Abstract: During this Milestone Lecture, Bob will discuss his academic career, highlighting
key findings, experiences and events. Of particular interest will be reflecting upon the teaching,
research and service that faculty undertake and how each of those influence the others and collectively, including through collaborations, craft the direction of the Academy. Over a decade
ago, the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science began what are now called
Milestone Lectures. These recognize major academic milestones: promotion to Associate Professor, Professor and Distinguished Professor.
Biography: Professor Robert Powell is a Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering and
Materials Science and also a Professor of Food Science and Technology at the University of
California Davis. From 2002 until 2011 he was the Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. He has been Vice Chair and Chair of the Academic Senate of the
University of California System. Currently he serves as the Science Advisor to the Secretary of
the California Natural Resources Agency and the Chair of the Science and Technology Committee of the Board of Governors that oversees Los Alamos National Laboratory and Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratory.
