand and access
available health and social services.
Last year, CHFVI provided funding to the
Clements Centre to develop a new way to
deliver speech language services to First
Nations families and their young children.
This project has shown early success, so this
year, the Centre will continue to build
relationships with First Nation families and
further refine this culturally sensitive service
delivery model.
This program provides therapeutic riding
and equine-based services for persons with
disabilities.
This program provides interactive activities
and offers an intensive 6-week program for
families with children aged 0-6 focusing on
healthy eating, active living, positive body
image, positive parenting, physical literacy
and various coping and mental health
strategies and community connections.
This program supports families whose
children have developmental, behavioural,
and attachment issues.
The Navigator program supports families to
navigate the complex system of social, health
and community supports and services. This

grant will enable the Centre to hire a new
staff person to work with families to address
their financial, social and health related
issues, which will improve wait times.
This summer camp is for children and youth
5 to 19 years of age with identified special
needs. The camp helps them increase their
knowledge, social engagement and skills,
and it addresses a service gap that happens
in summer, when most of their individualized
support programs are closed down.
This grant supports access to recreational
and extracurricular programming for
children and youth who have difficultly
integrating or need extra support.
Programming support would include afterschool programs, local teen groups, summer
youth programs after-school sports
community soccer and various classes
including dance, and arts.
The Comox Valley CDC is in the process of
opening a number of satellite locations in
order to better serve families in the Comox
Valley. This is being done in partnership with
the school district, public health, and other
local agencies that work with children and
families. The satellite program will create a
network of centres across the region that will
provide parents of young children with
consistent access and referral to services.
Funding will support existing therapeutic
riding services as well as support the
development and implementation of an
evaluation of their program. The Society
serves many communities up island
including Courtney, Comox, Union Bay,
Fanny Bay, Oyster River, Denman and
Hornby, Sayward, Black Creek and Campbell
River.
This program provides transitional support
to youth with developmental disabilities as
they leave the school system. The program is
delivered as a weekly support group that
addresses independent living (food
preparation, using public transportation,
fitness) art-making (creating marketable
projects for sale in the community and job
readiness (volunteer opportunities, social
skills, specific job development).
Support to purchase equipment to create a
safe and inviting space for children with
sensory needs and their families.

This is a mentoring program which focuses
on the positive development of children and
youth ages 6-18 who could benefit from
having stable and caring adults in their lives.
Approximately 25% of participants have a
formal mental health diagnosis, and the
remainder display behaviour and actions
that put them at risk of developing mental
health difficulties.
Child Youth Families Mental Health Services
and Early Intervention Program
This is a pilot project designed to provide
mental health supports along with early
intervention services to approximately 30
families.
Child Youth Families School Aged Program
This is an expansion of a successful pilot
project that provided an Occupational
Therapist to increase support for high
school students transitioning from school in
School District 61. The pilot was successful,
and Island Health is now expanding the
program to the Sooke and Saanich School
Districts.
Child Youth Families Therapeutic Recreational
Programs: QA Summer Camp
This integrated summer camp helps kids
with physical disabilities and/or
developmental disorders decrease social
isolation by building friendships. It also
improves their fitness levels and encourages
healthy eating.
Child Youth Families Therapeutic Recreational
Programs: iCanBike
iCan Bike is a week-long bike camp that
helps children with physical, cognitive or
emotional challenges learn to ride a twowheel bike. The program is presented in
collaboration with a private service provider,
iCan Shine Inc. In the past, the program has
had a 96% success rate.
Child Youth Families Early Intervention
Program: Therapeutic Riding
This program provides physiotherapy on
horseback for children (ages 3 to 5) with
special needs in partnership with Victoria
Therapeutic Riding Association. Benefits

Child Youth Families Early Intervention
Program:
Social Work Service Delivery
The Early Intervention program supports
over 1000 children and their families. The
social work program ensures these families
have the supports they need to be able to
both care for their children as well as
continue to cope with their special needs,
which includes everything from positive
parenting strategies to system navigation.
Child Youth Families Pediatric Orthotics and
Prosthetics
This program provides clinical and technical
assessments, manufacturing and fitting of
child and youth bracing and seating not paid
for by the government, third party insurance
or fees. Without this program, families with
children with complex mobility needs would
be required to go off island or work with a
private supplier.
Child Youth Families Mental Health Services
This is an adventure-based therapy program
connected to outpatient mental health
services. Youth will be given the opportunity
to participate in a variety of activity-based
groups, including kayaking, rock climbing,
and hiking delivered by Power to Be.
Comox Valley Speech and Language Clinic
This program will provide speech and
language services for children 0-6 years, with
a particular emphasis on Aboriginal children
and children in rural and remote
communities. Language kits will be
distributed to 25 communities across the
island, along with the training of 90 early
childcare professionals to deliver the
program.
HerWay Home
This is an innovative program that provides
wrap around supports for pregnant or early
parenting women who are impacted by
substance use, have experienced violence or
abuse, and who often face mental health
challenges.
Specialized equipment and program supplies
E.g. thermometers for vaccine refrigerators;
breast pumps and accessories; diagnostic
middle ear analyzer, etc.
